Weight Loss Struggle Post Op

Hi all,
I recently had the Gastric Sleeve done on Dec 16th. I have lost a total of 30 pounds - 10 of which was from the Liver Reduction Diet in the 10 days before surgery- between then and my first follow up on Dec 27th. I am concerned though because even though I am following the stages as prescribed, I have not lost one additional pound since the 27th. I am getting about 50-60 g of protien per day, sometimes more and am getting in about an average of 700-800 calories a day. I am drinking all my waters and as I said above following the diet guidelines. I have been doing the resistance band exercises and should be clear to go back to the gym in about a week or so.

For some background, in the last five years I was gaining weight uncontrollable , even though my diet/exercise hadn't changed drastically - and has continued undiagnosed by every doctor and specialist. the end result was about a 130 lb weight gain. I have tried everything to lose that weight, from pills to personal trainers, weight watchers, low carb high protien diets, doing things like couch to 5k programs, gym regularly, I was even placed on an 800 calorie diet for a while. They looked at PCOS as a likely factor, and I had several of the symptoms, but not the ones that are most prominent with PCOS, they determined a gluten intolerance as well, but ultimately the weight wouldnt come off and this surgery was recommended.

With that being said, you can understand why I am deathly afraid that I have gone through all of this, had this surgery and am now having a complete panic attack that the scale hasnt moved in 2.5 weeks. Its like reliving the last 5 years all over. This is supposed to be the rapid weight loss phase. Is it normal to have not lost ANY weight in 2.5 weeks? Has this happened to anyone else out there? Is there something I am doing wrong? I know I could stand to eat more protien grams - and am working on that. Looking for any advice available at this point..

  • Don't panic. I had rny gastric by pass 7 months ago. I have lost 93 lbs, but I have had several periods where the weight loss was slow or stalled for 2-3 weeks at a time. Before surgery this is when I would get discouraged and give up thinking what I was doing wasn't working. After about 2 weeks I seem to drop 4-5 lbs in a few days. I now realize this is my body's pattern for weight loss. I no longer panic. I still have about 60 lbs to go to my goal and I eat about 1200 calories each day. Increasing protein and water seems to work for me too. Stay with it. You will see the results.
  • I think you are doing great. I have the sleeve sept 2013 i am only down 60 lbs. I just saw my surgeon last week and then i was only down 53 lbs and I had stayed there for a few weeks and mt surgeon said I wasn't getting enough calories. If you are not getting more than 800 calories your body goes into starvation mode and it stops your weight loss. I hope this helps and good luck with your weight loss it really does get easier and better with time. :D

    My wife had her sleeve in nov 2013. She has period where she stalls at a weight for 2-3 weeks and then loses 7-10 pounds in a week. We talked about it and bumped up her intake from about 70 calories a day to 1000. She hasn't had any real stalling issues since.

    Don't worry to much... As long as you are working on getting the 60 or more grams of protein a day and all your water your body just needs time to adjust.

    I had my sleeve on 1/21/14. My weight loss has slowed some in the past few weeks to about 2 pounds a week. It was much more before.

    Remember our bodies have been shocked and need time to adjust to all the changes.
  • I just had my sleeve on February 19th and I have hit my first stall. I have my gray days but I have to remember my body is kinds in shock but it is disappointing.
  • I'm five weeks post-op (3/10/14 surgery date) and I'm doing pretty good. I was cleared for full exercise after my one month follow-up and I exercise - 5 days a week, sometimes 6 days. Not sure why your doctor hasn't cleared for any exercise, but everyone is different.

    I haven't had many problems at all. A little heartburn, a few times I ate a little too much. I'm on soft foods still, but have been cleared to transition in other foods as tolerated. I have lost 27.5 pounds in 5 weeks. The first week I had a 14.1 pound loss. One month revisit I had lost 7.5 pounds in 3 weeks. In weeks I have lost an additional 5.9 pounds.

    I honestly think that even with the surgery and even eating so much less than we ate before, and eating much healthier than we did before that the exercise is the key. I water walk for an hour 3 times a week, 30 minutes of treadmill twice a week and fit in a stretch and strength somewhere in there too. I also have started just going for walks around the neighborhood now that the weather is nice. I'm also semi-vegetarian now.

    Everyone is different and there are a lot of people who get discouraged, but don't. We went through all that we went through to get to a goal -- and what we did was pretty drastic! Just remember the 2 weeks of liquid diet (ECK!) post-op!

    Once you are able to get some exercise in you'll boost your metabolism. Start slow and increase it as tolerated.

    Hi,

    I had my sleeve on 1/21/14 and have been doing really well. I had quite a bit of pain after surgery due to a complication so I was cleared for exercise at 1 month and today was my 2 month and I was cleared for resistance training. I am now 2 months out and cleared to return to all foods obviously in small quantities and have to introduce one at a time. I am eat about 1/2 a cup of food at a meal.

    I had lost 57 prior to surgery doing the pre-op requirement and so far #27 after surgery in 8 weeks. I have been losing about 2.5 a week consistently.

    Working out and eating right has made a HUGE difference in keeping the weight loss moving and coming along. My next goal is to hit 100# loss!!!!

  • Hi, I had bariatric surgery Feb 3 /14... a few weeks ago I had 2 weeks where I lost very little. It was very disappointing. I determined that I was probably consistently having too few calories (700-800) so I pushed myself to increase to 900 - 1000... it has worked the next week my weight dropped 3.5 lb. I am unable to go for walks at this time as I am waiting for hip replacement surgery. The moral of this story is don't get down on yourself... increase calories once in awhile and the scale should move again! Hang in everyone!
