possible TMI, but can we talk post partum cycles?

I didn't have to worry about dealing with my period for 49 glorious months during two pregnancies and two stints of breastfeeding (my cycle didn't return at all until we weaned each time). Now I'm back in the thick of this mess, and I feel lost! Thank goodness I don't have the debilitating cramps I used to get in my youth, but I'm still very much struggling with food. I want all the carbs and chocolate! How do you deal with food cravings and aversions (to anything healthy, haha!) during this? I can't let this week ruin my momentum!

Love your sense of humor! How old is your youngest baby? Your body is asking (demanding?!) for carbs (and in your opinion chocolate) but be gentle on yourself! No one wants to derail themselves, but perhaps your body is wanting caffeine... (Naturally found in chocolate and that's the most "enjoyable" way to consume caffeine to you) and carbs are found in such a variety of foods that maybe resorting to "pasta" isn't really what your body is asking for.
I remember years ago that someone "tricked" their body into thinking it was "full" by making sure it either was full of water or greens (ie:spinach or lettuce). I've used this from time to time when my brain wants to reach for the chip bag - I make sure my body reaches for the water bottle and a carrot (or 6) if I'm on weight loss time. If I'm on a "maintaining" diet, I have the chips. Just work it in to my exercise over the next couple of days to burn off anything extra.
Welcome back to the monthly bills... But just remember that if the scale seems higher during this time, it SHOULD be. Your body is naturally retaining water and that water too will be shed once your week/few days is done (hence why you feel bloated before and, usually, during your period.) those follicles in your uterus that took a nice little holiday while you were taking care of your most recent offspring, are taking up to 1/4 cup of water EACH every cycle. Age dependent, You could be retaining anywhere from a pound to 2 pounds of water. Again, be gentle on yourself. It is those unrealistic expectations that we put on ourselves that cause the train wreck.
I have a 6 month and a 2 year old. I'm hoping to lose "40 over 40 weeks" (or earlier!). I know (and accept) that my body won't "lose" every week. That's part of it I guess. I'm hoping that by taking part in these discussions and forums that I'll be extra motivated though.

Carbs are a monster. The more you have, the more you want. They make your blood sugar spike, and then drop quickly, so you crave more carbs. Maybe have some protein when you are craving carbs. It will give you more sustained energy and prevent the blood sugar roller coaster. I know how you feel though. I have the cravings bad. I'm struggling to eliminate them. Using protein to satisfy a carb craving seems like it's not working at first, but over time you crave less carbs!0
