10 Benefits to Drinking Warm Lemon Water Every Morning:

There are many health benefits of lemons that have been known for centuries. The two biggest are lemons’ strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and their use as a weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Lemons contain many substances–notably citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene–that promote immunity and fight infection.

HOW TO DO IT: You should be using purified water and it should be lukewarm not scalding hot. You want to avoid ice cold water, since that can be a lot for your body to process and it takes more energy to process ice cold water than the warm. Always use fresh lemons, organic if possible, never bottled lemon juice. Squeeze 1/2 a lemon with each glass and drink it down first thing before you eat a single thing, or workout, etc.

1) Aids Digestion. Lemon juice flushes out unwanted materials and toxins from the body. It’s atomic composition is similar to saliva and the hydrochloric acid of digestive juices. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that is required for digestion. Lemons are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract. The digestive qualities of lemon juice help to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating. The American Cancer Society actually recommends offering warm lemon water to cancer sufferers to help stimulate bowel movements.

2) Cleanses Your System / is a Diuretic. Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials in part because lemons increase the rate of urination in the body. Therefore toxins are released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy. The citric acid in lemons helps maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.

3) Boosts Your Immune System. Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds. They’re high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) found in lemons demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects, and is used as complementary support for asthma and other respiratory symptoms plus it enhances iron absorption in the body; iron plays an important role in immune function. Lemons also contain saponins, which show antimicrobial properties that may help keep cold and flu at bay. Lemons also reduce the amount of phlegm produced by the body.

4) Balances pH Levels. Lemons are one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. Sure, they are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline (the citric acid does not create acidity in the body once metabolized). Lemons contain both citric and ascorbic acid, weak acids easily metabolized from the body allowing the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the blood. Disease states only occur when the body pH is acidic. Drinking lemon water regularly can help to remove overall acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints, which is one of the primary causes of pain and inflammation.

5) Clears Skin. The vitamin C component as well as other antioxidants helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes and it helps to combat free radical damage. Vitamin C is vital for healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne. It can actually be applied directly to scars or age spots to help reduce their appearance. Since lemon water purges toxins from your blood, it would also be helping to keep your skin clear of blemishes from the inside out. The vitamin C contained in the lemon rejuvenates the skin from within your body.

6) Energizes You and Enhances Your Mood. The energy a human receives from food comes from the atoms and molecules in your food. A reaction occurs when the positive charged ions from food enter the digestive tract and interact with the negative charged enzymes. Lemon is one of the few foods that contain more negative charged ions, providing your body with more energy when it enters the digestive tract. The scent of lemon also has mood enhancing and energizing properties. The smell of lemon juice can brighten your mood and help clear your mind. Lemon can also help reduce anxiety and depression.

7) Promotes Healing. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), found in abundance in lemons, promotes wound healing, and is an essential nutrient in the maintenance of healthy bones, connective tissue, and cartilage. As noted previously, vitamin C also displays anti-inflammatory properties. Combined, vitamin C is an essential nutrient in the maintenance of good health and recovery from stress and injury.

8) Freshens Breath. Besides fresher breath, lemons have been known to help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. Be aware that citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so you should be mindful of this. Do not brush your teeth just after drinking your lemon water. It is best to brush your teeth first, then drink your lemon water, or wait a significant amount of time after to brush your teeth. Additionally, you can rinse your mouth with purified water after you finish your lemon water.

9) Hydrates Your Lymph System. Warm water and lemon juice supports the immune system by hydrating and replacing fluids lost by your body. When your body is deprived of water, you can definitely feel the side effects, which include: feeling tired, sluggish, decreased immune function, constipation, lack of energy, low/high blood pressure, lack of sleep, lack of mental clarity and feeling stressed, just to name a few.

10) Aids in Weight Loss. Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. Studies have shown people who maintain a more alkaline diet, do in fact lose weight faster. You may find yourself making better choices throughout the day, if you start your day off right, by making a health conscious choice to drink warm lemon water first thing every morning.

HIGH PROTEIN. Protein really makes you feel full way longer than carbs. I keep a variety of foods in glass bowls with rubbery lids. (rice, couscous, chopped up roasted chicken, the leftover ham from Christmas, mixed veggies, and a can of deluxe mixed nuts.) For lunch and dinner I mix a few of these up, nuke them, sprinkle Tamari sauce on it, and enjoy. Like tonight I had 1 c. couscous with 1 oz. ham, 1 c. veggies and a Tbs of the nuts. It's very good and super easy. That was hours ago and I still feel full. GOOD LUCK!

Best thing I did when I was starting out was buy a food scale. You don't realize what an actual portion is until you weigh it. Really helped getting my food intake correct!!

What worked for me was to eat what I liked. A lot of women around me went on crazy *kitten* diets where they were gulping down shakes or eating egg white in the morning to loose weight. I always knew I could not lose weight like that.
When I first lost weight (7 years ago) I went down from 92 to 77 kg in 6 months time by just eating what I liked. Of course I did not eat chocolate or cookies or crisps anymore. But I kept my kellogs K light in the morning, my sandwich in the afternoon and my dinner (African food, my hubby cooks for me), the same. I replaced the portions (went from 100grams kellogs to 60 and halved the amount of milk) or I cut the sizes (2 cups of rice instead of a plate full). I found this way I could still eat what I liked and once you get used to the hunger feeling, you don't even feel it anymore.
I also managed to stay this way till after my 2nd son, then I was 87, now 80 and on my way down.
Haven't ever been below 75 since I left the house 14 years ago but am defo giving it a try :)

I so agree about not doing the "diets". This for me is about lifestyle change. A diet is short term. I still eat pizza, just not all the time, and I watch portions. I cook more, eat out less and exercise. I know I can continue this the rest of my life and be healthy.

Great Tips. Thanks! I agree with cutting and preparing healthy things ahead as well as logging. I bought a journal. I like logging online, but then I tend to do 20 other things online, so it is better if I just jot it down.

For me it always helps to eat in certain places only. This might sound strange, but it works for me.
I don't eat in front of the TV or on the couch,
I don't eat at my desk where I am working a lot, I don't eat in the car. Instead I eat at the dinner table or at my place in the staff room at work.
It helps me a lot not ti THINK of eating.
    :)

When I go out to eat at a buffet; I take a dinner plate to the salad bar, and a salad plate for the entree. For dessert I have some fruit from the salad bar. Then sit at a table as far away from the food as I can get, with my back to the food bar. :D

The thing that has helped me the most with not snacking while I watch tv is herbal tea. I buy lots of tasty flavours and every time I want to snack while I'm sitting on the couch, I just brew a pot instead.

Plan ahead! Know where your challenges are, I am heading for a long weekend with the hubby and friends, I am planning on doing some of the cooking while we are away to make logging easier, I will be eating simple foods so I can be as accurate as possible, and I will be as ACTIVE as I can be (were at the beach!) so I won't lose any ground. I will not let a fun weekend derail my 2015 goals!! Just remember - nothing tastes as good as skinny feels!

    - lwdllc: I could not agree more. Even just on a daily basis: every morning I enter into MFP what I PLAN to eat as well as my PLANNED exercise. I take a look at whether or not that will allow me to meet my goals for the day and, if not, I need to either be OK with that or eliminate/reduce portions. This allows me to know what I need to do to be successful for the day - it represents my commitment for the day and it goes a long way to ensuring I stay on track. At the end of the day, I make any changes to reflect what I actually did and close off for the day. While it's good to log your eating and exercise at the end of the day, at that point it's all after-the-fact, the damage has already been done.

That is SO True. I find entering early really helps me stay on track as well, its a great motivator for me to stay on track and I am FAR less likely to find myself staring into the fridge fighting off the urges to snack! I plan my food and then let my exercise be a bonus - maybe it can earn me a more generous portion or an adult beverage! I have a RULE of if I might like a glass of wine in the evening I MUST have walked a MIN of 3 miles that day, otherwise too bad so sad.

If you aren't one who plans meals (like myself) and you are trying to decide what to eat, a tool that helps me is entering my choices into MFP and going from there. You're much more likely to make the "right" choice when you can see it in front of you. I try not to drink my calories - that's the fastest way to go over my calorie limit for the day.
