How do I stop?

Sugar is my biggest problem. I know I'm addicted to it. How do I stop? How do other people with addictions do it? I know cold turkey won't work but once I start I can't stop. What works for others? I really need help!

Hey Sam, I have the same issue. One of the things I've noticed is that once I eat something sugary, I can't stop. However, before I've eaten anything sugary, I have more control. I'm an emotional eater, so my day can become sidelined easily.

On the days that work for me, I'm really careful first thing in the morning to eat breakfast without added sugar. For instance, I might cook old fashioned oatmeal then add a raw banana for sweetness and I sprinkle cinnamon for flavor (again, no sugar, just cinnamon). I don't add any other sweeteners. But if it's going to be a long time before lunch or snack break, I'll add toasted nuts to the oatmeal.

Experiment with different scenarios, and see what works for you. Good luck! I'm rooting for you!

Only you know yourself and your body, and what you can and can't do, but I'm wondering why you've decided cold turkey won't work? For me, it's the only thing that CAN work. Like Sztheday, once I start with something sugary, I'll be eating crap all day, and possibly all week. Going cold turkey was hard, but not as hard as living day after day feeling completely out of control and hopeless. I do use alternative sweeteners, and I also focus on extra protein which helps with managing hunger and cravings. There are amino acid supplements that some find helpful as well.
Abstinence from sugar isn't for everyone, and I totally get that. But it's not impossible, and many of us find it's far easier than trying to manage sugar "in moderation".
What ever approach you settle on, I'm rooting for you too!
  • I'm the same as you and the others who commented. It's like being an alcohokic who can't even take one sip of alcohol. I do the same and just don't eat it except in my coffee. I know if I have even one bite I am done for. What I do is have a cup if coffee in morning and afternoon along with healthy, high protein meals. The coffee helps me with some of my cravings. I also eat a large mug of homemade vegetable soup with a large glass of milk in the afternoon. I feel sooo full it makes it easier to keep from a binge/taking the first bite of sugar.

Good luck and God bless. I'm rooting for you too!!
