Protein Smoothies?

I am slowly easing into a Primal/paleo diet (partially so I can use up non-paleo food in the house, partly to ease my husband into the idea). We currently drink green smoothies for breakfast (whey protein powder, almond milk, spinach and blueberries with ice). I have to wait to eat breakfast due to thyroid medication os I workout first. The smoothies are refreshing after a workout and filling. Im never really in the mood for hot food after working out. We love them! I'm sure whey protein powder isn't paleo... any thoughts on a substitution for the powder or do you suggest converting breakfast to paleo last?

While it's not technically "orthodox" Paleo, protein powders can have their place in a healthy Paleo diet, so don't worry too much if you can't switch it over right away. Just make sure you get the best quality you can.

Another option is to put an egg into your smoothie. I know, it sounds gross, but it actually shouldn't be eggy. Or, you can use almond butter.

Alternatively, make quiche or egg muffins and have them with your smoothie (sans protein powder). They're pretty good cold, and you can have all sorts of stuff in them.

I wouldn't sweat the whey powder in the beginning. At first its nice to focus on getting the processed grains and sugars out...play around with post workout nutrition later unless you suspect the whey is messing up your system I'd keep doing it for a few months while you transition.
