What the what? BMR, TDEE

Hi all! I am 5"11, have a sedentary job. I calculated my BMR and TDEE , BMR 1642 and TDEE 1961. Sooooo ..... HUH? BMR 1642*7= 11,494 calories per week, To eat at a deficit of 3500 cals (to lose 1lb per week) 11,494 - 3500 / 7 days = 1142 per day... and to lose 2 lbs per week its like 600 cals per day,WTH? Dangerous, but eating 1350 cals per days has been piling the weight one. Have GAINED 11lbs since I have been back on MFP. (and I added exercising back into my routine after 3 months hiatus due to heart issue). ?!?!?! anyone have an answer? How can I eat 642 cals per day?

    You are subtracting from the wrong thing. Your BMR is what you need to keep your body moving TDEE= Total Daily Energy Expenditure. SO...
    1961(TDEE)*7(Days of week)=
    13727 - 3500 (1 pound)=
    10227 / 7 (days of week)=


    1461 = The amount of calories needed to loose 1 pound per week. :smile:

    Also. You may be eating more than you think. 11 pounds is a lot. track EVERY calorie... no guessing. By a food scale and pay attention to how many "1 bite"-s you take during the day, they add up..

    1642 is BMR, which is what is necessary for basic body functioning (such as organs, etc) without movement, etc.
    1961 is TDEE, which is what supports your basic functioning plus your selected activity level (you said sedentary)

    So you would subtract 500 (3500/7days) from the 1961 (not the 1642), but you would not eat less than your BMR (1642) regardless, because you need enough nutrition to support your organs (like your heart!) and not cause lasting damage to your body. Most of the time the "lose 1lb per week" amount comes out lower than BMR for sedentary people, so you have to eat at least your BMR or add activity/exercise to bump up your TDEE.

    If you are gaining weight, I think you should look into a food scale and weigh EVERYthing and also make sure that the database entries that you select are not complete fiction (make sure they have all macros logged and spot check against other entries for accuracy). Otherwise, perhaps some medication could be causing you to retain water? Also, have your thyroid checked?
