Food Scale: Recommendations, Weighing, Logging, Tips, Tricks, Advice

I'm giving in... and finally buying a food scale. Although my loose clothes tell me I'm obviously doing something right, I think this would move along a tiny bit faster if I just gave in and started weighing everything instead of eyeballing and using measuring cups.

So, how do I do it?
Meats, veggies and such solids seem easy. But mayo, sourcream, I have to put each in a container and then dump it into my food? Or do I put my plate on the scale and every time I add something jot down how much it increased? Is the scale that sensitive?

Please share your best tips and tricks!!!! (And recommendations for a food scale brand, model or type)

    Cris;

    Smart move.

Here's my choice but there are plenty of others to chose from in this price range.

    Two things you definitely want,
    Tare function
    Ounce/gram readings

Tare lets you "zero out" whatever is already on the scale (dish, dish with one food, etc), so as you add items to the plate, one by one you get the direct reading of just that item,

Oz/g switch gives you weight in either unit which comes in handy when some ingredients in the database only have one or the other.

We use both features pretty much every day.
  • with mayo I put the jar on the scale and switch my scale on. The scale shows 0. When I take some mayo from the jar the scale shows - 20g for example. So I had 20 g of mayo

I swear by this scale. It has never failed me and it is so easy to use. 4 settings (oz, kg, g and lbs) makes it so easy to measure everything.

For liquidy things I measure the empty container, then measure the container with the food, and subtract the weight of the container from the weight of the container and food.

I have this one. A little more pricey but I love the large surface and high capacity. I can plop a hot pot of soup on there and be good.

No problemo! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I am finding it a great help in my fat-bomb making. Lemon and choco-almond in the freezer, whee

l have a SOENHLE scale which is pretty accurate. Only when I try to add 1g it can have trouble register. But then I guess we're down to professional dope dealer accuracy :p

It got Red Dot award for good design. Here are some of their selection.

For liquids or powders I have 2 sets of IKEA measuring spoons, the 5 ml teaspoon and 15 ml tbs make all the measuring onto the scale effortless :)
