Getting Started

Running is something new to me. I figured I'd better start somewhere. I downloaded the C25K app. I am having a problem, though. When I start the workout, I can get through to the first 2 or 3 running minutes. Then, I start noticing my legs tensing up and I'm having problems catching my breath in time before the next run minute comes. When this happens my mind is saying, "No, I wasn't ready to stop this is fun." However, my body is like, "No, I'm tired." I am aware that the track is a bike track that happens to be full of hills and curves. So, I do, sometimes, think that maybe the track is too much of a challenge. But, that's what I wanted... something I could build up to. I still haven't been able to finish the first day. I'm not too worried about it b/c I have high hopes that I will get there and that the most important thing is that I'm up and moving (my way of positive thinking). Yet, am I doing something wrong? I don't want to injure myself. Does anyone have any advice they could give for me to improve on what I'm doing?

How fast are you going? I would suggest slowing down during the running if you're having trouble catching your breath. It should be a light jog :)

I'm really not going that fast. I'm more focused on distance instead of speed. I just try to focus on bending my knees and breathing. To me it is a light jog. I just get tired so fast.

Can you speak short sentences while running? If not, you're running too fast. Slow down. It will feel as if you are running "too slow" but you're not. Stay slow and you'll be able to do this. Speed comes with time. You can train for either distance or time but stay slow.

Congratulations on starting. That's the hardest part of learning to run.

You know, I have never thought to see if I can speak short sentences. I'll pay attention to that next time. Thanks for the advice!!

Yes, getting started is the hardest part!! But It's positive thinking that keeps me going back to the track!! :)

Let us know how you do and don't forget to post in this group for all sorts of encouragement.

If you're huffing/puffing, gasping or having any sort of hard time speaking the short sentence, slow down. It's amazing how much that helps. Good luck!
