Body Pump and Shred

I have been going to one Shred and two Body Pump classes. Is this a recommended way to gain muscle. I have been getting feedback that these classes are more cardio that strength training and I want to find out if I am getting any benefit out of them.
I started with them because I don't like working out alone, so the class environment is helpful to me, I am 67, 5'4" 128lb, 29% body fat, 80lb lean body mass. I would like to be in the fit to active range.

I don't know about Shred, but judging by the name I imagine it's all cardio. I do Body Pump and it's more endurance training than muscle building because of the lower weight + high reps + no rest between sets. I still like it though but from what I've learned here, I know I won't be building muscle soon doing Body Pump only.
To continue dropping fat but keep your lean body mass you need to start resistance training while eating on a deficit. How much have you read about macros, strength training and TDEE? There are a lot of good articles in this forum about all these key topics but I can direct you to the best ones depending on how much you already know.
I recommend you read New Rules of Lifting for Women. It's very informational and comes with an exercise plan for you to follow.
Classes are fun but you if you want to see changes you need to get in to the weight room. I do resistance training 3 times a week and body pump once a week, on my off day.0 -
Gixbr is spot on. I too enjoy Body Pump, and it will may you some newbie gains if you push yourself to raise every week, but it's really muscle endurance rather than strength.
New Rules of Lifting is tough if you prefer a class structure, but if I made it through 6 months of it working out at home alone, I know you can too. it's all about your motivation and what drives you to hit your goals.0
