take your food reports from MFP back to your nut and see if they can find if there is a dietary component. try editing one food at a time from your diet to see if you get improvement. i cannot eat very much luncheon meat or keilbasa style sausage, horrible reflux and my PPI wont work. bacon is fine as is chicken or turkey sausages. i also cant eat much precooked meats like fajita chicken or pre made bbq or pre made roast beef. salt way to high

I still suffer from fairly significant acid reflux -- my doc told me up front that VSG does not fix reflux and in fact might make it worse.

I have tried several PPIs pre- and post-op. Strangely enough, although omeprazole/Prilosec does not work well for me at all, Zegrid (over-the-counter), which is omeprazole with bicarb (baking soda), works amazingly well.

I did notice that Nexium just came out as over-the-counter, and that is one that I haven't tried.

I had acid reflux for many years prior to surgery. My PCP asked me to stop taking my Omaprozel (generic Prilocec) for a few days recently. His thought was that the weight loss may have eliminated the reflux. No such luck! I got rid of my BP meds about 80 pounds ago, but it looks like the reflux meds will stay.

Mangopickle could be right though. If you didn't have it prior to surgery, it could be something specific that's triggering it now. I also have heard that eliminating carbs altogether helps to get rid of it without meds. I haven't tried it, but know someone who swears it worked for her. She also is normal weight without surgery. Don't know if that makes a difference or not. But really. How restricted is a diet that has no carbs? Is that even healthy?

My WLS surgeon told me the sleeve can make GERD or acid reflux worse for a while right after surgery. I had bad acid reflux pre op for years. When they did my sleeve they found a hital hernia and repaired it while in there and I haven't had any more acid reflux post op from sleeve and hital hernia. I think it might be because I can't eat and drink at the same time like I did before and I am taking smaller bites of food and chewing them up good. I was a PP post op for about 3 weeks and haven't taken any since then.
Talk to your surgeon about it.
    Good luck!

I'm 3 weeks post-op and have been having a terrible time with it. I never had acid reflux until now. Afternoon is the worst time for me!

Thanks for your input guys. Mine is an extreme case. I've been in pain 24/7. The acid is burning my throat and lungs. Doctors don't know what to do. They say I may be hypersensitive to pain. I just can't function.

    Which PPIs have you tried?

Have you also tried adding a Histamine blocker like Zantac or Pepcid?

    Do Tums help?

Have you tried a food diary like Mangopickle suggested?

Is it related to meal timing?

It may take some teamwork with your surgeon and dietitian to determine a cause and a solution. You may need to ultimately have a GI consult if your surgeon can't figure it out.

These are the ones I tried:

    1st-3rd week post op: Pepcid
4th-7th week post op: pantoprazole 40mg twice a day
2nd -3rd month: dexilant 60mg, reglan and carafate
I saw a GI doctor yesterday. He put me on Zegerid 40 mg twice a day and Pepcid twice a day. He also put me on amytriptyline. 50mg twice a day for my hypersensitivity . My endoscopy says everything is normal.

i was told vsg often makes gerd worse…it has with me as well. not much helps..i was told that possibly the only thing that will is if i was to have "part 2" and end up with gastric bypass. it certainly can be miserable. hope you get relief

As I said, I've had reflux for years, but I was diagnosed in my 40's with asthma. The pulminary specialist who did the diagnposes said my acid reflux was causing my asthma. Inhaling acid vapor that was bubbling into my esophogus would bring on the asthma attack.

If your reflux is causing buring in your throat and lungs, find something to control it quickly before it causes lasting damage.

PS - my reflux is well controlled with Omaprozel (generic Prilocec) and because it is, I can't tell you the last time I had an asthma attack.

I have a haital hernia that is causing reflux. I'm having it repaired in Oct. I was taking Prilosec with little result, but my doc just switched me to Nexium. Have you tried that?

The problem is that my endoscopy showed a perfect esophagus and stomach. No inflammation, nothing. So, when I say that I'm in pain 24/7, they can't find a medical explanation. The burning is killing me, but they say that, if this was really true, the acid would have caused a lot of damage. My next step is to see an ent doctor. Maybe he will believe me, because I'm sure my throat is damaged.

I've seen stories of people who converted to a bypass and still had acid reflux, so I'm feeling so hopeless. I wish I could find someone who could tell me that the reflux will get better after some more months, but I've found no one in my condition. I'm getting desperate.

I'm so sorry to hear how bad your situation is. My doc is encouraging me to convert to bypass too. He feels it would help in addition to the hernia repair. But i have said no for now. My reflux is more annoying than painful. Sounds like yours is much worse. I hope the ENT can help you.
