Steaming

Do any of you steam your vegetables? Yesterday I bought this some broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots which came in a bag you could steam in the microwave. I have never done that before but I decided to give it a try. It was DELICIOUS, especially with a little bit of lemon pepper. I am going to try this more often by buying whole vegetables and cutting them myself. I have a saucepan with a steamer basket so I am covered on that end. Any tips? Any flavors or combinations I can try?

I love steamed veggies, I tend to like them done lightly because I like the crunch. The three you mentioned are the best but string beans and cabbage will work as well and I am sure there are others.0

I don't steam much - prefer roasting veg, personally. When I do steam, I pay attention to size and cooking time; for instance, carrots take longer than zucchini - so carrot pieces need to be smaller and zuke for both to be the same amount of done.0

Steaming is a good way to eat many kinds of veggies. Consider adding grass fed butter and some fresh spices to make the nutrition really pop.0

Lightly steamed green beans or asparagus are great dipped in hollandaise sauce0

I steam things but NEVER in plastic. There are no plastics that are safe to cook food in. I steam in a pot most often but on rare occasion I will steam in a glass or ceramic container in the microwave. And I always add healthy fats and sea salt.0

I'm in the "no plastic is safe to cook food in" camp, but I'm also in camp "I work full time and am a single mommy and LOVE popping a bag of frozen veggies into the microwave for a quick Paleo supplement to our dinner."
I'd rather not, but because I'm doing the job of two parents and working full time, it's a corner I'm willing to cut.
Beats the poo out of the drive-thru.0 -
I tend to steam only one kind of veggie at a time b/c of cooking time differences and I like them crisp steamed. I usually add compound butters to my steamed veggies- and with spring around the corner there should be an abundance of fresh herbs to combine with ghee or kerrygold (that stuff is good on its own!) and just slice off a chunk to toss with the steaming hot veggies!0

I like to “steam” my veggies in butter and oil with cajun spices, yum!0

I'm a single mommy who is employed full time too and I don't find it hard to open a bag and put stuff in a corning ware dish with a few drops of water. I'm not trying to cut anyone down with the things I say; there was a time I didn't have a clue about all the toxic things in our food and consumer goods. It's information; take it or leave it.0 -
For some reason when I try that they get gummy and dry or mushy.
The only way I have figured out how to successfully steam the veggies is using my stainless colander and pasta dish.0 -
I have this beast - http://www.amazon.com/Secura-Stainless-Electric-technology-S-324/dp/B004MKG8H8/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1396482946&sr=8-29&keywords=vegetable+steamer
We love steaming veggies (except asparagus, that gets grilled or roasted, because grilled asparagus = heaven). I'm personally a fan of just broccoli swimming in butter and a little salt, but we do all sorts of veggies. It's nice because you don't have to worry about them burning or the water running out or anything like that. You put the veggies in, set the timer, and let it do its thing.0
