Paleo flours and baked goods

So I've been on the Paleo train for about 3 weeks now. I hardly log on MFP but I plan to start soon to have a steady diary going. So far my success has been impressive. I have lost about 5lbs with little exercise and the occasional "cheat" meal ( Mother's Day , Birthday etc) I have a big sweet tooth and the hardest thing for me to cut out has been sugary breads. I have since found several "Paleo" recipes for breads and other baked goods using flours like almond, tapioca, coconut and using bananas as sweeteners. My question is : As a paleo newbie are these recipes good for me since I am not indulging in processed crap anymore OR..... are they a crutch and should I limit these or eliminate altogether?

PS: My most recent recipe was for banana bread muffins using coconut flour , almond flour , eggs and bananas. They were super good and satisfied my sweet tooth craving. :) Also my 2 year old loved them and I feel better giving him that than the usual cookie.

I would say that if you have a sweet tooth and you have weight to lose, stay away from the paleo treats..I am a sugar addict and paleo or not,it will send me on a slippery slope of bad choices.
I think it's a great idea to make these for your child.
If you find you have sugar cravings, lower your carbs and up your fat.
The only way I can control mine are by eating in a ketogenic style of paleo/primal.
    Good luck on this journey

I second this. Paleo substitutes of baked goods are a complete fail for me. Sugar is sugar. However, they do make terrific alternatives for occasional treats such as birthday cakes, granola bars, etc. Great for children too but just like us they should be eating a majority of just meat/fat, vegetables and fruits with sweets as a "sometimes" food.

I don't really use a lot of paleo treats anymore other than tapioca for wraps becuase I need the starch. When I first started I would make baked goods for the kids once or twice a week. We had four children at the time, so they never lasted long enough to be a problem. On occasion I make muffins or cookies now, but mostly I am just too lazy to bother.

Even with a considerable amount of weight to lose I ate more carbohydrate than the average "paleo" in this group seems to eat. I just can't be very low carb for long periods of time. I feel fine, but then my thyroid hates me. So, I tend to eat about 125 grams or so, and even in the first few months while I was losing about 50 pounds, I never was ketogenic nor did I keep carbs low, generally between 75 and 175 grams a day depending on my activity level.

Your carb consumption is "low" compared to SAD. MFP defaults put me at 250 grams of carbs per day! There are people like you who need more carbs but for many people with metabolic disorders (inc excess body fat, craving, bingeing), a lower carb eating plan is usually the best starting point. Even people who do best with higher carbs (starchy veggies) still should be watching sugar intake.

Of course it is low compared to SAD, but it isn't low. It would be considered a moderate intake of carb. I was insulin ressitant and almost all of the weight I needed/need to lose is from my abdomen. Just because many people do well on a ketogenic diet, doesn't mean that all people with metabolic issues need to do it that way. Just giving another perspective.

So glad to hear this! I've been eating more carbs than many on the boards, and it is working great for me. I've tried low carb and I just feel miserable. I think individual people have individual needs - I would feel horrible on low carb. Just wanted to say thanks for this perspective!

The 'paleo' flours don't bother me because of the carbs in the treats or the calories. I don't like the extremely high omega 6 ratios of almond flour and coconut flour makes me super bloated. I have found about once every two weeks to a months is good for me; I'd rather eat some dark chocolate. But for birthdays and holidays the coconut flour is my go to. I do remember eating paleo breads daily when I first switched to grain free; it helped with cravings. This stuff all gets easier with time. I've always been a sweets junky and last weekend didn't finish a piece of birthday cake, I was full, crazy huh?!?!

I don't think there is anything wrong with them if you eat them in moderation, like most things. Coconut sugar is very low GI and is excellent for baking and organic pure stevia is also a good sugar substitute. Just watch all the omega-6 fats that comes from almond flour. Perhaps you may want to experiment with coconut flour?

The paleo diet isn't necessarily a weight loss diet, although this can be a side effect when you stop eating processed foods. It's about optimal nutrition and absorption of nutrients. :)

Thank you all so much for the different view points! I am actually only 5 lbs away from my weight goal of 135. I haven't lost any more weight since the initial 5 lbs . I think its because I am so close to my goal weight. I am reving up the work outs but if it comes off super slow that ok too! I think that moderation is the key word here and will keep that in mind from now on :)

Perhaps your body would like to stay where it is? I'm 5'6 and my healthy weight is about 150. I'm 166 right now and weight loss is very, very slow but I look and feel great so no matter. Let your body settle where it is most comfortable and if it is resisting losing more, you may already be there. Focus on health as your goal, rather than a number on a device. imo

Thank you , It's really hard for me not to focus on the number. I think it's because I was 132-135 before I got pregnant with my 2 year old and I've been yo yo dieting since. I managed to lose 60lbs since his birth in March of 2012. So for me to see 132 would make me soo happy! I have hung on to my "skinny" clothes in hopes of wearing them and looking good in them but I still can't fit into most of them. I had been struggling with the last 10 until I tried paleo. The first month I dropped 6lbs right away. Now i'm on day 3 of the whole 30 and it seems to be going well. I think not weighing myself like the whole30 instructs is going to be the hardest part for me.
