I'll make this VERY short for a change! :-)
As of this morning, I am no longer in the Morbidly Obese category!
This is just a baby step, but it feels pretty dang good! My next BMI step is of course to get out of Obese Class 1 which is 31 pounds away. I still can't see results in the mirror yet (besides my face), but it's only a matter of time.

one silly question, what makes one morbid obese vs just obese????
I know, that at my height I will cross over from obese to overweight at 185 lbs (that is another 24 lbs away).....
I know, it is probably related to the old BMI ???0 -
I forgot, I had a doc in the ER tell me in April, that I was morbid obese....I was kind of offended since I had already lost about 20 lbs.... and the same doc also asked me : "How is your drinking???" (my record says that I am a causal drinker, something like maybe 1 glass of wine in a week....lol).... I made him aware that I found the drinking question offensive and suggested a less offensive wording. I know, most people would not, but I have respect for docs, but they are human and not gods (my parents are both docs,lol).....I did not catch the morbid obese comment until I got home reading the release paperwork after 2 days in the hossy.....too late to ask and believe me I would have asked....stupid me!!!0

Yes, morbidly obese is related to your BMI. A BMI over 40 is morbidly obese, now I'm in the 30's! :happy:0

Yes, the term "morbidly obese" comes from the BMI chart - here's the breakdown:
18.5 or less Underweight
18.5 to 24.99 Normal Weight
25 to 29.99 Overweight
30 to 34.99 Obesity (Class 1)
35 to 39.99 Obesity (Class 2)
40 or greater Morbid Obesity

Another way to look at your fitness level is bodyfat percentage. Here's a link with two bodyfat percentage charts:

Overall, my goal is to obviously lose enough weight so that I'm in the middle of the healthy BMI range. Along the way, I hope to reduce my bodyfat composition.
When I got my bodyfat scale on 8/5, I had a bodyfat percentage of 38.0%. On yesterday's weigh-in, in addition to dropping 10.6 pounds (since 8/5) my bodyfat percentage was 37.0%. That calculates out to 5.64 pounds of fat that I've lost! So, of the 10.6 pounds I've lost - 53% of the weight was in fat. Obviously I'm very happy with that percentage!
I don't know what role my strength training has played into these results (honestly I'm not doing any heavy lifting yet. i'm focusing on proper form and getting my body accustomed to strength training - gradually. i'm only lifting VERY light weight. i do NOT want to injure myself!). All I know is that supposedly muscle burns fact and the more I strength train, the stronger I'll get, and (in theory) I'll have more potential to climb the hill I'm currently afraid to attempt on my bike (I don't want to have to push my bike up the hill - too embarrassing!).
But through typing this out, I remembered something (I can't believe I'm this forgetful). As we do our cardio, not only are we burning calories (and hopefully losing weight), we're strengthening our hearts. Our heart is a muscle that I forgot about until now. A stronger heart will also improve our health! Also, as we do our cardio - another thing we improve is our cardiovascular system (duh!). What I mean by that is that the more higher intensity work we do (don't do too much/too fast because it's NOT healthy!), the more efficient our breathing becomes and the more efficiently we make oxygen.
So to get back to my hill that I want to climb, my strength training makes stronger legs. Stronger legs will give me the power to get to the top. Cardio makes my heart stronger, and my body will have the strength to make it to the top. Finally, cardio will (in essence) give me more oxygen so I can make it to the top (and not be SO out of breath when I finally climb that hill).
So (as usual) my reply was REALLY long. But, it reminded me (and hopefully others) that when we do cardio we're not only burning calories but we're also strengthening our hearts and lungs!
So people, try to take a walk today! I believe that walking is the single most important exercise that people with my girth and condition can do! Even if you can only walk 2 minutes, just get out there and do it!
We can ALL get out of the morbidly obese level, and we can ALL beat obesity! I believe in myself and I believe in everyone in this group! We can beat this thing!

Thank you, 3athlt, for the very clear explanation….. You are getting me thinking to include more strength training (I have not done any yet…)…..
I have, however tried to get at least 10,000 steps in every day (that is about 5 miles and walking from the car to the store, going to the mailbox counts….lol). When I am at home I usually go to the gym (we have a free to us military gym close by) and ride the stationary bike. I try to spend at least an hour on it. Some days we hit the also free pool right next to the gym on the way home and do some water aerobics or swimming. To make my steps I often go for a walk in the evening since a cool evening here is under 90F/32C. I use my fitbit, but have used a pedometer before to keep me on track to get to my steps……..
For a change of pace on weekend we like to go hiking and visit our local water holes (mostly local spring feed creeks and pools). I do want to try kayaking, but I am kind of leery since my hubby and partner in crime has had a neck fusion and a shoulder surgery in the last two years …..
As you say starting to move is key! And every little bit helps. I started out exchanging the elevator for the stairs going down. By now I am up to two flights of stairs either way. I intentionally park further away from the store and we accuse each other for trying to get extra steps in when return a shopping cart…..I still do NOT mow the lawn even so I should. I have tried free salsa dancing classes before (I do have two left feet, but it was fun)…..
Another great exercise for us obese folks is water aerobics…. No, do not think of a pool full of grandmas… I took my hubby. Yes, there were mostly women (20 to 80) there, but a few guys attend regularly. I say this, since this is much easier on your joints and most of those 1hour programs are designed to work every muscle group in the body. Water aerobic and swimming are often suggested as part of the recovery after a surgery. Here in our little Texas town the city has a water aerobics program that runs Monday through Friday during the summer and it costs $1 per 1h . Some local pools will have it or check your local YMCA for classes. An alternative would be to use a local pool and look up some of those exercises on the web. I found plenty of videos…..I was thinking of you, 3athlt, since you are trying to get back to running and biking and of eviebee03 with her problem shoulder when I read this in a web article from fitness magazine ……

You are so right we are not going to run a marathon in a week; Baby steps it is!!! Most of us have to overcome years of bad habits.
I have been at this today for 6 month and 1 day. I saw my doc this morning and I lost one medication (yeah, that dumb Potassium pill was making me feel nausea for most of the day anyways) and I dropped my triglycerides from 552 to 194 (150 or smaller is optimal), got my good cholesterol to a good number from being too low….. and maybe I can get of those pills soon too.
I am mentioning this, since cholesterol, glucose etc are also part of our health too and have an impact on our quality of life. The older we get the more important they become. Let’s face it being obese increases our medical bills, reduces our life expectancy and mostly does not make us happy…… So any improvement is a little victory and hopefully helps us stick with the plan (eat healthy and exercise more)…… Here is to all improvements, big and small…...Let us celebrate them !!!!0 -
So excited! Im out of morbid obesity now! I remember my last bmi was terrible, in the 40s now im in class 2. Cant wait to get to class 1! Feeling good. Oh, and I agree. Walking rocks. I did three ones today during my mission to hospital to see specialist. Yeah. Anyway yay for class 2!0

That's freaking GREAT Evie! :happy: I know the feeling, it's good to be out of the morbidly obese category! It just shows that your hard work and attention to detail are paying off, great job! Stick with it, how about both of us getting into Obese Class 1 by year's end, what do you say???0
