Happy Sunday Folks! Today is heavy lift day, going to start a 5X5 routine for dead lifts, bench press, Zercher Squats, Seated Overhead press, and Compound Rows. Will let ya know how it goes.

Looking forward to the New Year.

Heron, Not many things better than the smell of gunpowder in the morning and hearing the crunch of dead clay under your feet.

TJ Good stuff on your runs, are you wrapping or using a brace with your knees ? Do you incorporate sprints days into your training plan?

Yepper Mac n Cheese is a def treat, add Spam for a big dose of me boyish grin and chili mac is ambrosia!

Have a great day Folks almost there!

  • Oops, new weekly check in thread. I followed Carol on the other one. :)

It's Sunday folks. Weigh in and vlog day for me. Wonder what the results will be...

Oops me too! On correct thread now.

Chris: your runs sound amazing. I have really tried to be a runner with no luck. Just hate it. I would love the alone time and the feeling of moving that way for sustained periods of time. It's amazing that you don't feel tired! I love the idea of getting through the books on your long runs. Reading for pleasure is a luxury I don't have lately. I will check out audible.com and steal your idea for the walking I'm planning to start doing more of!

John, I don't actually run, unless I'm being chased or chasing something! I have asthma that only really acts up when I try to run. Because of this, I can walk a mile faster then I can run one. When I "ran" a mile last, it took me around 18 minutes, but I can consistently walk one at around 14 minutes, because I don't get winded.

Well geez, the second I posted in the other I thought, hmmm, shouldn't there be a new thread...oh well here's what I wrote
Sunday. Beautiful sunny day here today. Took advantage of it to go for a nice longish walk (3.5miles) even is it was like 33F outside. Hey, its above freezing.

Listened to John and Carol on the podcast while I walked. Great job guys!

My Bad TJ (bit of early AM fog) comment was for Chris but I would ask you if you have tried a 'sprint walk' short bust as fast as you can go (for 10-20 sec) with out changing stride. You walking times are very good sub 15 mins is a really good time. there are some very good metabolic effects from the 'sprint' mode. and sprint is a relative term so intense faster pace than normal, but not necessarily a run. With Asthma may still be problematic, but might consider it as an experiment. I use a Tabata Timer App on my iphone and do 8 intervals of 20 sec max effort,10 sec ease up, about once a week during a mile or a mile and a half walk. That's steps it up a bit but not over stressful on my knees.

Gorgeous sunny day in California perfect day for sporting clay. It's my first time, I sucked but I had a blast. Plan on doing it again. also got a lot of walking in. Didn't get to try all 18 stations. The ones that goes straight up is hard for me. I like some of the rabbits.
Shot a few different shotguns so that's always fun! Tactical shotguns are fun to shoot.

Hey all! I still need to catch up on last week's thread. Good going John on your workout. I did some rowing, treadmill and strength training.

I used to be a non-runner. TJ, I am a fellow asthma sufferer. That was a huge reason why I didn't do it. In school I was okay with short distances. I work with it now and somehow can usually push myself past that wall. When I started I had to hit the rescue inhaler. Now, I usually only have an attack once I stop. Strange, but true, and I have to ease myself through it. Worst attacks happen for me in the basement because of molds or winter runs on too cold days. I am forever cleaning corners down there and always wear a Buff outside.

John, I have a GymBoss timer and love it! Helped me when I started, as well as a metronome. I think the metronome was more about not hearing me struggle to breath. Focused on it. Now I use the timer for plyo. Best darn thing:)

I say all of this and it sounds like I might be a "real" runner, but the truth is I still struggle. My body does not like it. I have never had the great effortless run. Sometimes the trails make my brain escape. It is more of a great challenge and every time I am doing it and done, I am shocked to had completed it. Just had the best dream of me being an endurance runner. I was racing up and down mountains without effort and I swear I was flying. Then I woke up! haha

Fighting a headache for two days. Damn sinuses and this crazy weather. Have taken numerous naps and was mega-cranky today. It will pass when it gets colder.

    Have a great week everyone!

John, I've never really tried to do a specific interval, but I have cranked up the speed on the treadmill a few times, just to see. It was like a steady jog, and it didn't seem to kill me like full on running. I still wouldn't want to do it too regularly, but maybe after I get back up and moving, it'll get easier.

Heron, that's one thing I really want to try! I've shot clays informally, but I'd love to do it in a competition setting.

Kris, I never even really have attacks. Unless I just don't know what an attack is. It's so infrequent that I don't even have an inhaler. I did have a few attacks at my old place. We had carpet, and I think it held the pet hair too much, so I would have trouble breathing, occasionally. It also doesn't help that I'm mildly allergic to dogs and really allergic to rodents, so 2 dogs and 2 pet rats with carpet kinda sucked. I bought one one those OTC vaporizers and it helped me tremendously. I haven't needed it but maybe once, since we left the place with carpet.

John, I don't wrap as it doesn't really help. The disease I have is caused by the tendon in my knee between my knee cap and tibia being too short which causes the tibia bone to grow outwards. It gets really inflamed from repetition use such as running. I have actually been in a lot of pain since yesterday and have been icing it 15 on 15 off for a while. Starting to feel a bit better for my run tomorrow.

Carol, the audible account is totally worth it. You can get pretty lost in a book and forget you're even exercising!

End of the weekend ... back to work tomorrow :( Also, three more days to the end of the challenge! :)
  • Heron, sounds like you had a great time. I've never shot clays and my one experience with a shotgun didn't end well (I was 11 and didn't shoot a gun again until I was 18 and then again until I was 44). I have a hard enough time hitting stationary paper! Hehehe...

It's Monday everybody. I hope everybody has a wonderful day.
  • John, thank you for watching the vlog.

Kris, sorry to hear you're dealing with sinus issues. I bought a diffuser/vaporizer recently to diffuse lavender oil to help me sleep (seems to be helping some). I have been using peppermint oil to help with headaches recently (breathing it as well as putting some on the temples). It helps and smells awfully good as well. :) Hope you feel better soon.

Happy Monday Folks! Hope all is well with all of you. The DOMS have rolled in pretty heavy overnight, so very stiff this morning, never the less a good sore.

Kris - Hope you break that headache cycle.

Well we're nearly to the top of Hill 2014. the Military labels hills by the elevation of the summit above sea level. That means our next objective will be a little bit higher Hill 2015 awaits in the mist. just a bit further, a bit higher than the one we are on now. The Battle of Hill 2014 has given us a lighter load to carry during the coming campaign. We are stronger, we are wiser, and we are even more determined to get to the top of Wellness Ridge one hill at a time. We've got about 72 hrs to break in place before we get the new OPORDER, so enjoy it; check you battle buddies and resupply ammo and gear as needed.

Thanks Jen and John. Also thanks for the sinus tips. I am happy to report that the headache is gone. Just what I thought...the temp dropped and it helped. Sunny and chilly now:)

    Congrats on PaleoFX Kim:)

Happy Monday! I pretty much ate whatever sounded good for the last half of the week. I weighed this morning, couple of pounds heavier but hopefully some of that is water weight and will go away quickly.

Also to answer your other question John, I don't do sprint training right now because my goals aren't to increase my times. I'm purely training for lengthening my distance out to 13-14 miles so I have a base to work with. I'll incorporate sprints when I work on my speed. That being said, I do intervals and fartleks so I do 40% - 80% - 40% - 80% runs twice a week.

Eating pretty well all day then I fall apart at night. Gained several pounds even though I'm not going crazy with carbs or volume. Just a few parties where I had the dessert. Now I'm only 9 pounds away from my all time heaviest.
I really want to do a juice fast to knock down some water weight!
Going to keep it together for a few more days & then hoping the challenges are the key. Water, clean eating & daily activity. If that doesn't do it I'm for sure hitting the juicer in February!!!!

Darn, you had to go and share that. Just kidding. Love the site and there is a pair of snow pants I have had my eye on for awhile and I see they have them. i shouldn't, but they are too cute:)
  • Only a couple more days until we can escape this target rich environment. New Year's Eve may be problematic. Also, New Year's day as it is my wife's birthday. I must hang tough.
  • Now there is an idea. Maybe I should carry around some freshly fired shotgun shells to sniff on. The smell of fresh double a might get rid of the smells coming out of the kitchen

Carol, I'm listening to John's episode, and something you said reminded me of two of the things on the Whole 30 rules.

The first thing I thought of was:
You never, ever, ever have to eat anything you don’t want to eat. You’re all big boys and girls. Toughen up. Learn to say no (or make your mom proud and say, “No, thank you”). Learn to stick up for yourself. Just because it’s your sister’s birthday, or your best friend’s wedding, or your company picnic does not mean you have to eat anything. It’s always a choice, and we would hope that you stopped succumbing to peer pressure in 7th grade.
I read this to my wife, and her response was just "Oh..." Like, crap... can't argue that.

    The other was:
It is not hard. Don’t you dare tell us this is hard. Beating cancer is hard. Birthing a baby is hard. Losing a parent is hard. Drinking your coffee black. Is. Not. Hard.

Jonny, that's a good idea. Just a good wiff should get you in a zen mood!

    TJ,
If this is "easy" we'd all be at our ideal weight. Lol
what's "hard" for one might not be hard for another. I do get what you are saying by drawing very extreme examples. And you make a good point.
For example for me "hard" is turning down chocolate. Sparring in the ring is not hard for me. Fun and challenging yes, hard? no!
