Leg/arm day etc. or overall work

When I hear most people talking about their weekly lifting regiment they're people who are already in maintenance. For someone still working on fat loss who combines strength training with cardio do you think it I should be breaking my strength training down into arm/leg day etc. or doing overall body work each day.......or does it even really matter.

  • This of it as upper body and lower body days. And I would say that depends on how often you get to the gym. If you are going consistently, rotating upper body and lower body days is easy. If you're going with big gaps in between, I would do full body workouts.

I do full body workouts every time because I give it my all in my big lifts, and I need to break that up with alternating upper body and lower body in a single workout.

Oh, but to answer your question - it really doesn't matter. It's your preference only.

I think full body is always better for beginners. By splitting up the muscle groups, you only end up working them once a week whereas with a good full body programme you will train them 3-4 times per week. Body part splits are usually done as part of advanced programming, focussing on getting much stronger or building more muscle.

For general weight loss I'd always recommend full body training.
