Q&A thread

Please do not post answers here, only questions.

The purpose is twofold:

1) What general questions do you have?

2) What questions would you like answered from various smart people in the industry?

We may have a few more interviews coming up, so I wanted to get a feel for what sorts of things our ETP members would like information on.

Sara and I may take a stab at these when time permits, or we may just use this to generate good interview questions.

Thanks!
Patrick

Here are a hand full of general questions for you. Hope that this helps. You may have covered all or part of these in previous posts. We all truly appreciate the time and effort that you and Sarauk2sf have given to us all.

If a person is not near Minnesota, what criteria would you recommend they use when choosing a quality trainer?

Criteria used to choose a quality gym?

I typically use common sense, macros and moderation in my diet, but are there any foods or beverages that you would avoid or at least severely limit? Why?

If you could only recommend three books or other sources of information regarding health and fitness, what would they be?

What supplements would you recommend for males looking to build strength as well as size? What stage of their fitness journey would you recommend they begin taking or stop taking said supplements?

What supplements would you recommend for females looking to build strength as well as overall toning? What stage of their fitness journey would you recommend they begin taking or stop taking said supplements?

For those newer to strength training, is it possible to have a good, balanced program with dumbells only, no barbell? I've got a 40kg set and wonder how far they'll get me.
If you've had a lower back injury that rules out deadlifts, any recommendations for a balanced program including some back strengthening that excludes these?

So, broken record here, but I would really love to hear what the smart folks think about modifying TDEE/BMR, etc. with metabolic issues. There's usually some sort of caveat or mention in most articles that is similar to "assuming no metabolic or medical conditions" ... but there's not a lot out there to help those of us who do that them. I realize it's somewhat unique to each person, but there are enough people with issues that you would think an educated comment might be reasonable, but I honestly think most experts add in the throwaway line and maybe don't put thought into it, so I'm asking if they can do that, please and thank you. =)

I'd like to know if there really is such a thing as a plateau, when your weight just stubbornly refuses to drop even though you're tracking accurately and otherwise following the same routine. At some point you can't really restrict any more so what is the best way to break a plateau? They say weight loss starts in the kitchen, and I'm more of a IIFYM's type, but is there a way to switch up your food intake to break a plateau without restricting intake? Or is the best way to break a plateau to increase exercise?

I've pretty much been stuck at the same weight for a couple of months now (up or down the same couple of pounds) and can't seem to figure out how to move on from here.

Does a person just keep doing what they've been doing because a plateau is just part of the process or do you need to switch things up and where do you make the changes?

I'd like to know what luluinca asked as well. And can being at a deficit too long hinder progress?

Measure all food, got a Fitbit, follow IIFYM, no metabolic issues, no weight loss for over a year. Over 2 yrs, I've changed my deficit from large to small, small to large. Recently, I've thrown the towel in and working my way back up to MFPs maintance calories.

What effect does eating too few calories actually have?

Asking on behalf of someone who asks me why they cant lose weight.

i.e. They supposed to eat 1800 currently for their goals, If they only eat say 1000 calories, because of factors like not wanting to put fast food in their system and and end up overeating by a lot, and time issues. She states she isn't really hungry much, and has started to drink more water. However the scale isnt moving with a 800 calorie deficit and even more when she works out.
