My favourite little tactic in kickboxing is to step in and instead of the traditional jab and cross combination which everyone is taught and expects I try to apply a little of my Wing Tsun stuff.
Instead of jabbing, I'll trap their hand, usually their leading hand against their body as best as possible, while immediately following up with a cross punch.
Basic idea is to forego the jab in an attempt to disrupt their guard against the real threat, the right fist0 -
I'm on a tablet and far too lazy to put in actual pictures but I really need to work on my back kick!0

White rank KAJUKENBO/WHKD sparring.
So, in this art, I am expected to feel out what is natural to sparring, do what works for me. I haven't been taught a block or ways to protect my head.
I've been doing a lot of light sparring with basically with higher ranks.
To get around the technical level of things they know and things I think I know or have been trained in prior to showing up?
I practice a mix of elbow shields (grab the back of your neck and lean away), peekaboo boxing (this one you should be familiar with I think), and crazy monkey head defense or pensador/thinking man defense and its follow up pensataq, thinking man attack (this is from JKD/NUDDA/FMA/KFM and Defence Lab).
So far? Its working! Kicks to the head, straight punches to the head, hooks to the head, I've suffered no ill effects or dazing from head strikes. I will say, I do get a lot of looks and comments from those I've sparred with, but its been pretty good natured and questions on why I do what I do.
From there?
Officially, I'm working on interceptions/ stop strikes and kicks/parries for WHKD.
Ground defense for Judo.
Escape Guard for BJJ.
And basic punches and footwork for Boxing.
Haven't delved into Tai Chi and Wrestling yet.0 -
I'm all about my roundhouse kicks. I just feel the most power in them. However, I really love testing my ability with all my kicks and seeing how high I can go and how much I can open up my hips and how fast I can get back to my stance.0

We have been doing many spinning techniques, I was very awkward and uncomfortable and am now getting so I feel OK spinning.0

Ju Jitsu: strong - I've been told several times that I have a very strong Tai Otoshi
weak - My grappling has suffered, so I'm working on that again.
Hapkido: strong - Spin heel kick, jumping turning outside, snap kick, Cho kum sa mak sul
weak - I'm still working on memorizing and improving my purple belt self defense.0 -
I have to say my favorite and go to opening combo is a simple kizami tsuki,(jab), gyaku tzuki,( cross), mewashigeri( round kick) and escape with a kizami tsuki. Just a simple meat and potatoes combo.it works well to set up that round kick, they are focused on the cross. but it usually only work once or twice, they catch on lol.0

I am continually working on side kicks, both thrust and snap, I am pretty happy with my thrust from a front zenkutsudachi and kiba dachi, but my snap could be faster.

Good for you! I see so many bad back kicks..it irks the hell out of me. Even people with advanced training seem to do it incorrectly...0 -

Brown Belts in Judo and Jiu Jitsu
I stopped Tournament fighting in 1986. Stopped teaching in 1987. At that time, my spinning back kick was my most effective weapon.
I have a dojo in my home and still practice kata (forms) and technique, although how effective I might be at this advanced age is something I haven't recently put to the test. With any luck and a little discretion, I hope to avoid testing my abilities against an opponent in the future.0 -
Jujitsu - My Soto Momo Harai and Uchi Momo Harai are pretty good
My ground game needs work, although my arm bars are pretty good
Muay Thai - Knees and elbows all the way
Bare Knuckle Boxing - My body shots are killer, especially my left
My knife fighting skills are good, need some work on the karambit though
Filipino stick fighting needs work as well0 -
ah good topic.
I have a couple of short 'go to' combinations I always use when I feel like I need to land something. They are simple, but work. I'm orthodox if that helps visualize.
1) Jab, cross, right roundhouse kick to the head. This works for a couple reasons. The jab backs them up, the cross is in their face and they can't see the roundhouse coming from the same side as the cross. Also, people in kickboxing 'seem' to be taught to trow from opposite sides so they aren't used to same side combinations and maybe have a harder time defending against.
2) Left hook (my best punch) followed by right roundhouse kick. The trick here is footwork. As you throw the hook, step with the left foot moving past your opponent, open the hip to set up the kick.
3) Right step knee, short right hook. Well, in technique, we are never taught to throw a right hook. Maybe an overhand right. But because the step knee closes the distance so effectively, the short right hook is all you can really do. It's a beauty because as you throw the knee, most people will lower their guard, hence the opening for the little hook.
These simple things work for me.
Something I'm working on, and threw last night in kickboxing sparring
Rear cross on kick retraction. See this video at about 1:20. It's a pretty flashy move

2015 Kendo goal: practice and improve nitoryu.
I have been practicing kendo for almost 7 years. Last summer I started to practice nitoryu, two sword style. I trained hard over the summer and sprained the tendons at my right elbow. The injury continues to nag me because I continue to practice and workout, but it seems to be healed enough that I can return to practicing nito.
Here is a (poor angled) video of me practicing nito last fall:

Here I am fighting using nito for the first time in a tournament:
