Does size really matter?

I just had my US done, and they told me the right side was 5.3 cm, and the left side is 4.8. I'm trying to find information online about the size; however, nothing is really coming up. Anyone have any input?

Do you mean an ultrasound of your thyroid?

They just told me that I had visible nodules—nothing so specific.

I just looked for normal size of the thyroid gland. The title in blue was, "Thyroid Ultrasound" this was at the bottom of the box which came up first. It reads " each lobe is 4 to 6 cm long and 1.3 to 1.8 cm in thickness and weighs between 15 to 25 g. hope this helps. ( I think this surprised me. I had supposed it was thumb nail size but I really had no idea.) Thank you, this explains a lot.

I'm just going through the process of doing all of these tests & it is irritating & confusing. I feel most of the reference sites I've been to are not helpful whatsoever! Thank you all for responding!

I was given an ultrasound (which detected a goiter, aka nodules on my thyroid) and blood test for hormones (T3, T4 & TSH), and the presence of antibodies.

Your thyroid can become enlarged - it becomes a problem when it continues to grow and simply put gets in the way as it out grows it's space. My was enlarged and as it became larger and larger it was time to biopsy etc. There is so much information out there it's hard to retain it all. Good luck!
