Synthroid or t4 + t3 .VS. Armour alone or with cytomel

Hello everyone! I just recently started Armour thyroid. I been fatigued and could not get out of bed for 2 years due to Lyme and the Dr found out that my thyroid was a problem. That explains the fact that i have been low carbing for a while but still was not able to get at low 200's.

My main concern is which one is more effective for 1. energy , 2 weightless and 3 recovery? synthroid with cytomel or Armour either alone or with cytomel? Ratios that worked for people might be helpful. How many dosages per day?

What i have noticed is that cytomel alone, which i was initially prescribed wore me out and I could not recover so I would sleep all day. Armour which i just started today makes me feel better at 1 grain.

I want someone who has personal experience. I do not have a preference if it is synthetic or natural as long as I get back to having 1. more energy 2. not crashing and 3. losing weight?

Petru

I take 88mcg Synthroid, and it had no effect on my weight loss. I lost very slowly by eating at a deficit—20 lbs. in a year on ever-increasing doses.

My energy level is better (it was non-existent at diagnosis), but far from optimum. I'm often tired, and I sleep up to 10 hours a night.

    Petru-

I take 112 mg Tirosint (levothyroxine) and 30 mcg of cytomel a day. However, it's taken me about 3 years to get my dosages right, with constant monitoring. I've found that weight loss only comes with lowering my calories and exercising, and by eating no processed food and no dairy. I feel really good- lots of energy, but you have to understand thyroid medication isn't going to be a one-stop shop kind of fix for weight gain/low energy. What you put into your body is 90% of it. I've never taken Armour, so I can't give advice on that, but lots of people on this board do take it and like it a lot. Good luck!

I do not have personal experience with cytomel, but I was on Synthroid for ten years. At first it was ok, but it got worse and worse. I was more and more tired. More and more hair loss, weight gain, etc. I started getting awful joint pain, foggy headedness, etc, etc, but I was on the right dose. At times I was on enough Synthroid to get my TSH down to a 1 or less and still just felt awful. Armour is life changing for me. I have only been on it for 6 weeks and I have not even had my dose correction yet, but I can tell you....I will NEVER go back to synthroid. The fog has lifted, my weight is budging, and my joint pain is gone. Please stay on Armour for now and see how you feel when your lab work says you are right. If it doesn't work then feel free to give the synthetic combo a try.

I believe some people actually take Armour + cytomel for additional T3's.....she may need to add some cytomel to the mix to raise her energy....

I am on 120 mg of Armour with a 10 mcg cytomel supplement in the afternoon (I lose all energy around 2 p.m.) My T3 levels are "ok", or sometimes just a titch low, but I am having a Reverse T3 issue going on.
  • I'm on Armour so far a few days it was ok, but then sudden crashes. I think the t3 is too high. T4 seems to help me recover better and t3 gives me bursts of energy, but causes fatigue tiredness and instability. Maybe erfa might be better because it has a higher t4:t3 ratio. I also feel that on days when i exert myself i need more Armour just to stay stable. its a good change from t3 only but i still need to adjust it based on feel. T3 only made me extremely irritable and ruined my energy along with everything else. Its too strong even at low dosages. I thing there is a reason t4 is dominant and that's because its not as harsh on the system as t3. This is my assumption.

Others with experience let me know,

  • I've been on 30mg of Armour since October and it has been the best thing ever. My doctor insisted I try Armour and I haven't felt this good in year. But each person is different. What works for one person, won't always work for another. I wish you the best!

It took a whole lot of pressure from me, but my endocrinologist finally agreed to add Cytomel to the Synthroid. (My free T4 & TSH are good, but my T3 is low.)

Everybody's different, and it takes a whole lot of trial & error to find what works for you.

I'm thinking Erfa might be a better fit. IT has less t3 to 4 ratio . This allows for better adjustments to be made at lower dosages. Once the t3 gets too high symptoms start appearing and you cant change it. T4 too has its drawbacks as I had experienced today. The anger was REALL! The slightest thing made me want to get in a fist fight. That is very dangerous and its not good for my sanity. The cytomel is too powerful and needs to be used sparingly. When there is too much used it depletes you and you wake up tired and don't feel like doing anything that day. I'm curious if synthroid and t3 worked better than Armour for some people? Surprisingly, a few days ago I nailed it and had one of the best days ever. The last two days I have felt like crap. I'm going to back off on the Armour dosage. Getting the dosage right is like playing the Russian Roulette

I've never heard of Erfa, but interesting info about armour and cytomel. My TT was almost a month ago so I need to think about which direction I want to go. I am currenly on 125 mg of levothyrixine but would like to try a NDT. I feel good right now but my T3 is a little low so was going to ask about armour and cytomel. But I'll have to go through my regular doctor versus my endo who doesn't prescribe NDT s.

I've never heard of cytomel, but I was on synthroid for a year or so and my body basically laughed at me. Then I tried Armour and everything changed. Basically what my doctor said was that my body can't convert free T4 into T3 (I think that's what it was) so taking a ton of T4 did less than nothing for me. She also told me the single most important thing was taking it on an empty stomach.

ETA: I'm on 90 mg of Armour and I was on 120--had major heart palpitations, panic attacks, and could NOT sleep to save my life. Backed off and got a lot better. It's super important to stay in regular contact with your doctor (phone calls in my case, we're in separate states), and don't be afraid to make changes and test everyyyyything.

    Thanks for the help everyone,
I found out the problem. I was taking wellbutrin until i got the thyroid fixed because i felt like crap. It was the wellbutrin that was causing me to feel like this. I think im back to feeling well on Armour without cytomel. The addition of cytomel makes me tired the next day when I wake up if its too much added to Armour.

I take Nature-throid (natural dessicated thyroid like Armor), and I really like it. I see you're feeling better, but just wanted to suggest one thing for the weight gain -- have you been checked for insulin resistance?

I learned that I have insulin resistance and it was quite a surprise to me -- I was actually in the pre-diabetic stages. My doctor says that although they don't have definitive research on it, it's often found hand-in-hand with those who have thyroid issues that have gone untreated (or mistreated) for years -- which was my case. So, he put me on metformin to help my body metabolize glucose correctly. He told me that once the insulin sensitivity is reset (and the weight lost) and the thyroid is treated properly, oftentimes the insulin resistance does not reappear. It's not a guarantee, but it's a strong likelihood.

I've only been on it for a month, and I'm still dosing up, but I'm finally starting to see some movement on the scale. All the diet and exercise is finally starting to *actually* work. I'm finally see a result from my 700+ calorie daily deficit. I also low-ish carb to help that along (50-80 carbs per day). So, I'm hopeful.

I started out with just synthroid and then added cytomel. Now I am just on Armour. I like Armour best. I have never heard of a person having cytomel WITH Armour since Armour has more T3 in it than humans naturally produce to begin with (it comes from pigs). Cytomel is T3. My energy did level off with Armour, but weight loss has always been harder ever since I was diagnosed while pregnant with my first child. I think that is typical with hypothyroid patient unfortunately. It does come off but at a much slower rate and we have to be EXTRA diligent. For instance, successful dieting for me is a 1/2 lb. per week loss. Whereas before, I could lose 2 lbs. w/o too much effort.

    Thanks

I did check for diabetes i have perfect blood sugar. The Armour definetly works for all kinds of fatigue problems. But, it is also wearing me out. I think, like many people said, the t3 content is too high at 28%, whereas erfa is somewhere around 22%. Im uncertain if this will make all the difference, but it is worth a try. I am not so concerned about the weight, but the energy level in my day to day life.

I am either really light headed or find myself confused on this medication, which is not good. I hope the Erfa will work otherwise I am giving up on these medications.
