Exercising Again

Alright, so I'll be 4 weeks PP tomorrow. I was wondering how long did all of you wait before working out again? And when you started, what did you start with? I'm wanting to slowly get back into it, but definitely don't want to push my body...still having sore/achy left hip flexor pain (suffered with this pretty bad during pregnancy, caused me to stop running, but didn't stop elliptical/strength training). Just wanted to hear from other Mommies on when they got back into the swing of exercising after baby and what you all do? Thanks!:smooched:

I started back at the gym at 6.5 weeks post partum with my baby who's now 4 months, and I did the same with my other two. I've been lucky to have had easy births with all of them with no tearing.

I went right back into PT sessions, aerobics, step, Zumba, spinning etc, 5 times a week. With 3 kids , it's the only 'me' time I get
  • At 2 weeks PP, I was doing short daily walks (~20 min). Around 3 weeks PP, I started doing yoga classes at the gym 1-2x/week and 1 LIGHT weightlifting session (think rehab weights, high rep), and occasional walks. By 5 weeks I was doing daily hour-long walks, yoga 2x/week, and a moderate weightlifting session. Im 6 weeks PP now and back to work. I'll be increasing the weightlifting to 1-2 hours 3x/week, moderate to intense cardio 3+/wk, maintaining the daily walks after work (weather permitted), and extended hikes on weekends. I was doing 2 hour weightlifting workouts every day before the baby so this is "easy" for me. I know my way around the weightroom so I know which lifts are safer to do than others. I wouldn't necessarily suggest the same for someone that didn't know how to lift safety especially so soon after having a baby.

I had a lot of hip pain during the pregnancy and ended up getting pre-eclampsia and was on limited activity due to low fetal weight in my 3rd trimester so waiting (almost) 9 months to get back to the gym was torture.

I have to be careful though. I still get pelvic pain if I'm on my feet too much and I still have back pain along by spine so I only do safer lifts and don't arch my back. Listen to your body and welcome back to fitness :)

Great info! I'm going to try and take daily easy walks with my baby girl in her Bjorn, did that today and she loved it and it felt really nice for me as well. Running was pretty much my life before pregnancy, and I'm itching to get back to it, but don't want to push it with my hip, so just going to try and take it easy. Planning to hit the gym around 6 weeks PP and start doing easy weight training again -- been trying to do push-ups, dips, ab work, etc. at home -- real easy stuff, which feels good! Definitely don't have all of my energy back yet, so I plan to listen to my body and do what feels good. Eager to get back to it though, exercise is my outlet and my "me" time too!

I started walking early on too, around 10 days I guess. I live right by the sea, and we have a lovely promenade, so my eldest two go on their scooters a lot, and they love going to the beach, so we're out a lot. Now it's Sept my eldest is back at school and my middle one is at nursery 3 days a week, so we do lots of walking there and back, then I take my baby for walks.

I'd wait for the 6 week check before going back to the gym. Even though I've had such easy births, I've still always waited just to be on the safe side.

You're only 4 weeks post partum so don't expect to have all your energy back yet! This is your first I take it? I think it takes a bit longer to get used to the lack of sleep first time round. By the third time I was well used to it lol.
  • Like everyone else said, please wait for the OK from your doctor. At 2 weeks post partum I got sick of my messy house and laying around the house that I got into a super clean mode and I got on the ellipitical. I wound up at the doctor the next morning because I started bleeding excessively and she got onto me for doing too much >.>

Light walking should be ok! Congrats on your new baby btw!!
  • In case you run into this situation, exercising (and the inevitable bleeding or return of the bleeding) is not concerning unless you go through an overnight type pad within an hour (and definitely if this happens a couple hours in a row).
