First Cold Since Diagnosed

Options
So I have my first cold since I was diagnosed in July. I did not think to ask my endo what cold medications I could use in July. I am wondering what some of the more experienced T2 use when they get sick. Thanks in advance.

Well ... just having a cold will likely increase your blood sugar readings.

Stay away from anything that has sugar or alcohol in it. But if you want to use losenges, try the sugar-free ones.

Your doctor's office or nurse, or your health insurance nurse line can probably advise you better than we can ... because our own situations are probably more unique to ourselves; however ... this is what I do. Note, I have hypertension so am limited on the OTC medications I can use as many of them raise blood pressure.

For stuffiness and congestion ... Mucinex, netti-pot, steamy shower, lots of hot herbal and green tea, a vaporizer or steaming water on the stove to raise the humidity around me. Water, water, water.

For aches and pains ... aspercream rub-on, an occasional NSAID like aspirin, tylenol, ibuprofen, or something else my doctor previously approved.

For sore throat ... salt-water gargle, warm tea, soup broth, water, water, water.

For runny nose ... Puffs tissues ... and a light smear of vicks vapor-rub over the bridge of my nose where the tissue rubs it raw.

I swear by Vicks vapor-rub and keep it in the house especially for when I don't feel well, I rub it on my cold feet, rub it on my chest, and, as stated above, use it to make my nose feel better ...just don't put it inside your nose.

If I could, I would take something like an Alkaseltzer, but I cannot.

    Also .... lots of sleep.

Thanks NK1112. I am doing the netti-pot and vicks. My throat lozenges are sugar free Fisherman's Friend in Mint. I usually use the HBP Coricidin when sick but have not here at home. I am going out soon so I hope that ends up be sugar/sugar alcohol free. Thanks again.

Here are a couple of articles that may help. I prefer properly researched advice to blog responses that may or may not be correct. Google can be your best friend

Another good step is to consult your pharmacist. He/she can direct you to OTC products that will have less impact on the T2. Toni
