Protein powders

So I'm interested in buying protein powder, and my mother is going to probably freak (Ah, yes, I can see it now, "Who are you... She-Hulk!?").

Anyway, disregarding that, do any of you drink protein shakes and if so, what are your suggestions for a protein powder noob? I'm thinking I might go with whey at first. I tried some of a friend's and it sat pretty well in my stomach.

I use six star whey protein. It isn't all that high end, but it helps me hit my macros a lot better than having cream and sugar in my morning coffee(s). I don't really like them on their own so I try mixing it in things like my coffee (one scoop gets me 2 mugs of coffee, one scoop in one mug is just too much for me) or with oatmeal and yogurt.

I'm a fan of Trutein powders. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is my favorite. I also like the Cinnabun. I use the vanilla flavor for recipes, but really don't care for it in a shake. The nice thing about the Trutein is that they do a three protein split of whey, egg white, and casein. So you get the time release of the three different kinds. Casein is slow to break down so it can help keep you full longer.

I had tried some other ones in the past and will only use Trutein at this point because it is the best tasting I've had. If you are in the US this is the company I recently bought from and they had a good price: http://www.bestpricenutrition.com/body-nutrition.html

Thanks, guys! I'll look into both.
I keep hearing that Chocolate Peanut Butter is a great flavor, so maybe I'll get a 2lb container and taste it myself

I do on occasion. I prefer Syntrax (mostly because you can get it on Amazon lol). The Nectar line has some awesome flavors, it dissolves well and has no carbs.

I've used the Body Fortress stuff from Walmart - about 15$ for a tub.
Taste wasn't awful. Even mixed with water.

I got a small tub from Trader Joe's - SOOOO awful.

I'm currently using Optimum Nutrition - Extreme Milk Chocolate and the French Vanilla Creme.
I'm debating on trying the mocha one (hint - if anyone has reviews)

MusclePharm Combat Powder Cookies and Cream is really good mixed into Greek yogurt or in milk.

I also like IsopurePlus Zero Carb fruit punch 8 oz. bottles - 15 grams of whey protein isolate for 60 calories, can't beat that calorie bargain! And also Quest bars. Around 200 calories for 20 grams of protein, you get to actually eat something, and they taste great and have a really decent amount of fiber.

Please, for the love of mashed potatoes, avoid MuscleMilk Pro Chocolate Mint, even if you're like me and everything tastes good to you. Yes, 40 grams of protein sounds great, but it tastes like cocoa, mint extract, sucralose, shame and despair.

I currently have Body Fortress whey isolate in Vanilla and regular whey in Cookies and Cream. Too much lactose causes an upset stomach for me, I only use the CnC powder in non-dairy milks (my fav is coconut). The whey isolate I mix with water or cow's milk if I want to use my calories that way. Once these are gone, I'll probably move on to Trutein or something else, but I don't hate what I have and it fit my budget.

Every experience I've had with muscle milk was pretty atrocious. The strawberry flavor was the worse though. Anyone says cough syrup? Ugh.

As I've said on your porifle yesterday, Biox is a pretty surefire call. They also have a PB & chocolate flavor which I think is the next one on my list to try from them :)

Not a huge fan of optimum whey, but then again I only tried the banilla natural one and chocolate natural casein.

I've also tried Dymatize's 6 protein belnd (can't remember the name), which I would stay away from. Way too sweet and clumps up a lot.

Allmax hexapro vanilla is actually pretty decent though. Their cookies and cream was a big hit in my surrounding, but it's overly sweet as well so it's kind of a hit or miss. lol

    Hope that helps!

I absolutely adore Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard in Mocha Cappuccino. I mix it with Dannon Oikos nonfat plain Greek yogurt and it dissolves very well and is completely smooth after just a couple minutes in the refrigerator. I add in a little instant espresso powder that also dissolves well and adds a little kick. This is almost like a dessert and provides a lot of protein.

One serving of the yogurt and the Mocha Cappuccino gives 46 grams of protein.

I learned about it on Nia Shanks website so I can't claim it but she calls it her *high protein cheesecake bowl.*

I need to try one of the chocolate peanut butter cup protein powders. I bet it would be good in the yogurt, too.

I use Jay Robb whey. 140 calories, 25 gms of protein, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners. I used to see it recommended on the forums a lot, which is why I tried it, but I don't see it mentioned much any more. It mixes well and tastes good. My favorite shake is chocolate w/almond milk, half a banana and a tablespoon of chocolate peanut butter.

Have you tried mixing it with water, milk, milk&coffee?
That's what I'm curious about because I wanna try that flavor...

I've been using Optimum Nutrition Vanilla and Chocolate and I'm guessing the taste hasn't bothered me enough to go seek out other flavors! I might look into this Mocha Cappucino though. There's just no such thing as "enough coffee" in a day.

Eventually you will find out that everyone has a different opinion on which one is the best, also your taste will play a big part on this. I've gone through 4 different brands and here's what I found out about my taste on protein powders:

    - Non whey protein doesn't mix very well with water/milk and the texture is a big turn off for me.
    - I don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, not even natural sweeteners like stevia. I actually prefer it with no flavor at all.
    - I prefer organic / grass fed products ( when I'm willing to spend money on it)
    - I don't like when they create a lot of foam.

So that's my take on them and each person will have a different one. Some supplement stores sell individual packets of different brands, maybe that's a good start for you to see what you like. The one I use right now is Now Foods Organic Whey and I really like it.

I have not but for you I will try it in 2% milk tomorrow instead of yogurt unless you'd like me to try it in water. Whatever you want...How's that? I would do it today but I found some Trutein samples I ordered a while back and already mixed up chocolate peanut butter cup in my yogurt for after my workout.

I have tried Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard in French Vanilla and Cookies and Cream and have liked it so far
It mixes well and does not have the after taste of artificial sweeteners like some others I have tried.

I know some people already mentioned Trutein. I've been wanting to try it, so I just ordered some. Bodybuilding.com has a 10% off coupon code for it right now. It's LIFTHEAVY10. (I like bb.com because I can use PayPal instead of entering my credit card.)

Looking forward to the CinnaBun flavor. Yum :drinker:

I was just shopping around for this to give it a try. The powder I've been using is just whey protein so I wanted to see if the 3 different protein types in Trutein make any difference. Thank you for posting that code!!!

OOh, I hadn't thought about artificial sweeteners; I'm not a big fan of aspartame or stevia flavor. I did see a good review of the NOW unflavored stuff, so I'll probably try that down the line

    A. Men.

I'm going to try and get my hands on smaller amounts of the Biox and ON first, because I believe my local nutrition store stocks them.

Oh, and I like that the Trutein is balanced out with egg whites. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and just order some with that handy-dandy code. Plus, how can I say no to Peanut Butter Cup

I've gone through a 5lbs tub of Now unflavored isolate. It uhm... Wasn,t bad? On its own it kinda tasted sour cardboard-y. It was really hard to make it taste somewhat decent with fruits and other flavors. Bananas worked okay. And since it was isolate, it was awful for cooking (everything turned out REALLY dry and chewy and, again, cardboard). But! I found it was great to balance out dymatize's elite whatever's uber sweetness lol.

Oh my…that sounds delicious. I love caramel. Please let us know what you think after you try it. I like thicker textures which is why I use yogurt instead of a liquid and the pudding sounds right up my alley.

I had a sample of the chocolate pudding last time I ordered from them and I couldn't tell that it wasn't Jello pudding except for the slight protein powder after taste, but that didn't last long. I may make frozen protein pudding pops with it as well.
