Hello,
I have posted a discussion to the main boards titled the above. However, my question for this group is;

Will I have any side effects of going gluten free after eating gluten every day for my entire life? I just want to know what to expect or hear anyone's experiences.

My only side effects were weight gain because I was recreating too many recipes in gluten free form and reduction of symptoms. :)

The side effects I had were less joint pain, no asthma, clearer skin, comfortable slim tummy with less gas and no runs. Love the side effects!

You probably won't have any negative side affects from a GF diet specifically but like any diet change you could uncover some other food allergies or sensitivities. In a lot of the processed GF products you'll find new ingredients that you may not have been exposed to previously like xanthan gum, guar gum, various bean flours and starches etc... If I could go back and tell myself something when we were first starting out GF it would be to avoid the processed GF products and focus more on cleaner healthier foods. More fruits, vegetables, and lean meats and less trying to duplicate our grain heavy wheat based diet in the GF world.

Thank you so much for you input. I made it through 1 day so far! I didn't replace anything with gluten free snacks, just opted for fruit instead. I'm getting a bread maker for the times I want a sandwich or bread with dinner but I don't plan on buying too many of the processed items except maybe pasta.

I had the most amazing side-effects going gluten free! Clearer skin, flatter tummy, more energy, depression lifting, joint pain leaving. It is wonderful. I am here if you need encouragement!!! I know you will love it, and it is not as hard as it sounds. =)

It gets easier. Just ask them not to put it on the table. Hopefully, you are going with someone who is sympathetic to what you are trying to do. I have a blog (that I have not posted on for a bit--will be starting again soon), but there are some good gluten free recipes on there for muffins, cookies, etc. It is called faithfoodandfriends.com. You are welcome to stop on by!! ~Skye

I looked at your blog and was very impressed. You have gathered together some great looking recipes and present them wonderfully. I saw several muffin and cookie recipes I want to try. The "Amazingly Good, Anything Goes Muffins" looks really versatile and would be great to put in our lunches. I notice you use mainly almond flour. I haven't used almond flour yet so I'm very curious about the flavor and texture. Thank you for posting the link to your blog.

I have been gluten free for a week and a half. I turned to GF food substitutes and wow, did I have a ton of nasty side effects, abdominal pain, diarrhea, malaise, fatigue. I left work early today because I was in so much pain. Tonight I started pro-biotics and I'm feeling a bit better. My plan is to eat single ingredient foods over the next days, like lean proteins, veggies and fruits and pray I start to see the benefit of this sooner than later. I was not expecting this and I've not been able to find too much about it. A friend told me it could take a few weeks. Let's hope it lets up sooner.

When we first started out GF I made some pizza dough and added way too much xanthan gum. It made my whole family sick, I felt terrible (and sick). A lot of processed GF products use similar ingredients to help make up for the lack of gluten . One of my MFP friends is very sensitive to any amount of guar gum and gets very ill if she ingests even a small amount. I think your single ingredient approach is a very good way to go until you figure out what's in the GF products that is making you ill or you may decide to avoid the processed products altogether. Sorry you feel bad :(

I went off wheat (not gluten, particularly, but I don't eat much, if any, of that either) gradually, and so personally I had no obvious side effects. When my husband cut wheat out cold-turkey out of solidarity, he had headaches for about a week. (He's back on it now.) There are some people that go through withdrawal, and others that don't. It probably has something to do with the amount that you had consumed regularly previously.

I've just started out GF, day 3 and I'm in pain lol. Its uncomfortable but it is showing me how bad my body was affected by it. I am slightly emotional, feel like crying. Sleep is a little difficult and feel a sort of glow over my body with a headhache. My gut also hurts. As I said this isn't so unplesent it is making me feel like stopping. Is his common ?

What else are you eating? Just wondering, as some who think they need to go GF have issues instead with FODMAP - you might want to google that as it takes a lot of explanation - best info is from Stanford University Hospital & Clinics. Give it at least another week & a half though, and see if you start to feel better.

Thanks very much I will definitely take a look. I have jest dropped anything with gluten in, swapped over to potato for my main carbs and having fish and protein powder for my protein. I have some gluten free bread and I have quorn (the simple less adulterated stuff) sandwiches. I will have a look at FODMAP 

    Thanks

I have Celiac Disease so, not sure if this applies to others who don't have it but I had gluten withdrawls for a week or two. Bad headaches, upset stomach...ect.

Pretty disappointing when you are told that if you stop eating gluten you will feel better.

However, before I knew I had CD and was eating gluten it got to the point where my gut hurt all the time, terrible gas, liquid poop, headaches, brain fog, and anxiety was an issue. Probably the worst thing was my joints, there were days I couldn't even get out of my car and walk into work it was so bad.

Now, about 5 months of gluten free and I'm feeling pretty close to back to normal.

Carefully check your protein powder ingredients, but you probably already know that, lol. Also, we don't have Quorn in Canada, are there any spices or flavourings involved that may contain gluten? Some people are sensitive to the nightshade family (potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant/courgette, etc). Maybe your issue if you have upped your potato intake by a bit?
