A1C News

I went in for a "follow up" doctor's appointment (which I really wasn't supposed to have, but I forgot to take it out of my appointment book) and was surprised when my doctor suggested doing an A1C in the office. I had no idea that they could give you the results in 6 minutes. In any event, I was diagnosed on the last day of July, and started making changes as of the first day of August. Between counting carbs, medication (1000 mg. Metformin) and exercise, my A1C went from 11.0 to 8.0. I've lost about 18 lbs. My doctor seemed pleased, but this number is not where it should be. I'm hoping for under 7 on my next visit in January.

That is awesome! You are moving the needle in the right direction! Keep it up and it'll be fun to see what happens to the A1C in January! Thanks for sharing.
  • That's awesome!
  • You've made a lot of progress in under 2 months! It sounds like you're on the right track to continue with weight loss and lowering your A1c. Keep up the great work! ~Lynn/Glucerna

That is really good news. If you keep doing what you're doing, I think you may be under that 7.0 in January. :)

It's not quite as good as having your full labs done, but there are POC (Point of Care) devices available that can do this. Likely this was the A1CNOW device, but there are probably one or two others out there.

There are also POC devices that can do various other tests including lipid panels... it's very interesting (albeit expensive - a test strip for the A1CNOW device runs ~$13 a test, and the lipid panels run more like $40 each).

Anyways, congratulations on the good news. You maybe went in a month early, as you should have the a1c done every 3 months or so, but for 2 months in your numbers are doing great - really shows that you've taken control of this. Feel good, and keep on keepin' on.

    Great job!
  • Some of these things take time. Right now it looks good, but don't be disappointed if it takes longer than you expect. Remember that once you get your A1c down below 7 you're not done, you have to keep it there.
