Primal/Paleo Diet AND Exercise Heart Rates :-)

Hi friends :flowerforyou:

I've been on MFP for a year and a half now, but only been eating primal for 11 months. I've lost all the weight I need to happily:blushing: !

One huge difference I've noticed is how fast my heart rate will climb when doing any type of aerobic exercise, including Marks Daily Apple recommended low and slow movement for several hours per week. I have a very low resting heart rate (45) to start with which is nice, and I noticed while eating the SAD (150+ carbs a day I think for me), it would take quite a bit to get the heart beating even in the lower "fat burning" 55%-75%. but I would really push it and I'd get there.

Now, I eat 50-75 carbs a day and my heart rate just jumps up easily and I don't have to push hard to get a good workout.

I'd like to know if this is common amongst us Paleo/Primal people and I'd like to hear your thoughts and experience if you'd like to share.

Thank you!

  • I am interested in this too. I just switched to Primal 3 weeks ago, but to get my heart rate up I have to nearly run.

    Anyone else have this experience?

Wow- Deanna! Yours was my experience until I went primal! Now, it just climbs fast and I have to tone things down so it doesn't get to high!

Hmmmmm, wonder what is going on here?

I do notice on a day that I have higher carbs, it is harder to get a heart rate to increase....

    Thanks for responding!

Bump. I am wondering the same thing. I have noticed a similar trend as flowers4julia. Does anyone have further information on this?

I noticed this as well, with out exercise, just moving around the house, Dishes...ect,

I am actually going to go do some yard work today with the HRM on so I can see what is happening but I go from resting 70- 140 with a short walk and while Im not fit, I found it odd that i was that out of shape all the sudden.

When eating grains/whatever I would go from 70-90 with the same activity.

Looking forward to the answers/ because its on my list of things to research out.

A quick search turned up a few different things:

    Too much Omega-6/too little Omega-3
Imbalanced electrolytes (not just sodium, but also potassium and/or magnesium)
    Dehydration
    After effects of an illness
Exposure to hidden toxins, such as gluten (if you're sensitive)

The dehydration and electrolyte imbalance are probably the most likely, especially if your carbs are really low. Keto-style diets are diuretic and tends to disrupt electrolyte balance, so make sure you're getting enough.

Well my yard work went just fine, my heart rate didn't get crazy until carried 2 5 gal pales full of rocks 100 yards or so, which for me is the same as lifting till fail, as I barley made it. which raised my HR to 189 Raking fast and furiously raised my HR to (100-130's), carrying the wet leaves to the burn pit in 45 gal cans raised my HR to (120-140), when I rested it returned to 70's.

So the omega balance or the electrolytes (I took some Milk of Mag) is likely it for me as hydration is never an issue I love water, haven't been ill, and am watching for gluten like a hawk as I think it may have been causing me joint pain.

Today's activity was completely different then some of the walks where I noticed my HR was elevated, so that makes a logical sense to me. Thanks

I do not have a HRM but this is interesting and I may get one to see how this looks on me because I have been upping my exercise of late.

The hydration / electrolytes may make sense for me, as I also just realized the other variable on the day in question (low heart rate) was going for a jog after work vs my usual before work (higher heart rate), so maybe just not well hydrated after 8 hours sleep? I'm paleo-inspired but am not very disciplined yet and the day of the low heart rate jog had eaten bread, so was wondering if that was the difference. I'll make an effort to go for my jog after work one day after being paleo compliant for a few days and see if I still see the low heart rate. lots of variables, but interesting stuff to watch as i move more towards regular paleo eating.
