Those of you with GD OR THAT ARE ON LOW CARB "diet", how many grams of carbs do you eat daily and is your OB concerned about ketones? Someone made a comment to me about me not eating enough carbohydrates and ketones?!

The diet I was placed on (by a dietician and maternal fetal medicine specialist) when I had GD was:

    breakfast - 30 g carbs
    morning snack - 15 g
    lunch - 45 g
    afternoon snack - 30 g
    dinner - 45 g
    bedtime snack - 30-45 g

These #s were sort of the upper limit but I was told to make sure I had at least 175 g per day. (grand total of the above #s is 210 so it is not a whole lot of wiggle room between minimum and maximum).

She did say something at the GD class about ketones, specifically that they used to test urine (I think, or maybe blood) for them but they don't anymore - I'm talking about the ongoing testing, day to day by the patient, like how we tested our blood sugar four times a day. She did tell us that if we got the 175 g in, it would help to avoid that. 175 g is a pretty decent amount (I feel like I don't always eat that everyday now) but I found through my testing that it was more about the types of food I ate than the number. In my case, rice, flour tortillas, and sweets spiked it the most while I was fine with corn tortillas, pasta (even white pasta) and cereal.

That's interesting! Sometimes I wonder how those that do not monitor their caloric intake, know for sure if they are eating right amounts because, honestly, I would think I eat more carbs than I do only because I know even things like greek yogurt and cottage cheese (which I eat daily), have carbohydrates in them. But since monitoring I have found that I "only" eat 75-100g per day!!!

Wow, I feel like my diet is super strict in comparison, I'm surprised (and envious) of the variation-

breakfast - 15 g, no dairy or fruit
morning snack - 15 g, no dairy or fruit
lunch - 30g, up to 45g but only if having milk
    afternoon snack - 15 g
dinner - 30 g, up to 45g but only if having milk
    bedtime snack - 30-45 g

They never mentioned anything about ketones though

fishfilet---my GD diet was very similar to yours. Same numbers, and no dairy or fruit in the AM but I didn't have the lunch/dinner milk clause, mine was up to 45 regardless. My favorite part of pregnancy became my required bedtime snack of milk & half a chocolate bar. Never before had I eaten chocolate as much....and in the end, I only gained 20-25 lbs!! It's a good plan regardless of pregnancy status, and I'm trying to get back on it now!

I vary my daily amont of carbohydrates based on my post prandial blood sugars. What I have found best to make sure I wasn't not eating enough is every morning I check my urine for ketones (MD agreed) with ketone sticks I bought at CVS. If you are GDM, your dr will probably go ahead and order them to have a reduced copay.
I am not sure if you are GD or not, but if you are unsure if you are getting enough carbohydrate for the baby and yourself, have your OB or endocrinologist refer you to a dietitian and they can work with you to get those answers that are right for you.

Thanks! I am not GD but thought those who are , would have more insight on carb intake. I did bring up my "diet" to my OB and she was not concerned, except I have NOT gained any weight in months but since baby and stomach are on target, and that she checks for ketones at my bi-weekly appointments, which are normally mid-morning time.

I normally consume 100g/carbs per day but I must admit, some days only 60g.
  • I just met with a dietician last week. So far, I haven't been told to watch for ketones. My carb allowances are as follows:
    Breakfast- 30 grams
    Snack- 15 to 30 grams
    Lunch- 45 grams
    Snack 15-30 grams
    Dinner- 45 grams
    Snack- 15 -30 grams

It appears that the standard, for the most part, is 15g for snacks and 30g for meals!!
