Exercise Ideas

I was wondering what everyone does for exercise I honestly have no idea where to start when I was a lot smaller I used to run, and cheer but never had a set work out. Any ideas for resources or examples of something to start with?

YouTube vids helped me get started (some of those Zumba ones aren't bad depending on what type of music you like). There's also this series (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YI0j8nLiZmE) but I can never get through it. I tend to just walk and try to make sure my pedometer says I've hit 5 miles for the day (if not for my dog, this would not be possible). I also got a stepper and try to do it on especially lazy days.

I enjoy WII Fit, Yoga video's, and there is always the fall back of just walking.
When I get a bit more energy/stamina I will try Zumba and other cardio video's again, but in my current state I wouldn't make it through which would just discourage.

The stationary bike is my bestest friend :drinker: Starting an exercise regimen at 350 was pretty tough for me... First of all, I'm one of those odd people who does not like the feeling of crushing discomfort , which is what power walking, running, and pretty much everything else felt, and still kinda feels like to me :embarassed: BUT.. on the bike, I'm able to move my body, while sitting down... and not putting so much effort in that I dread the utter thought of it... I'm also able to play on my phone while doing it... For so long my image of "exercising to lose weight" looked something like someone red-faced, huffing and puffing to catch their breath, fearful of having a heartache, and looking like death would be a sweet relief lol... I knew I would never stick to a regimen like that so I opted for the, "OK, if I get on this bike and push the pedals, no matter how slow and how little resistance setting, it will be better than sitting down doing nothing..." And so that's how I started, I mean VERY little effort... I'm 2.5 months in now and have lost 30.4lbs... It obviously has a lot to do with me counting my calories, but my stamina has grown so much by starting off slow. When I started 15min and I was sweating and feeling the burn. Now, I can ride for an hour easily and I push harder and faster than I used to... Still not gonna kill myself right now, 319lbs is no place to start training for the Tour de France, but I can say after 2 and a half months... it's actually something that doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities, which is crazy to think about :noway:
Every person is different, you just have to find the thing that you can actually enjoy. The activity that is actually almost appealing to you. ALMOST... lol.. Biking was that for me... And start slowwwwwww... seriously... any movement is more movement and your body will adjust and it's awesome to feel your body be able to do even one more minute's worth every week... I know people say to push until you're uncomfortable... but at my size, SITTING was uncomfortable... Just move... seriously do anything... I've lost 30lbs but I feel like I've lost 100(even though I don't know what that feels like because I've never lost 100 :embarassed: but one day! ) It's just nice to be able to lift yourself up off the chair by using just what you're supposed to instead of having to wrench yourself up with the help of your arms, legs, the chair, some forward motion swinging, etc... You guys know what I'm talking about >.< And I'm still 319lbs :noway: I'm gonna be floating around like tinkerbell at 250lbs at this rate
Good luck! Just find your happy movement and start slow! The best exercise to lose weight is the one you're going to be able to do consistently :drinker:
  • Right now I use an aerobic step and do cardio watching a youtube playlist I've made of upbeat music. I also wear a heart rate monitor. The key is to start off slow, then keep pushing yourself week by week as your endurance grows - and change it up so you don't get bored.

I alternate my workouts and try to take 2 nights off. one night I'll walk on my treadmill at 3% incline trying to always walk at least 1min more than last time. I always do 2mph minimum and if my knees are not killing me, I will bump it up a bit but have not gone beyond 2.3 yet. The next night I use my Hybrid trainer which is half elliptical and half recumbent bike. I just bought it and have used it 2 times so far, but love it! I'm horrible with the elliptical because it's MURDER on my whole body it seems  first time I did only 8:54mins before I got off all wobbly legged  next time I did 10mins and it was better for me. I then get on the recumbent bike part and it's an adventure for short girl with a big belly  trying to get the foot holds adjusted just right takes forever in itself  I need it closer in since I'm short, but then on the upshift of the peddles my knees just can't get any higher because of my big belly  so I'm left squirming to the side in my seat to let my knee pass upwards then back down. it's just too comical  so that first time on it I just did 11:54mins. BUT the next was 30mins!! guess I moved to side quicker to let my knees shift up and down  I forgot to say that before I even do any of this exercise I always first do my strengthening. I was given a resistance band in physical therapy a long while back and use it for leggercises just to stretch my leg muscles out before I get on my machines for the really hard stuff. I also have a resistance tube that came with a leaflet full of exercises to do. I use it for my arms. These loosen me up and help me get excited and ready for my real workouts. I spend maybe 45mins tops right now at this point on my workout routines. I've come a long way from the 15mins I started at in mid July though

For those that aren't as mobile as others, if you can get down (I can get down but getting back up is an issue in itself), floor exercises are great but I not, there are chair exercises that can be found by doing a search.

I've been at this for a few years and do many things now like swimming, exercise bike, jogging, kickboxing class, lifting weights but when I started, it was just with walking.

Thanks for all the ideas! I did my first zumba class yesterday and I loved it:-) I had a little bit of a hard time with bits of it but it was fun and almost didn't feel like exercise.

Good Topic--I LOVE seeing all the anwers!

    I started at 364.

I do a pretty vigerous water dance class twice a week, and on Sunday I swim a mile.

On the other days I play around with videos---I LOVE some Richard Simmons!

I use you tube A LOT---
I like to do the walk videos with Leslie Sansone.
JessicasmithTV has some great walky/dancy videos.

I love my Wii Dance, but the Zumba one was hard on my knees--too much side movment I think.

On my less energetic days I like the Jane Fonda walk.

I wish I could piyo, but so far that is too tough....I am going to keep looking for videos that maybe I could do.

Sometimes, I just turn on some music and DANCE for an hour :-)

I have Comcast/XFinity and use a lot of their workouts that I find OnDemand in the Sports & Fitness section. I started out doing their "walking" videos and am now doing more intense things, like kickboxing and dancing videos. I have started running a little bit now, but I've still got a lot of weight to lose before it would be safe for me to run a lot like I want to. I take my kids for walks very often, and we walk on the beach and boardwalk at least once a week. I also love using my stationary recumbent bike, and I buy fun workout videos, too (many can be found on YouTube!)
