Starting over tips?

I started Whole30 a few days ago and caved at the end of day 2. I felt so sick and caved and ate a turkey burger with BREAD :( now I've relapsed and ate cookies and other junk food. I have a bad sugar addiction and I want to eliminate sugar from my diet but it is very hard. I felt dizzy, nauseous, had a hunger headache, and overall crappy so I pretty much gave up and feel like a failure. I really want to make this change for health reasons and for vanity reasons. Any tips on being sucessful with this diet? Did anyone else feel sick when starting this diet? Day 2 I ate 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast and a banana, cucmbers with vineager/pepper and oranges and bluberries for lunch.

Yup, start over. You need some better planning and probably some prepping. Feeling ill when you start is normal. It levels out after about 2 weeks. You are in withdrawl from carbs and sugar. Sounds like you need A LOT more protein and fat. And if you're trying to lose weight, limit your fruits to 1-2 per day. I'll send you a friend request. My diary is open to friends. Take a look. :)

It is really tough to just drop everything in one day, I am not a fan of starting anything like that when you have your life riding on it. just make a decision to drop sugar or wheat for a few days or a week then drop something else. You have to really be disciplined to drop everything in one day.
  • Thanks Carrieann8! I will try again tomorrow but will prep today and make some things ahead of time. I hope I don't feel sick again it was awful I felt so weak and nauseous! It's so tough finding things I like to eat because I am very picky. I love greens (kale, spinach, collards, brocolli rabe) so maybe I will live off that for 30 days. I am not a huge meat eater though so I will have to try and incoporate some more meat in my diet.

ClutchBone it is very very hard to drop everything in one day especially when you eat tons of sugar and processed food everyday. I might have to take a few days off work to be sucessful. I want to be healthy and lose weight so so bad I will attempt cutting everything out and if all else fails I will just cut out sugar then processed foods then bread.

I was and still am a very determined person so it was pretty easy for me to do. The one thing that gets me psyched and keeps me going is looking at the bad food with pure scorn, it never treated me good so I get real angry at wheat and grains and any other food that stumbles me (it works for me anyway). I also have relearned how to cook and prepare food, in my house I am the only paleo person (there are 6 adults here) so I do not have the option of cleaning out the pantry, I deal with moving the potato chips everyday in search of food I can eat.

If jumping into a Whole30 is too difficult (I was Primal for about a year before I did a W30) try something a bit easier. However, the most important things: drop the wheat and sugar. No excuses. Watch those fruits too. While you are fighting through sugar addiction they will NOT help you. I would actually recommend avoiding them (except maybe small portions of berries) for as long as it takes to get through the craving/bingeing. Bananas are not my friend (I've heard some info lately that green bananas are more healthful due to resistant starch, but once they are ripe the benefit is gone) and I rarely eat them.

After almost two years here my only hard rule that I never break is "never cheat with wheat". It makes a huge difference with adhering to this lifestyle when I avoid wheat. The other day I stopped at a restaurant and ordered a salad that I thought came with an unbreaded chicken breast. Wrong. I did NOT eat it. I sent it back. Even if I lost my money I would not have eaten it. My holiday was full of treats, and I now feel like crap and have undoubtedly gained 5 pounds, but when I avoid the wheat I have little difficulty getting back to my healthy lifestyle when I get home.

How about fish? Fish is great Paleo/Primal. Try boiling a dozen eggs. I make a lot of salads myself, especially for lunch. Try adding some seeds/nuts to them. Have you made any Paleo salad dressings yet? Pinterest is great for these recipes.

I would encourage you to seek out sources of healthy protein and fats. Greens are good, but I don't think they provide all the energy a body needs. Also, I have read that the nutrients in vegetables are more bio-available when combined with fat (can't back that up, you might want to Google it, it's been so long I don't remember the source, maybe Mark Sisson or Robb Wolf). So I often add avocado to mixed green salad, and pour a generous amount of good olive oil over the top. I top steamed veggies (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower) with butter or ghee. I make paleo mayo as a base for homemade salad dressing. I mash baked squash or sweet potato with butter or ghee or coconut oil. I try to eat nitrate free bacon several times a week, and stir-fry kale or chard or spinach in the bacon fat. Stir fried turnip with onions cooked in bacon fat tastes amazingly like potatoes!

Fat is your friend, if you are cutting out grains and sugar.

Check out some of the resources in the sticky post in this forum. Look at some of the recipe websites. (Nom nom Paleo comes to mind, but there are many.)

No need to feel weak and hungry when you eat this way.

You may well feel awful just starting out but if you can hang in there, pampering your body with good, healthy, satisfying food (which includes protein and decent amount of fat) you ought to start feeling amazing in a week to ten days, from what I've read and heard. It took less than a week for me, but we'd already cut out most processed food years ago due to our kids' serious food allergies.

If you read the testimonials sticky thread, you'll see what you have to look forward to. I know I started sleeping better and experiencing energy (after months, maybe years of feeling tired) by day 3 or 4. It took about six months for my joint pain to resolve, and I had some serious pain in my tendons and ligaments during that six months, that finally went away. All I can figure is that it had something to do with my body detoxing from years of eating dairy and grains. I sometimes get that pain again when I have too much cheese, so I try to limit dairy. I haven't been able to give it up completely...

    Hope this helps.

If jumping into a Whole30 is too difficult (I was Primal for about a year before I did a W30) try something a bit easier.

Just wanted to say, I found a Whole30 too much, too fast when I first tried it too. I baby-stepped my way into a more primal diet before I successfully completed one. I also had to deal with a LOT of emotional stuff around food and my eating before I was able to complete a Whole30.

A Whole30 is a very tough standard to set for yourself (like most things that are worth doing!); don't beat yourself up over not completing it. Instead, figure out why you failed and how to handle it next time, then get out your calendar and plan when you're going to try again. :) It's still a success if you learn something from the experience!

I also second the idea of taking a long weekend to get over the worst of the carb flu. I started feeling much better after about 4 days.

ETA: when I've done Whole30s, the first week or two I'm usually ravenous. I simply give myself permission to eat whatever I want, whenever I want, as long as it fits the guidelines that are set out in the book. My appetite goes back to normal soon enough.
  • Thanks for all the tips and input!! I started (again) today and I feel so much better emotionally and mentally about this. I went grocery shopping yesterday and planned out all my meals for the following week. I made my lunch yesterday and prepped dinner for today yesterday. I included more healthy fats and a variety of foods so I don't get bored.

Sounds like you've laid the groundwork to make a good go of this.
