Hello, I'm Shrada from Nepal, i'm 18 and it's been about 4 years since i've known that I have hypothyroidism and before I really didn't care about being healthy and losing weight but now I've realised that I really need to become fit. It's been about 9 days since I started using MFP, and I lost 2 lbs and again gained it back as i'm a binger, and so now I just am joining few groups to get motivated and be able to relate to people going through the same thing and change my lifestyle.

  • Hi Shrada -- I share your situation being diagnosed at least 17 years ago. Still on Meds but have been researching natural alternatives as well, in particular, Kelp. Perhaps we can journey together.

Deprivation can lead to bingeing. Set your goal appropriately—.5 lbs. per week for each 25 lbs. you need to lose. Eat "good" 80% of the time, and fit yummy, portion-controlled treats into your calorie goal.

Thyroid meds reduce the fatigue, so I can be more active. But what helped me lose weight was learning to log everything I eat & drink accurately & honestly. Logging works.

You need to break the binge/shame cycle. If you binge, log it accurately & honestly. Then forgive yourself & move on. Look at your calories for the past 7 days—it's easier in the app.

According to the Mayo Clinic http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hypothyroidism/expert-answers/hypothyroidism-diet/faq-20058554

"Although claims about hypothyroidism diets abound, there's no evidence that eating or avoiding certain foods will improve thyroid function in people with hypothyroidism."

I think the one exception to hypothyroid diets are if you have an autoimmune based hypothyroid issue like Hashimoto's - -which is the most common hypo condition out there. If you do have that, then you likely do have some foods which trigger the autoimmune response. People have to figure it out for themselves, but sometimes starting something like a strict Paleo diet can really help and then slowly add back in things one at a time to see how you react to them. Common culprits for many are gluten (wheat/grains), casein and lactose (both in dairy) and certain cruciferous vegetables.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2012. I lost the weight & have maintained for six months by eating anything I want. I lost just like everybody else—by eating fewer calories than I burn.

You do realize that not everyone is you, right? That not everyone has your problems, advantages and disadvantages, right? That it may require something different for someone else...
