Chewing Satisfaction

Ok kids, does anybody have any suggestions for incredibly chewy food? I don't need to eat, I just need to chew. Honestly, I'm feeling jealous of those rawhide dog treats, wishing there were something similar for humans that I could gnaw on. Chewing gum is not an option. We were told not to chew it. But if somebody develops a roast beef and onion flavor, I might risk it.
I'm starting to think a lot of my eating issues were nervous issues and with my back, I can't just go and 'walk it off'.
Help.

I don't remember what stage of the process you are at. But what about chewing on some beef jerk, and spit it out if your not at the stage where you can eat it.. Mind you I wouldn't want that do that to often in case it became a habit or it could turn into a binge purge type response. But if you are in a real pickle I guess you could try it. I am just answering the question that you asked not necessarily recommending it. Good luck, I remember what is was like, all I wanted to do was nah on something. Take comfort that you will be on to the next phase pretty soon.0

I was just thinking that might work. I'm allowed to eat beef jerky, just sometimes I want to chew, but I know my stomach is already full and it's just the chewing I want.
No worries about setting up a binge/purge cycle. No eating disorders here, just this need to chew. It's kind of illuminating that it's been nerves and not hunger, or even head hunger, that drove me.0 -
Darn, thought I had some suggestions, but everything I began to write down would just replace food with a different habit that may be hard to break (chewing on a straw, toothpick, etc.).
What about chewing on ice?0 -
no, something savory in my mouth and chew chew chew. It's really weird. Ice wouldn't do much for the dental work and I'd have to make it first! I've tried straws, etc, but I end up making myself more nervous. I think the jerky is a good idea. Although it's like to become my primary protein source.0

i had to have celery at almost every meal the 1st 5 months to just get the crunch i craved. most of my snack back then was yogurt dip with celery or baby carrots. i would avoid any chewing between meals. we all have that problem of medicating with chewing for nerves or boredom. it is a habit we are supposed to be breaking. consider replacing it with sipping your fluids. at 8 months out i still feel the desire to crunch, especially while driving or being on the computer but i choose not to....and yes, it was very hard in the beginning to break that habit. it took a lot of prayer.0

Glad that there is no ED to mess things up. I know I love the chewing with the jerky, but I don't like all the sodium with all the commercial ones. I haven't made my own jerky, but I have been really considering it. Good luck.
P.S. I understand the nerve/boredom wanting to chew. Tough habit to break, just keep trying something that works for you.0 -
Chew gum! Seriously...chew gum! I'm not saying all the time but once in a while it's great just to give you some flavour early out. I do have to be careful about the sugar alcohols increasing my gas.
I was craving some flavour and ended up having a piece of sugarless gum a couple months out. I accidently swallowed it and started to panic. I went on OH and someone told me I would have to go to the ER and have my stomach scoped. I could die...it could get stuck...blah blah blah. I was beside myself.
My husband said to drink a bunch of water and just relax because I eat food that is much bigger than a small piece of gum.I was still freaking out so I emailed my surgeon and he got back to me right away. I figured he'd tell me to go to the ER...scold me...etc. NOPE...he told me to drink a bunch of water and relax. My husband was cracking up!
I started using Kale chips that I bake off to give me my salty crunch when I need it. But honestly, I chew gum, have swallowed it once and lived to tell! :-)0 -
I've never been a gum chewer. It always gave me a headache. And I'm TERRIFIED of it now. Such horror stories we heard in the classes of people chewing gum and ending up in surgery...
LOL! Somebody at my support group confessed to eating popcorn. We're told not to, that it could get stuck. She ate hers mindlessly. The bowl went around and she took some and popped it into her mouth without thinking. Her husband pulled her aside, "What're you doing?" he says. So now she's all panicked because she had this popcorn and we're told don't eat it, it will get stuck. So she goes home and WAITS, undecided if she should call in and confess to popcorn. Finally, three days later, she does so, asking, "Is something bad going to happen?"

Yup..I've broken that rule too. Just plain popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave. But...that's now that I am a year out. I didn't have popcorn early on. I have about a cup or two and it satisfies me when I am in a munchy mood. I figure it's way better than reaching for the potato chips!
Honestly, nothing has ever been "stuck" but I try to eat slowly. The stories people come up with truly make me laugh about what will happen to them.
Now..I am not advocating breaking the rules...just using some common sense. :-)0 -
a little off topic: However at my clinic we were told nothing about not eating popcorn. Thou we were warned about celery and gum.0

Don't chew and spit out food. That is not a good thing. I have been told it is very habit forming. I had the same temptation post-op, talked to the MD about it, and was strongly discouraged.
I don't have suggestions about chewy food, other than you should avoid chewy food if it is not on your diet. It sucks to crave something that you can't have, but controlling cravings is what the tool of WLS is supposed to be about.0 -
I remember well going in for a checkup and telling the PA and NUT that I have got to have something to chew! Normal to feel this way, but remember, there is a reason they want you to wait to start eating solids again, so hang in there and wait. Your stomach needs to finish healing. As for gun, we are told to avoid gum because it's supposed to cause air in the stomach. Not sure how that works, maybe we swallow air as we chew? Anyway, if you try it and get uncomfortable, it's the aire they were warning you about.
As for popcorn, I was told a year out I could have that, but watch the salt and calories. I typically get "Smart Foods" white cheddar popcorn, much healthier. Or some form of microwave popcorn. Warning though! It really is sneaky, you don't get a full feeling, so can over eat this badly. Measure out a serving, do not eat out of the bag or a big bowl. Just saying, I've learned from experience, I can overeat popcorn more than anything else.

I don't use the air dry method because I have a nice dehydrator that makes jerky in about 5 hours. Sometimes If its not too busy I can sweet talk the meat department to slice the meat for me to get nice even slices for jerky.0
