 Hi ladies, I just started low carbing about three weeks ago.I kind of started doing it accidently because I was trying to calorie count and keep below 1400 cals a day and decided it would be easiest if I stopped having lots of carbs to keep calories down. This kind of morphed into atkins over a few days ( after reading up about low carbing), so I didnt exaactly do a strict induction. At first I lost about 7lbs but seem to have stopped losing already ( stayed at 9,8 for last few days) . I started at 10 stone 1 and went down to 9 stone 8. At first I felt really tired and found myself having the odd nap when I could which is very out of character for me. I got some keto sticks and found I was in keto so think I had a keto flu. Anyway, after a few days of feeling totally shattered, all of a sudden I couldnt get to sleep at all. I've spent the last four nights lying awake and probably got about two hours sleep each night. The weirdest thing is that I wasn't at all tired during the day, but I love my sleep ( I have a two year old so sleep is my sanctury ) I looked this up on tinternet and found out this is quite common with atkins. People advised to eat some carbs, called carb cycling, to help me sleep so yesterday I had a bit of toast for breakfast and half a baked pot for lunch. Last night I slept like a dream and my weight hadnt changed this morning but I'm terrified I will pile weight back on if I eat any more carbs. I feel really emotional today and confused as to what to do! Theres so much conflicting advice out there. Sorry about the long rant but I was just wondering if anyones had experiance of this. Should I start over again or have a little carb. Argghh! Why can't I make bloody decisions!

I would suggest starting back over. You've only been at it for a short while, and it will take a little time for all the benefits of keto to kick in. I know once I got past the keto flu and all that (about 5 weeks in initially), I slept like a baby and still do. I've also noticed where before I needed at least 8+ hours of sleep, I now only need about 4-6.0

I had the same problems last time I did keto properly, and it took me 5 or 6 weeks to properly adjust. Now I get naturally tired about 10pm and sleep straight through til the alarm at 6.30am, but no longer need to hit snooze!
Also - are you still having caffeine? I found it a struggle to give up, but it seemed to help me0 -

Hi MzSmithe,
I am a little confused, is the Coffee (caffeine) good for keto or not. I am a coffee drinker and have two long black coffees (with coconut oil) per day. Thank you!0 -
Hey Dreza! I found that kicking caffeine the second time I did a keto diet helped me get over the insomnia phase much faster. Caffeine is (generally) fine for keto. For some people it can cause an insulin spike, so it's worth investigating its effects on you. Insulin spikes can lead to carb cravings for me, and also seemed to slow my weight loss down. Everybody is different though, so if it's working for you, keep at it0

I don't have any problems with caffeine. However, yesterday I tracked my blood sugar after certain "events" and It's very clear for me, caffeine does cause an insulin spike for me, regardless if it's coffee or another caffeinated beverage. My blood glucose numbers nearly doubled after one cup of coffee and barely moved at all when I ate.
Kicking caffeine will be HARD for me, but starting Monday, I'm willing to give it a try.
Also, caffeine and insomnia are not issues with me, just wanted to share my findings on blood sugar and caffeine.0 -
Good luck strawmama - let us know how you get on!0
