Pool Frustrations - Just Venting

I'm visiting my folks in the Houston area for a week and I'm so frustrated with finding a pool in which I feel comfortable swimming. I'm finding it impossible to get an hour of swimming in a day. At the neighborhood pool, kids are constantly jumping in the lap lane. At the YMCA, people who aren't even swimming laps want to share my lane. All the other pools are closed on Mondays. I don't understand why, in the 4th largest city in the nation, pools are closed on Mondays and pools only reserve one or two lanes for lap swim. I miss my small town community rec. center pool - it may close early on Fridays and Saturdays but at least it has an entire 6-lane pool reserved for lap swimmers.
Anyway, I'm just venting. I guess I don't play well with others when it comes to swimming. How does one share a lane when one is doing butterfly sprints? And is it ok to run over kids who jump in the lap swim lane or would I go to Hell for that?

It can be really frustrating, especially dealing with the kids. There's nothing wrong with asking them nicely to leave the lap lane for people doing laps, if that doesn't work or you're not comfortable with it you can always talk nicely to the parents or lifeguard. For the adults not doing laps, just hanging in the lane (unless they're doing exercises) I'll ask them once & if they don't move I keep swimming....
Butterfly can be tough to do while sharing a lane, but it can be done. One thing to do is try to time your sprint where you leave the wall right behind the other swimmer, going in the same direction (assuming their free is the same pace or a little faster than your fly) - if you're doing 1 lap you should get to the wall when they're pushing off after their turn & passing each other isn't a problem. If you're doing more than 1 lap then you can do a 1 arm pull for the stroke where you are passing each other, using the arm opposite their side to pull & keep your other arm down to your side. You can turn onto the pull arm side to gain a little more room too......0 -
i also have issues with the amount of time that the lap lanes are open, or how many they close at peak times when people are more likely to be using them. i would talk to the guards and let them know about the kids in the lap lanes . .i find a lot of times they just aren't paying attention and once it's brought to their attention, they monitor it a bit more.
it seems that more likely than not in our pool, i come back down the lane and another lane is closed and we are all bunched up and circle swimming is hard . . .i don't mind sharing, and generally stay to one side so someone could easily hop in and share, but i am also not doing fly . . .I can't do that at this point . . .
stupid pools and all their rules and kids who want to swim . . what's that about lol0 -
How does one share a lane when one is doing butterfly sprints?
Smack 'em a few times until they leave.
Kids in the lap lanes is a safety issue the lifeguards need to address. If they don't do anything talk to the aquatics director. I've plowed into a kid unexpectedly in my lane on several occasions and it's never a pleasant experience for either of us.0 -
