Hurricane season is a real season Jen! Not as nice as Spring but I taught it to my 4th graders.0
-
We live enough inland that we don't end up in the Gulf. We just have hurricane parties where you sit on the porch and drink while the lights are out. And Grill all your frozen meat, so it won't waste.0
-
I'll keep blizzard season. I thought I was going to have to go through a hurricane when I was in school at Keesler AFB in 87. Thankfully, I didn't.0

Where's Keesler?0

Happy Friday morning everybody.
Carol, Kim & TJ, it's FB challenge weigh in day and I feel good about it. Fingers crossed. Either way though, it's been a great week.
Looks like I won't be jaunting today with wind chills in the -20s. Tomorrow looks like it should be doable.
Off to weigh in and submit the results.
Happy Friday!!!0 -
Happy Friday All!
No thank you to hurricanes. I remember vacationing on Cape Cod and it was hit by the tail end of one and it was scary. Not even close to being "in" a hurricane. There was a yacht club next to the condos and woke up the next morning and looked out the window to find boats up on the beach and piled on top of one another at the club. I can only imagine how scary it is in your parts. Devastating:(
Did two treadmill miles, StrongLifts 5x5 and rowing last night. More to come this weekend.
Kim, Yes, it is getting tougher as the weight goes up. I need a rack for safety which means I will need to hit the gym to do it. Think before long I may have a day where I can't go up on some weight. We'll see.
Jen, Go get that weigh-in girl! You are doing great.
We have a pile of snow this morning and it is cold. brrrr Went out early to clean the boyfriend's car off and I am still chilled. Be careful out there all!0 -
Happy Friday Folks! Hope all is well with all of you.
Go get em Jen! You gonna jam on the weigh in. good call on keepin it safe for the jaunt.
Yepper Hurricane season is def a season. (Jun1-Nov 1)Savannah is blessed from the standpoint that it is naturally Sheltered (its the western most point of the east coast).
Looks like folks are doing well. For those on the Whole 30 if you're still with it; congrats the hardest part is behind you; cravings should be easing this week. If you were already eating pretty clean going in, you should start feeling some head clarity about now. Brain seems to be working better, hunger feels much more under control. Another couple days and it will feel like your brain is on rocket fuel. Great days are just around the corner keep hangin in there.
Meetings went long yesterday so I ended up doing an unplanned 24 hr fast. What I found interesting was I had some significant hunger about the time I realized I wasn't going ot have time to get my planned for meal in, but after about 20 mins it went away and I was fine for the next 4 hrs, and when I had time eat, I felt like I could have gone much longer on the fast. So I feel a 48 hr fast is probably pretty doable for me and plan to try it in a couple weeks and see how it goes. BTW the end result of the fast is my Fasted morning Blood Glucose was below 100 today, that is a win as it has been a mystery to me that my 0500 daily reading is usually 105-125 that gets below 100 usually by 7 or 8 am and is usually low 80;s by bedtime. . Creating an Hb1Ac of 6.0 on my last tests. Will be an interesting n=1 to see haw many days it has that effect. and then to see if a longer fast amplifies it.
Have a great day Folks and Remember Fridays are RED OP days.

Progress!!!! Yes! Suppose I'm not really doing the whole30 because I weighed myself today for the other challenge. But I'll just have to come revoke my card.
Anyway I had a good weigh-on & this group is a big part of my motivation so thank you!
John it's funny you mention that I was just thinking that I'm not as hungry as I used to be. That alone is worth all the time and effort. Thanks for all your knowledge and encouragement John!0 -
Morning all, well all these workout reports are making me feel inadequate!. I guess that's kinda the point, peer pressure. So seeing as my weight is at its lowest in 20 years, I feel the need to tone/strengthen my arms and legs plus I would really like to tighten up the mid section. I have always had a 'gut' of varying sizes through he years even when I was in the military. I own a treadmill and a Crossbow workout machine. With or without utilizing these items, I need some good, high quality exercises to help obtain these goals, suggestions?0
-
Mark, I only have suggestion for the treadmill. If you can, don't just walk or run on it. Instead do Tabata. Sprint I mean like you are chase by a pride of lion for 20 sec then rest for 10. It's much more effective then regular running and you only need to do a minimal of 4min to get the benefits. Here's an article http://www.muscleandfitness.com/workouts/workout-routines/4-minute-fat-burning-high-intensity-workout
Or check out fitness blender they have free workout videos on tabata/HIIT
John, that's some interesting data. Good luck on the 48hr fast.
Kris, great workout!
Jennifer, just curious, why are you cutting down on meat?
Carol, didn't know that there are that many rules in the whole30 but I say you are still in the program if you are following the diet guideline. I do get the no weighing concept since the whole idea (from what I can gleen) is about wellness.0 -
I am still doing the IF and ULC, so far I don't find it difficult. In fact I kinda like it. By doing IF, I find that my macros falls naturally to my preferred ratio and I stay lower on my calorie intake. So all in all that's good. We'll see if I can sustain this during starting spring since I will be a little more active.
I'm gonna try to go to training today.0 -
Jen, that's like the Gulf Costiest of the Gulf Coast!
Kris & Jen, It's not so bad where I'm at, being a pretty good ways inland. We do get plenty of rain and wind, but by the time it's here, it's lost most of its strength. The biggest threat is weak trees that will fall on your roof. We've been lucky to never have anything hit any of our homes, but it's surely a possibility.
John, thanks for the encouragement. I do tend to be hungry a little closer to quttin' time, than I used to. (rather that 3 hours before) I can say that when I was doing IF somewhat consistently, with a 16-8 schedule for a couple of weeks, I did notice the same thing. I'd usually break my fast (huh, break-fast. I guess that's where it comes from) at noon. I would get pretty hungry around 9:30 or 10, then it would go away about 20 minutes later. After that, sometimes I wouldn't be hungry until at least 12:30 or 1, but I'd make myself eat, so I didn't end up eating too late. I think my second month of our FB challenge, I'll sustain my Whole30 foods, but try IF out again.0 -
Heron, if I ran like I was running from lions, it would take me way longer to catch my breath than 10 seconds!0
-
For my Jaunt update, I was only able to get one mile in, yesterday.
I didn't weigh myself this morning, but I DID almost get my belt into its second tighter notch, this week! I started this year on 4, and now I'm on 5, close to 6! I'm so excited.
This morning, at work, I had to pass the break room on my way in. I thought someone had a plate of brownies out, but when I got a little closer, it turned out to be sausage! I ate some, figuring with all the sportsmen, it was probably deer or wild hog. It turned out to be jalapeno deer sausage, and was awesome! Then, my dept manager brought in donuts, and another co-worker brought in a bacon-maple king cake. My response to both was "okay, thanks" with a smile, and I turned back to my computer.

LOL TJ Nah, the adrenaline would have kick in.
I don't know if you've experience this in working out, but have you ever pushed yourself so hard that you thought you are are about to collapse, then suddenly you get that "2nd wind" and you are at 100% again? That's the adrenaline kicking in. the body thinks we are in danger and release adrenaline.
"Before, during and after exercising, athletes experience an emotional euphoria known as "runner's high." An adrenaline rush triggers many responses throughout the body, including the release of neurotransmitters. Triggered by the cascade of events after an adrenaline rush, neurotransmitters called endorphins evoke an uplifting emotional response within the brain temporarily, and help fight off the ill effects of stress. Doctors prescribe exercise to combat depression and stress because of the emotional balance that adrenaline rushes provide."
Yay to brain chemistry!0 -
Thanks for the info. I have pushed through it before, but my asthma keeps me from really doing it. I think I've said it here before, but I can actually walk a mile faster than I can "run" one, due to my asthma. It's not awful, though. Only acts up when I try to run.0
-
Yes TJ I remember you saying that you have asthma. I don't know how serious your asthma is but I just want to give you my story..
I have asthma and when I was younger it was a lot worse. I was also a very active child, Traditional western medicine only treat the symptoms so I ended up being treated the Eastern way. I've also learned to manage and control my breathing so I don't have to reach for my inhaler. That came out of necessity, because of my lifestyle ,I don't always have my inhaler in hand. But boy do you learn fast when you have to do without an inhaler LOL
I will always have an endurance issue and even though that has improved over time,( even when I was a competing athlet, I just had to work twice as hard) I will never be 100% and that's perfectly fine!! I do my best and that's all there is.
Having asthma sucks, I get it, and Again, I don't know how severe your asthma but you are young so you have youth on your side and you can totally improve your condition!0 -
Heron, I'm trying to limit my meat intake to see if it's been part of some health issues I've had crop up over the past couple of years. I have yet to drop it completely and not sure if I will. I like fish and shellfish better anyway, so trying to focus on that. I have some friends who eat vegan who have given me some great meat alternatives. Just broadening my horizons, trying to be healthier and deal with health issues.
0 -
Awww Jen so sorry to hear that. Btw have you tried pastured meat? I'm not knocking vegetarians or vegan I think one should eat whatever makes them feel good. You want to be careful with fish and shellfish. Check out the country of origin I personally would stay away from any non North American or European countries. And when I do it seafood I only eat from the green list of the seafood watch. There's an app.0
-
So ladies are you as fed up with how women sizing is? Do men have that issue?
I don't care about being at a certain number but I want the sizing to be consistent. Right now I am a size 6-12 or a S-L lol. It just make online shopping a little challenging. Arggh
And yes this is such a "first world problem"0 -
Thanks Heron. I have eaten some grass fed/pastured beef in the past. One store used to carry it but that lasted about 3 months. Frustrating. I know some local farmers that sell it but most only sell it at farmers markets or at their farms. Fish is a touchy subject, I know. I'll admit, what I like the best is considered the worst seafood there is by some (because of toxins). The struggle to minimize the toxins is endless for sure. Thank you for the information and I'll check it out.
As for clothing sizes, don't get me started! I used to deal with issues between brands but now it's issues between the same pair of pants! Unfortunately I'm in 16-18 work right now. I pretty much can't online shop unless it's something I know fits me right or has an elastic waist (like maxi skirts).0 -
Heron, mine's not incredibly serious. So jot serious that sometimes I feel dumb even mentioning it, because I know it's not the worst it could be. My dad was regularly hospitalized as a child because of it, but he's grown out of it. I used to get "attacks" every few weeks, but a quick OTC breathing treatment would solve it. I'm hoping that losing weight and getting more fit will help reduce the effects, because it already seems to have helped from the first 20 or so LBS I lost.
Oh, and as for the clothes, no problems here. Except that it seems pockets are getting smaller, which is a pain for people that carry as much crap as I do! I do know what you mean, because I always here my wife's stories. From one store to the next, you could go from a size 2 to a size 8, it seems. The problem is that the number isn't based on a typing. 2 what? 10 what? At least with men's clothes, a 34-30 means that you've got a 34" waist and 30" inseam. I know they're way bigger numbers, and women might prefer to see the smaller number, but how the hell is it supposed to make you feel better, when you think you're a 6 and have to buy a 12?0 -
TJ, you need to try Deluth trading shirts. The pockets are huge.0

Chiming in on the runner's high...it's great. It cures all ails. Sometimes after a longer run I'll get home and feel ready to go again because of that after run revelry.
As for sizing, I run into that sometimes. It's all brand specific and whether or not it's a slim fit or traditional. Places like Express run super small but others like the Gap or anything at Dillard's runs really big...huge even. I wish there was a standard metric we could use to measure sizes...like inches. /sarcasm0 -
I keep trying to get Heron to buy men's clothes so matter what she'll always be the same size0
-
Hey all....some great discussion here.
Mark, I agree with Herons suggestion about doing sprints on the treadmill. And if you are going to walk in it do incline walking if your treadmill has that option. Don't worry as much about speed, keep trying to increase the angle of incline. It's better for your knees than running on it, gives a great cardio.
Not that I'm a real fan of cardio.....ESP if you are trying to firm up and get some muscle tone. Steady state cardio actually makes that worse, encourages your body to not gain muscle ( and even lose muscle, if you are in a deficit...because muscle is very inefficient in a cardio situation...your body will shed it over fat. I strongly encourage you to start doing some strength training.0 -
Well I am off kilter, got sick (just seasonal stuff, cold and congested) combined with not sleeping well and I felt like I got ran over. Planning to go on another 5-6 mile hike tomorrow.0

Happy Saturday Folks! Great day to be alive in our modern age. Listening to the Podcast on Youtube. Since I missed the first hour. Great to get to know more about you Kim and Kevin.
Folks the size conundrum is universal. Much more convoluted for gals. Zena would see a dress she liked try it on check the size put it back and never shop in the store again and restrict eating for a couple weeks because it was labeled as a 10 instead of a 6 and the reverse would be true as well same day, she could see a similar dress but it would be a 6 or a 4 and she'd be over the moon.
Got some jaunting and Jammin to do check with ya'all later0 -
TJ--missed responding earlier. I'm doing full body. I take progress pics irregularly anyways so this just gets me on a schedule. Last night I uploaded them all to my PC and was looking...March 2014 I seem to be my lowest BF%. It was when I was doing SealFit. It's cool to see how each program I've done affects my body. I'll do SealFit again when I'm healed. Dr appointment on Monday! Hopefully only a month or so before I can start putting weight on it again.0
