Totally Frustrated!!

A little background info: In May 2008, I weighed 316 pounds. Today I weigh 200. I did it with diet and exercise. I know I have achieved a lot but still have 35 pounds to go. I lost the weight over a period of 4 years and haven't lost of any significance since. I have tried to work with different calorie numbers, macros, changed up workouts, added weights, etc., all to no avail. I am at a loss and don't know what to do and feel like giving up because no matter how healthy I eat, how hard I work out, try to have the right mindset, I am not seeing any progress. I don't know what else to do. I think my BMR is about 1610 and have read that I shouldn't go below that number but have a really hard time ever netting that many calories. It's doesn't seem right to eat when you are not hungry just to reach a number but I could be wrong. Please help!

Yes, every bite

Do you take cheat days or days off?
No, I may have a cheat meal every once and a while but remain within daily calorie goal

How much weight have you lost so far and over what time period?
Explained above

Describe your activity (exercise and non exercise) and did you change that activity withing the last couple of months?
Some activity at work, weights 3 days per weeks (whole body), varied cardio 4 times per week (1 hour each session)
Added the consistent weight training about 1 month ago
I wear a heart rate monitor and input the calories burned as well

How long have you been stalled and if it is not a complete stall please be very specific as to how much you have lost over the stalled period.
Years

Are you breastfeeding?
No

Do you have thyroid issues/risks or PCOS?
Not that I know of. I had thyroid tested about a year and a half ago and it was normal.

Thank you!!

I know exactly how you feel, I have been on a 5 month stall, beginning to feel like this is where my body is going to stay, I'm so close to goal I can scream! goal is still about 42 lbs away, but seems like nothing, when compared to where I was at 274 lbs .Due to a back injury I was unable to exercise for 2 months, just started exercising 2 weeks ago , starting weights tomorrow , my doctor suggested I drop my calories to 1000 a day, I have low thyroid ,I said thanks but no thanks, I have lost 1 pound in 2 weeks! its a loss so I'm quite happy with even that, What seems to help keep my loss steady, slow still steady is a 30 minute walk after dinner , just started that again last week ,this I feel is why 1 pound came off (I have not walked in 5 months).
You could maybe try walking and see what happens, its a nice way to end the day, good luck with this journey, you have done an incredible job with how far you've come.

I think a reasonable next step would be to do the following things:

    1) Make sure you are using the recipe builder appropriately and tracking things as tight as you can for the next two weeks to rule out estimation error and casual nibbling/etc that happens to everyone.

    and

    2) Set your gross intake to

    1740 calories
    160 carbohydrate
    60 fat
    140 protein

Follow up with us in 2 weeks with an update if you would like monitoring or an adjustment. The above would be total intake, not net intake.
  • Well, still not much happening on the scale despite great effort. I started out at 200, this morning was 199. Did get down to 197.2 but not consistently. I have been extra careful with weighing, measuring, tracking, recipe building etc. A little off on the macros but tried to keep them as close as I could. I have been over on sodium most days which I am trying to work on to see if some water retention, but no real pattern that I can find. I don't understand why I have to work this hard just to maintain! Any more ideas? Thank you!

Did you weigh in daily and do you have those weigh-ins if so?
  • I do weigh daily, however, I didn't write everyday down. Here are the ones I did:

    1/6- 200.2
    1/8- 201.0
    1/15- 200.6
    1/19- 199.8
    1/22- 199.0
    1/31- 197.4
    2/1- 198.8
    2/2- 198.4
    2/3- 199.9

    2/2- 198.4
    2/3- 199.9

It would be reasonable to stay exactly as is for another week. When you look at the above data collectively it shows that you are now losing weight again despite the increase over the past few days. Lets give this more time before reacting.
  • Thanks, I'll continue and see what happens.
  • I gave it another two weeks. Here's the results:
    198.6 2/3
    200.2
    200.6
    199.2
    200.2
    199.4
    197.4
    198.6
    198.0 2/14
    199.4
    200.8
    200.6 2/17

To experiment, I reduced the number of calories on most days 100-250 calories, but obviously that didn't work either. I have strayed from macros some and ate a few more treats than normal being snowed in for days but still remained under calorie goal of 1740.

Hi! Quick question. You have a lot of homemade entries - do you use the recipe builder for these?
  • Yes, I do use the recipe builder. Tonight we had chicken piccata and I didn't have to use recipe builder because when I did a search I found a recipe that had the same calories, fat, carbs, etc. as the recipe I made.

    Hi!

On looking through your diary you have quite a few net carb entries. So we can get better data for your cals and 'gross' carbs, would you mind going back over the last 2 weeks and re-entering the items that are shown as net carbs to 'gross carbs'. Also, could you track fiber in your diary as this is helpful to the data we look at. Could you also double check all the entries for macros as there are a few that do not have them.

    Thanks
  • I think I have made all the changes you suggested. I didn't even realize I was using the net carb entries. Thanks for trying to figure out what is going on with me. I keep trucking along but it is so frustrating to not see results!
