Meditation
The Eleventh Day of Lent delivers a two-fold punch of those who have faith in the gospel. The prophet Isaiah echoes the Psalmist, reminding us of the source of our salvation and inspiration. The prophet elaborates further by stating the eternal aspect of faith in God, outlasting the petty put-downs of those who would speak against faith in God, or even the earth’s existence which will disappear, but the truth of the Lord will last forever.
The second part of the day’s lesson is the moving story of faith by a Roman centurion’s encounter with Jesus concerning a servant in his household, who was sick. The officer was a man of some importance in the Roman army, with a clear leadership role. He compared Jesus’ authority with his own, for he said Jesus merely had to speak the words for his servant to be healed.
Jesus complimented him, saying that he had not found such faith in all of Israel. Trust in God. Simple, but hard to do, when everything is bleak. That is why this was so profound. Here was one of the invading forces—the enemy Romans—showing faith at a higher level than the chosen people, the Jews, had produced. The Roman centurion raised the bar of faith in action. We are given a level to strive for…and expect more of ourselves, knowing that such faith, according to the Jewish prophet, Isaiah, achieves an eternal reward that will outlast the sky and the earth.
Not a bad investment. Invest in faithfulness and reap an eternal reward.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Daily Bible Verses to Memorize for Meditating
The “Traveler’s Psalm” is worth memorizing in its whole, but at least verses 1 & 2.

Psalm 121
King James Version (KJV)
121 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Luke 7:1-10
King James Version (KJV)

7 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

Prayer of Encouragement

Dear God, We are grateful for the shining example of the Roman centurion, who demonstrated faith beyond anything Jesus had seen in Israel. Empower us to be like him and trust you when things are bleak. Thank you for your promises that tell us that faith is eternal, and won’t die like people or the earth and sky. We praise you. In Jesus name. Amen.

Conclusion
On the Eleventh Day of Lent, the bar was raised for measuring faithfulness, by the Roman centurion. Simply speak and it will come to pass, were his words of belief. Many of the times when things are not going well, I do trust that God could, but I am not sure that God would want what I want to happen. Not so, this Centurion. He never faltered, believing that of course Jesus would heal. God wants to do good things for us. If we get ourselves in the mindset of the centurion—so in sync with what God is about—we can live confidently, too. He ‘got it’ in a way that others completely missed. His trust was complete and without hesitation.
Epiphany hammered home the way Christians must strive to live and being faithful to those guidelines from Christ, we can set ourselves up to be in the zone for making the right choices and being faithful, like the centurion showed us. Yes, Do good. Be fair, loving, generous and humble. All these behaviors help us live a faithful life. Sometimes we even fake it until we make it---well, not so much faking it, but more like practicing it (even if we aren’t great at it yet) and we will be building on something that is eternal, that will last long beyond the life of this planet. A worthy investment of our time.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life.*
