Provide your stats (height/weight/age/bodyfat% if you know it/etc) 5'2, 146, 30% (used the hand held thing at my Y)

What's your current gross intake of calories, on average? 1200-1400

What's your current average intake of protein, carbs, and fats, in grams? (GRAMS, not percent!) 40 protein, carbs 30, fats 30

Do you use a food scale and measure everything? no scale but I do use measuring cups for my servings.

Do you track all of your intake, daily? (Everything?) yes

Do you take cheat days or days off? only if I've had good work outs all week I will take a Sunday off for logging but not a cheat day. Maybe a meal.

How much weight have you lost so far and over what time period? I lost 70 the first 8 months I was on here. Then the Dr said I had hypothyroidism and put me on medicine for it and I gained 8 pounds in the first three days. I called her she said it would go away it was my body getting used to it and then within the first month I was up about 12. Now it's more like 16.It's been a year and a half now. I'm trying to get into a new Dr. the one I have doesn't seem to care.I'm having many issues other than the weight gain. Losing hair, no memory, tried 100% of the time, joints hurt, cold...freezing to the point my hands hurt they are so cold. I NEVER had any symptoms before I took this medicine--I went off it and my levels came back worse and they double the amount I needed to take. :(

Describe your activity (exercise and non exercise) and did you change that activity withing the last couple of months? I run 3 miles 2 days a week. I take Spin classes 3 times a week and I lift heavy 4 days a week. I also cross train (Arc trainer) or yoga classes. On lift days I run 1 mile to warm up too. I just did a triathlon. So I would say I'm pretty active. I also work 6 days a week and 2 of them are 13 hour days. I'm a teacher and at night I work in the daycare center at my YMCA. I also have 2 kids I'm running all over (does that count)?

How long have you been stalled and if it is not a complete stall please be very specific as to how much you have lost over the stalled period. I was at 131 the day I ran my 1/2 marathon in Sept'12. I have gained a total of 16 pounds since. 12 was in the first month on the meds. I have lowered my calories to under 1200 and I still gain. I have gone with no food at all for 3 days and gained weight?!?!?! I also have hypoglycemia now. I pass out and get dizzy and shaky if I don't watch my sugar and breads...so I am very aware of what I'm eating. I have seen the scale move from 147 to 141 over the past 6 months but every day it's something different.

Are you breastfeeding? no

Do you have thyroid issues/risks or PCOS? yes. thyroid

THANKS!!!!

We will certainly look at your information but the likelihood is that we are going to come back with "resolve this with your doctor and/or seek a second opinion from another doctor".

Will get back to you after Sara and I discuss. If anything sticks out to us on the food intake front we will let you know.

Here's what I've found over the past 10 years in dealing with low-thyroid to now, non-existent thyroid: That *kitten* will F you up big time. There have been times in my life, that no matter WHAT I did, I could not lose weight or build muscle. I will say that since I've upped my calories and started being very strict about my diet (I eat what I would call sort-of paleo- no dairy, no red meat, hardly any grains), I've seen massive improvement in my strength alone. I quit weighing myself, and go by how my clothes fit and the improvements I'm making at the gym. I think with any type of thyroid issue, diet is key. Your metabolism is slower if you have a lower-producing thyroid- and for some reason medicinal supplementation just doesn't cut it for me. You may also ask your doctor if she's testing your TSH, Free T3, and Free T4. ALL of these are important, but if your Free T3 levels are in the tank, you will have zero success. It's the most frustrating thing EVER, I can assure you, but if you find a GOOD endocrinologist you can work out the kinks. I highly suggest you read www.stopthethyroidmadness.com. A wealth of good information related to this. And don't let anyone tell you that having a low thyroid won't affect your weight if you're properly supplemented. I have to work twice as hard as people at my gym to get stronger- but the good news is you CAN have success.

    ^^THIS.

If you are still having all the symptoms of hypothyroidism AND are gaining weight despite exercise and tracking intake, then there is absolutely no way you are being correctly treated by your doctor. I gained weight on less than 500 calories a day and vigorous exercise.

I would even suggest skipping the endocrinologist, if you can find a doctor that will test all the things Ashley mentioned and treat you by your SYMPTOMS, and not your lab values. (I have seen 8 different endocrinologists in Phoenix, and they all refused to prescribe anything other than synthroid). I think Stop the Thyroid Madness has a doctor recommendation list, and so does Mary Shomon's site: thyroid.about.com.

The Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism board on MFP is full of helpful people who have been in this exact same place (unfortunately): http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/770-hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism

Lowered calories (but I was eating a boatload), and also the carbs. I don't eat low carb, per se, just much fewer carbs than I used to. Quite a few of us have blood sugar and insulin resistance issues, and getting those dialed back definitely helped me feel better.

Keep in mind though, that even with optimal treatment, your metabolism is always going to be a little slower than a "normal" person's. It's the most annoying thing ever, but weight loss can be accomplished!

First step is optimal treatment. If you can, get the Stop The Thyroid Madness book and a decent doctor.

Good luck (and send me a friend request if I can help in any other way). :-D

    Hi!

On looking at your diary you do not appear to be logging accurately and/or where you have only logged one or two meals. Also, not weighing food can lead to quite significant under-reporting - see here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/872212-you-re-probably-eating-more-than-you-think

As has been mentioned, if you are hypothyroid then your BMR will be slower than average (as well often as being more sensitive to carbs).

Before we can give intake advice, we need to get an accurate picture of your caloric intake. Would you be able to buy a digital scale and use it as much as possible?

I'll get one. I just got over strep and the flu so the last 2 weeks my diet is not like normal. The last 2 -3 days is more what I eat and workout. If that helps. I went a few days not eating at all because I couldn't. The flu got me bad. :(

question...for those of you that have lost weight did you lower calories or up them???

I upped. But that was under the guidance of my trainer, 100 calories per week, until I got to about 2000. However, I eat zero processed food, hardly any gluten, and no dairy......For me, a calorie wasn't just a calorie. My body treated 1400 calories of processed crap the same as it does 2000 calories of really good food. Good luck. Thyroid stuff is SO FRUSTRATING.

Just because it is processed does not mean it is crap or not good food.
