I'm back! Had a great cruise - did lots of snorkeling and diving in the ABC islands. Ate pretty well on the cruise, and still managed to gain 2 lbs. How does that happen?! I'm getting to catch up with the podcast. I really enjoyed listening to all the December winners. I'm dying to do one of those Run & Gun events. It sounds like a blast (pun intended)!

Back on the wagon with HFLC, with "low" being a relative term. I'm shooting for <50 grams but always end up with 75 - 100. It is carb from veggies, though. Cauliflower, spinach, cucumber, celery, etc. I don't have high carb veggies like potatoes or any grains. Frustrating...I'm not sure how to get it lower and still have enough veggies and fiber. So today was 76 gm carbs (of which 30 is fiber), 56 gm fat, 116 of protein. I feel good, but wish my jeans fit better. :\

Glad to be back in the conversation. Carol - you've logged in for 70 days. You rock! I remember well when we were in competition and neither of us ever made it past 20 days. :)

Hi all I am new to the group and things are going well I have been doing the slow carb diet for a little over a week now and have lost five pounds!

Welcome and sounds like you are off to a good start! Not sure I know what slow carb is, care to explain and tell us what you are doing?

Slow carb diet is Tim Ferris' four hour body plan, basically it is high protein, no grains which works well for me because I have a wheat allergy, no fruit but lots of vegetables, and legumes

Welcome to the Jam Side Lad!

Welcome Home Cynthia. I think we ought to get a gunrunners team going for next years Run and Gun with Kevin. That would be some Jam time for sure. What ya'll think?

Tom: welcome!! We are hearing a lot about the Tim Ferris success folks are having. Congrats on your loss!!

That is an awesome idea Hammer! I'd be up for that. I could put a run & gun out there & then I'd need to get my gun & up to speed to participate.

Oh Cynthia! I remember those days too! Yes, 70 day streak. It seems like it's taking too many days to get back to my jeans!!

Chris: keep us posted on those runs. I'm jealous of Mark's runs too!

Thursday night and just checking in. Usually weigh on Sunday mornings, but snuck a peek this morning, and found out that this pair of socks weighs 4 pounds. I guess I need to get off my butt and do more, something, anything? Tomorrow is Fasting Friday.

Ugh. Up a pound. I so much prefer a linear downward progression versus these bumps in the road. I told you guys I was feeling off. Oh well. And with perfect points in the challenge.

But in the good news department. I made 5x5 back squats at 100#. That was a big mental victory for me.

And allowing me to tell myself that since I lifted last night that pound is swole

So, what is this Run 'n Gun that you speak of? I thought I did that already in 3Gun?? Look up MGM Ironman, now there is run and gun. Video up on my channel from my 15yo running it last year. Carol, there is probably enough hardware between us that you would not have to buy a rifle, unless you wanted to.

For those that are asking, a picture from a few years ago. This is about 2/3 the way up, right before it goes to a 150yd 60% incline.

I love it! I'd better check my socks, too! Interesting Fasting Friday - tell us more about what you do/don't consume.

I do a partial fast on Mondays bit then eat a "clean" dinner. Lots of liquids during the day (water & tea mostly) and I have these stupid fiber wafers to take the edge off and keep the guts working (2 morning and 2 afternoon, and they taste like chocolate chalk). I used to do a full day fast Monday and then 1/2 day Tuesday, but decided I didn't really know why and it made my Tuesday lifting sessions too wonky. Honestly, I still don't really know why I do Mondays. I think maybe to shock my system back to reality after the weekend.

Anyone else out there do a full/partial fast? What about those 3-day cleanses Carol?

But in the good news department. I made 5x5 back squats at 100#. That was a big mental victory for me.

Is that 5 squats in 5 sets? How much time between sets? Slow down and up or normal speed? I'm at about the same point, but my trainer has me doing 3 sets of 8 - 10 at 110# with about 2 minutes in between. Not sure whether I should ask for more weight and fewer reps or just stick with this. On a squat machine I can easily do 135# for zillions of reps but that is pretty fake.

Strong legs, but weak arms. My bench hovers at 60# and I can't seem to budge it upwards.

    Cynthia,

I'm following a program called StrongLifts 5x5. Its a progressive strength building program around basic moves- Workout a is Squats, Bench Press and Barbell Rows Workout b is squats, overhead press and deadlifts. Designed for three workouts a week, alternating A & B All but deadlifts are done in 5 sets of 5 with 90 seconds to 3 minutes rest between. Deadlifts are a single set. You get warm up sets once you reach a certain weight load. The program adds 5 pounds per workout to all moves. In week4 and so far have progressed as described in all but Overhead press which is going slower - typically takes me two workouts to add the 5# for all 5 sets. Last night was a bump to 50#. Made the first set. Failed on the fifth lift of the second set. Did remaining sets at 45#. Benchpress I am progressing - was like you but stuck at 55. I'm at 65 now and it isn;t overly hard. I think I'm finally learning what to activate on the bench.

At first it is easy peasy, more form work than anything and I flew through the workout. Now it's getting challenging. I took the full three minutes between squat sets last night. I am getting to point that a spotter or a power rack would be helpful - probably more mentally than really needing.

I downloaded the iphone app for stronglifts. I love it. As it tracks my current weights, shows a timer for rest, remembers which workout I'm on, etc.

I like program because it is showing progression, is hard now while being somewhat minimal - 3 times a week, 3 moves. That said I've seen discussion in both the Carb Nite chat group and Kiefer's Super Humans in Training groups that even as minimal as it appears on first glance, it may be too metabolically demanding for folks on CarbNite or eating very /ultra low carb. So far I'm fine, but as weight increases I can see what they are saying. AJ has told me to keep her posted...it I get stuck or stop progressing she has some tips for me (we'll see what those are)

John, yes I want the marble to be lower for kneading. Actually if I can have a custom kitchen I want the counters to be higher. I'm not super tall 5'8 and change. But a higher counter would be so much more comfortable for me.

Kim. I was having that issue with my post being cut off when I use my phone. You have to click "done" before you hit "reply" I still copy my post before that anyways just in case.
Unfortunately I don't think I will be going to Paleo FX, Its much easier if Arturo go by himself. He can crash at his friend's place. If I go it'd be a whole thing lol. We either have to bring the dogs and find a dog friendly place which is not difficult or board the dogs.
However we will probably go to Vegas to support you guys at tough mudder

    Welcome Tom
Glad to see you back Cynthia. I think I've been on ULC for so long that 50g days seems like a small treat for me lol. For your veggies, the data could be wrong, there are so many choices for any food item. I tend to use the USDA version. For example if I type in spinach I'd type Spinach USDA. You'd have to eat A LOT of spinach to get for the carbs to matter. I'd watch out for the brocolli, cauliflower and kale, they just a tad higher in carbs. Try mushrooms or cabbage.
    . Your
Medically it has been proven that "cleanses"doesn't cleanses. The process of organs removing toxins won't be sped up by cleanses. What cleanses do is giving your body a
break from processing food. Its still a good thing. ;)

Kim congrats on your squats. Yeah women tend to have strong legs and weaker upper body.

    Carol, love the jammin sign!

Kevin, congrats on your loss and your training sounds so fun!

Alright, leaving for Tahoe in a bit. Yay!

Happy Saturday Folks! I get to work today, so can't make the Fitbit Weekend Challenge this weekend. Wouldn't be fair to the other competitors. The next weekend I can compete is Feb 6-7.

interesting HRV reading this morning 101.8 would have thought yesterdays workout would have moved the needle the other way. Gonna have to rethink the intensity I guess. This HRV is a great tool.

Been working on a modified Forerunner type stride in my walk sprints, finding I'm moving much farther in my 'sprints" over a the same tabata time, by making stride a bit shorter, foot fall more to center than heel, and I think my vibrams help with that as well. feels a lot more like a glide than a traditional sprint.

Well the beginning of day 8 tobacco free. Having a bit of a metabolic revolution going on these last few days. Body does not like this big of a change. But it will get used to it in the end just have to ride it out.

Have a great day Folks! Lots O fun in Tahoe Heron!
  • Happy Saturday everybody.

John, day 8. Congratulations. You'll get past this and your body will be grateful.

Lazy lazy Saturday morning. Laundry and reading. Barely have moved after sleeping in.

HRV good this am. 78. John- I'm surprised by your numbers, solely because I thought this was on a 100 point scale or range. My reading all in the 70s. And have stayed green as low as 45 ( with my old HM) But yellow once in the low 60s.

Just ate a nice brunch (on FB and instagram). About to go lift. Then jaunt with hubby. Then CarbNite!!! Today's plan PWO shake w/Carbshock. Frosted flakes with skim milk. Pizza/ breadsticks dinner. TalentI sorbet as final spike/ dessert. Just logged it all and pretty close to AJs assigned macros. If I just skipped morning coconut oil & HWC and did green tea instead would be perfect. But can't seem to get there. I love the creaminess of the coffee in the morning

Cynthia: I'm so over the juice fast. I just don't do them anymore. I'm not saying they're not a good thing, but I can't muster up the enthusiasm for it. The best thing I got out of those was it like Heron said, it was good to get a break from everything except nutrient rich foods.
I might be doing a partial fast on most days… I'm not sure. I stopped eating around 7 o'clock at night. And I don't eat lunch the next day until about one or 2 o'clock in the afternoon. So that's roughly an 18 hour fast which is what a lot of people who are intermittent fasting recommend. I just do it because I'm not a breakfast person. But now that I'm doing whole 30 it's resulting in very low calories. So I intentionally ate breakfast today and it's amazing how scrambled eggs & sausage add up to 500 cal so quickly!

John – your home gym looks sweet! And I'm still loving your run and gun pictures Kevin! I'm really looking forward to that next year!
Tom: you bring those knees and I'll bring my whining for everyone to slow down for me!

Heron, that's awesome that you guys are going to join us in Vegas.

Can't tell you guys how excited I am that folks in this group are actually going to get to hang out!
  • Carol, that was just too much fun tonight. Thank you again for having me on.

Food diary closed for the night and just cleaning up Facebook and YouTube before I go relax on the couch for a bit. I almost hit my 45 mile goal today - just a little under 4 to go!

Thank you everybody who has participated in the January Jaunt. You guys all kept me going and pushing myself (and today was a tough day). I'm rooting for all of you to hit your goal before the end of month.

Busy Saturday, but a good one. Ate a ton of bbq at a church function. Stayed on my eating plan forthe most part but had to have some sweet tea and tried a gluten free cupcake.
