Hi everyone,
I just joined up this morning and although I've used MFP in the past, it's been a while. This time I am determined to get this weight off, after having hit an all time high. My downfall is exercise. I work 50-60 hours week and I do love my job, but I come home pretty wiped out and ready to hit the couch. Right now I am having some pain issues so even going for a walk isn't in the picture. But I do live in Florida and I can get in the pool, if the weather cooperates!
Looking forward to getting to know y'all. I am 63 with my next birthday creeping up quickly. My goal is to retire in a couple of years and have 5 acres waiting for me to plant veggies and fruit trees. I just need to be healthy enough to take care of them!

Hi Jean, welcome, welcome I faced my weight today and am determined like you to lose weight. I think cutting calories is priority for me. Then exercise. Do what you can while you heal. Living in FLorida with BIG dreams sounds nice. I live in Hawaii and am semi-retired. I haven't worked for going on 2 yrs now since turning 60. I have way too many excuses for gaining 14 lbs since joining MFP 3 yrs ago. I am happy to give and get support with you if you like. Welcome!0

Welcome . Good luck with all your dreams and plans. I have been retired for a while and live in Northern California so getting out is usually not a problem. But doing it is another / thing
I try not to focus on past and future when it comes to weight loss. I plan for today and say to myself...Can I just do it today?
Be kind to yourself ----and you will enjoy reading comments , participating and sharing with this wonderful group.0 -
Welcome Jean. It took me a long time to get my motivation to start to lose weight.....this time! One issue is that due to health issues, I can do very little exercise and I knew I really needed to watch what I eat. Although weight loss without exercise is not ideal, it can be done. Getting into the pool is a good idea especially as the weather gets hotter. Good luck reaching your goals.
This may be the most supportive group on MFP.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Yesterday I actually managed to get in a little bit of exercise which is my biggest stumbling block! Next weekend I'm heading up to my 5 acre property where there is plenty of yard work to keep me moving, so no excuses there. We have our RV parked there right now so at least there is some air conditioning to revive me!
Have a wonderful week everyone,

Welcome, Jean! So glad you could join us!
The pool idea is great and water jogging is fun! You can also find water exercise on the internet.
There have been many of us who hated exercise for a variety of reasons. It was so difficult at first, but we found something that finally clicked and it is now just part of our daily lives.
I, too, am still working. I don't get home until 6 p.m. and get up the next morning at 5:30. My job is pretty active and I almost always have over 10,000 just at work (many days by noon). I have found though that it is best to just do it after work. Don't sit down. Don't eat. I started with just 20 minutes.
I don't have a problem with the health issues right now. But that is how I got to this place. My health issues had gotten to point where I had to do something, yet good enough that I could do something. As I lost and as I moved, the health issues have gotten better and it has become a "not so vicious" circle. The sheer freedom of feeling healthier, makes me want to do more! In fact, I think I might need to have some of my meds cut at my next visit.
Any exercise will help. Do what you can without pain and suffering! We will all encourage you!

Thanks for the encouragement, Charlie. I am only 2 weeks into this but I already feel better and just came in from another stab at movement in the pool. The water temp is up to 90 today, much more to my liking! I live on the water and my pool faces north so there is always a nice breeze, even though it is summer in the Florida sun.
What do you use to track your steps at work? I have been thinking about purchasing a fitbit or a UP24, still doing research for what seems to be the best. Any experience with any of these?
Looking forward to more successes. Congrats on your loss and improved health!

I use a Omron. Just simple one. Gives total steps. Miles. Calories. Aerobic Steps. and Aerobic Steps per Minute. I also use this usually if I walk the track. When I walk outside, I use MapMyWalk on my Android smart phone. Sometimes I use the pedometer on my phone if I forget to put on my Omron.
A lot of people here have Fitbits though and I think that is a really good option. I want to get a heartrate monitor to sync with some of this stuff, but that's later. What I do works for me, but it takes more effort and calculations. Especially if I have several different types of walks during the day!0 -
Jean, welcome from another newcomer! I fully get it with it being tough to find time to exercise, that has been one of my downfalls too. I am currently trying to find 30 minutes during the workday to get a walk in, which has worked for me in the past. I like the MapMyWalk app too, simple to use and I can start my walking music right from the app.
Welcome to the group, we are all in this together! - JB0 -
Hi JB,
Feel free to add me as a friend...I can use all the support I can get and will give as much as I can back. I am hoping to retire in another couple of years, and have five acres of land waiting for my gardens and my animals. Fortunately I have a terrific son in law who loves my property and does a lot of the heavy work there for me. Hopefully he and my daughter will build on one end in a few years. I know that I can't maintain it alone. Having gardens, fruit trees, chickens and maybe raising our own beef is what I am looking forward to, and being fit enough to do it is huge!

Hi Jean: welcome :flowerforyou: I know how you feel about being the heaviest you have ever been! That is my history too, and motivated me to join MFP and I lucked in and found this wonderful group! Wonderful you have a retirement plan to which you are working! I am one of the happy sloths of our very energetic group :blushing: and am still happily losing weight! I do take it quite easy with the exercise but as Charlie mentioned I am just moving more than when I first started! Athlete or Sloth, everyone is welcome. Good luck! Cheers, Marian0
