Socks??

So after getting 4 blisters on my toes after an 8 mile training run in the rain, I am thinking it might be time to invest in some new socks. I wasn't wearing cotton, but they were thicker Adias/Nike/Reebok no-shows. I've heard good things about merino wool. Is there a particular brand that folks swear by? I'd love to have something that really works by my first half on April 27th!

TIA!!

Not sure what you should use for your half...but Injinji toe socks work great for minimizing blisters in rainy, wet conditions. My favorite socks outside of those would be Balega hidden comfort.

My favorite socks are the Balega Hidden Comfort and the Balega Hidden Contour. Wright Socks are a close second/third. I've worn the Hidden Contour on a pretty sweaty 16 mile run and had no feet problems. I've worn the hidden comfort up to 15 and only got sore spots (not actual blisters) when my feet got soaked (rain and such). The Wright socks have been problem free up to 10 miles. Next would be Thorlo Experia. I've gone up to 14 in those with no problems. A distant next would be Feetures. They're a nice sock but don't approach the feel of the Balegas, Wrights, or Thorlos.

I've got several pairs of Asics that were in a multi pack for pretty cheap. They were my everyday running socks for a while and were great for 3 to 8 mile runs but they're getting pretty worn and I don't wear them much any more. I had two pair of Wigwam Ironman and they were awesome for the first few times I wore them but then they got...... sh1tty. I have a couple of pair of Injinji toe socks and they're ok but not anything like the comfort of the above listed socks.

I haven't run in any merino wool socks but I know Balega makes some and they are on my list to try. I have merino wool hiking socks and they're really nice. Also, I wear REI merino wool liner socks for dress socks almost every day and they're great.

I second sjhonny for Balega Hidden Comfort. Hands down the best, IMO. Wore them all through marathon training and in the marathon- no blisters yet. Wore them in muddy trail runs, in the rain, in the cold- no blisters. Never had a problem with Balega, so never tried any other sock either... so take it for what it's worth :)

I'm a Feetures fan in all weather, warm or cold, dry or wet. Haven't ever had a problem so I stick with what I know works for me. Can't beat their lifetime guarantee either (had a hole appear in the ankle seam of one pair, called, emailed them a picture, and had a new pair delivered within 3 days - that's service!).

I love Smartwool PhD socks for cooler/wet weather & the aforementioned Wigwam for when it's hot out. I can't stand any of the toe socks (Injiji and other brands), but I have unusually long toes so they just hurt my feet. Wright socks are OK. Never tried Balegas.

So basically it's trial and error. Everyone has different feet and preferences.

Another vote for Balega. I've tried a couple different brands, and Balegas are just amazing.

I like the Smartwool PhD Run Ultra Light socks. They are pricey but worth it imo. Never had any trouble with my feet.

It's funny, when friends ask me which shoes are more comfortable, I usually tell them it's personal preference, but it's just as, if not more important to have *good* socks. The 5 year old Hanes they have hidden in the back of the drawer probably won't cut it.

I have three different brands that I wear and like - Lorpen, Balega and Thorlo. I prefer a sock with good foot padding, but light weight top half with decent wicking. For my half today I work Thorlo Experia's and that's what I tend to wear for my long runs. For short runs or for just wearing with sneakers when I'm out with the wife and kids I tend to lean toward my Lorpens. The Balega are all-purpose socks and can go either direction. There's no rhyme or reason to why I wear what I do when I do other than my runners' superstition kind of way.

I've bought the less expensive brands (RoadRunner Sports store brand, for example, or cheaper Filas from Kohl's) and usually end up hating them. The material tends to not be as high of quality and they just aren't that comfortable.

Blisters may not be a sock issue...but I love balega hidden comfort, nike hyper lite and asics tiger lyte running socks!
