I like today's thread starter a lot. I used to be the queen of justifications & excuses, and it got me nowhere. When it comes to my workouts, I don't let myself have excuses. This week I'm on a running rest break because of my foot - that's not an excuse, it's a valid reason. "I don't feel like it" or "I'm just too tired" are excuses, so I don't let myself get away with that. That strategy does not work as well for me for my eating because really nothing is off limits on my diet. I've lost quite a bit of weight that way, and it's a way of eating that is sustainable long-term, so I don't want to change that by making certain foods off limits. Maybe it can just be no excuses as to calories. I'm doing pretty well during the week but man weekends I'm struggling.
Maureen I hope you enjoyed your visit with your sister! Was it a day trip or did she come to stay with you?
Marla your hair is super cute! Glad the air is clearing there & you're able to get outside. How was your margarita party?
Congrats Jess! I have been strength training for nearly 18 months now & it's so rewarding. I genuinely enjoy it. My advice to you is focus more on your body comp and less on what number is on the scale. It's just a number. My friends on here who have been successful with maintenance have taken the approach Valma said - they changed very little about how they eat, except for adding a couple hundred calories a day. They're maintaining the lifestyle that helped them lose the weight in the first place. Unless you're wanting to really bulk (like a body builder) you're not going to need to go crazy with your calories. You can eat at maintenance and get toned.
Valma glad your hand is starting to feel better! I've been staying away from Candy Crush because the people I know who play it can't stop, so I'm just avoiding the addiction completely. LOL. Congrats on a good food day yesterday! I really struggle with that on my rest days in particular.
Sherry I hope everything is going okay!
Donna, in case you check in - how are you settling back into being home from your trip?
The pool yesterday will definitely be a last resort going forward. There are retaining walls on either side of the lanes and apparently that's a great place for kids to jump in the water - unfortunately they were jumping into the side with the lanes, which I suppose is deeper - so periodically a kid would come down way too close to me for comfort. There were also a couple of girls old enough to know better who would just stop and tread water in the middle of my lane. At one point something hit the top of my head - there was a small boy (maybe 2?) standing behind me who apparently threw sand/small rocks on me. He gave me a cheerful hello and ran away. I was able to get some laps in but there were so many distractions it wasn't much fun.
Today I have gym homework - 90 minutes of cardio (on some combination of the spin bike, elliptical & rowing machine) and I have 4 sets of 15 reps of 4 different leg exercises (squats with a 35-45# kettlebell, hip exercises with an ankle band, inner thigh machine, and one-legged leg curls on the Swiss ball). So that will take a couple hours. My trainer seems to think that if he exhausts me at the gym today, when I work out with him tomorrow I will not be cranky about missing my long run this weekend.
Have a great Sunday.0 -
Had a rotten run today.
The three driving vacations, to St Louis (& New Jersey), Toronto area, and Houston, one after another, in addition to work location switches in between them, have messed up my routine, food, and digestive system. I have spent too much time in the car, too much time in areas I didn't know and had difficulty finding time and places to run, too much time eating what I could get vs planning my food, and too little time sleeping. In addition to getting food when traveling, even when I've been home, I haven't been sure if I would be working in an area with a refrigerator or not or whether I would have time for snacks or just a lunch break. Then I'm baby-sitting the dog of a friend of mine. the dog can be difficult as he gets into trouble whenever I leave him for any length of time, even if crated. So that's another source of stress. Sleep has been tough.
I've been bouncing around what I should be doing. Nothing has gone wrong or bad or spiraled out of control or anything, but I don't have the clear pattern in front of me that I had for the past year.
I've decided that the 2 lbs I went up are real and need to be lost again, however they are just two pounds.
I went to my trainer workout on Wednesday, and metabolic conditioning class on Saturday morning, and ran both to and from them. But, didn't get anything done on Thursday or Friday except doing some stair workouts during work. Today was supposed to be my long run. I'm so off my half marathon plan that I figured I'd just run 8 miles this morning and then figure out what I really should be doing for the next 6 weeks this afternoon. I managed 5 miles, then my nose was running, my throat felt like it had something in it and I kept coughing, my digestive system was in revolt, and my glasses wouldn't stay on my face. They kept sliding off. Oh and my knee hurt. I was more that 3 miles from home, so I ran/walked back home as best as I could. Even now, hours later, my legs (actually my whole body) still feel stiff and sore and I feel tired all over.
I have 6 weeks until my half marathon, so I need to figure out what to do now, come up with a plan, and get myself together.0 -
Donna considering how much you traveled, the 2 pounds are nothing. Kind of a miracle actually. When I trained for my half I had to bump up my calories. I struggled with finding the balance of eating enough to fuel the extra miles (on top of my regular workouts, which I kept up) and not eating too much because I was hungry all the time once I got into double digit long runs. My best advice is not to worry about those 2 pounds until after your race.
Because your schedule was off it's not surprising your running took a hit too. You may need to scale back a bit and build back up. It won't take as long as it did the first time around, but since your running hasn't been consistent you can't just jump back in where you left off either. Today was a bad run, but don't let that mess with you mentally. You're going to have them, and that's part of the deal. My first 11 mile run was horrible and left me shaken, but my 12 mile run was just fine. Come to think of it I haven't run 11 miles since then, and that distance doesn't appeal to me at all.0 -
I took my first body fat percentage reading today. I am in the average range, but I want to move into the fitness/ideal range. So, that means I will have to start strength training with sincerity. I do cardio to keep from maintaining weight, but I keep reading that if there is no resistance training, then some of the weight lost is muscle. I'm sure I don't have much to start with, I haven't lifted weights since high school. But I want to be more than skinny-fat, I want to be fit. So going to start a new program tonight!0

Fire is 25% contained, 6 miles from me but they have done a great job keeping it from jumping hwy to go this direction.
The national guard is here for all the fires, so lots of help flew in from all over. The air pressure has kept smoke gone last 5 days it's been back to almost normal summer other than seeing all the helicopters and planes.
I swam only today. Tomorrow busy we have company probably just swim again, doing errands so won't be online.0 -
Laura - Bummer about the pool! Our pool has lap swim lanes set up, but the life guards are pretty good at telling the kids to stop when they are messing with the lanes. I've never had the problems you've mentioned! I gotta be honest, I'm not a fan of parenting other people's kids, but I would probably have made an exception there and had a polite but firm discussion with the kids jumping into and treading in my lane. (the 2 year old can't help it).
. Glad I don't have to deal with that since swimming is my favorite thing!
Donna - I know how you feel! Between the long travels by car I had and the womenly issues and my injured hand my whole routine is completely out of whack! So I'm in the same boat, just basically trying to keep afloat without losing it. I'm actually looking forward to school starting so I can get back into an better routine.
Are you able to get back into a routine now that the traveling is done? I always aimed to just finish during times of illness or stress. You can only do the best you can do with the circumstances you've been given. No use stressing over the rest. Still 6 weeks, which isn't a ton of time, but it's better then next week.
You still were able to make it 8 miles...even if you didn't run it all. That's almost 3/4 of the distance. You should be fine if you just slowly push yourself (without overdoing it and causing injury). If all else fails, walk parts of it, where a funny t-shirt and just encourage those around you. Be their cheerleader!
Jess - yep, pretty much everything I've read stresses the need for strength training. even endurance athletes put in plenty of strength training to give them the force to push hard. Muscle is the best way to burn fat.
Marla - Glad to hear there are some positive things, even with the fires!
It is a very stressful week for me. I was trying to do everything and it was stressing me out. Our church is getting a new logo and new Sunday school curriculum, promoting kids this week to the next grade classrooms, etc. We're also painting the preschool hallway this week from bland to something more warm and inviting. It's all very exciting, but since I'm the preschool coordinator it is also very stressful. So I finally had to decide that getting enough sleep, eating well, and actually spending some time with my family (especially my oldest who will be going to first grade, and full day school for the first time) was the most important. So my workouts have been nonexistent this week. But as a result I haven't been stress eating. I'm a terrible emotional eater and with all this pressure I was sure I would crack. But I've been getting enough sleep, eating well, and no migraines today! So I think I made the right choice. Everything will be done by the end of this week and then I can get back into a routine again. Just gotta survive until then! Have a great week everyone!0
