Racing Weight (Matt Fitzgerald)

Hi all!

I have heard a lot of people recommend reading "Racing Weight" by Matt Fitzgerald. I was looking into ordering it off Amazon and just wanted to make sure I order the right one! I assume people are referring to "Racing Weight: How to Get Lean for Peak Performance"? Just checking, since he also has another book, "Racing Weight Quick Start Guide". Thanks so much!!

I assume it is the Peak Performance one you mention first. He also has another new book The New Rules of Marathon Nutrition (or something like that) that I am reading now. In Racing Weight he talks about DQS (Diet Quality Score). If you get enamored and are as anal as me I setup a spreadsheet for DQS scoring :)

Yes Peak Performance is the one. I love DQS! It has literally changed my life!!! Before Racing Weight, I felt healthy and was doing well with endurance running, but then I realized my day scored MAYBE a 10 MAYBE (being generous). Now we consistently score 18+, with at least a few days scoreing above 22 in a week. Our whole family is seeing the benefits. I couldn't believe all four of my kids ate salmon with whole wheat pasta with spinach and tomatoes yesterday, but it seems they are really getting into this higher quality diet :) My running is feeling better, too. I feel faster and am leaner. I highly recommend the book.

Now my only problem is that low quality foods make me kinda depressed when they are the only thing around to eat.

any chance that spreadsheet is shareable? It sounds like a great idea but I am spreadsheet creation impaired.

I'll see if I can post it on Google drive or something as a shared doc. If you want to PM me an email address I can certainly just email it

I've never gotten all the way through the book, but definitely recommend it from what I've read! I also got his Racing Weight Cookbook and really like it.

I have been following his point system but until I maintained awareness of total calories in, I never made the progress I needed to actually lose weight. From a health standpoint, I think Fitzgerald is right on.

I was able to load the spreadsheet to Google Drive DQS.xls You should be able to access at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx9dyq3wemkXdjMxQ2tYY242OW8/edit?usp=sharing

Now, i think it is intuitive but then I put it together for my use not for somebody else to understand. :) The blocks on the left just show the scoring. In the table on the right input servings and your score should calculate. When you delete to start a new day do not delete the totals in the bottom row as the formulas are there

if anybody does find this useful I can make it more user friendly (i.e. a button to clear entries from a previous day)

Why would you want to be anal? ;)

I ordered this book last week based on recommendations from people in this group, I'm hoping it will arrive tomorrow. I'm looking forward to trying things out but I'm worried what my husband is going to think about me changing what I cook for us, it's probably going to be a drastic change.

Wow! thank you so much!! I always thought that Fitzgerald would make a lot of money if he designed an app or something like this around his Racing Weight DQS. It makes perfect sense to me and thank you so much for sharing it :)
