Fruit

I have been LC since November and have lost 20 lbs so far and have another 10 -15 to go to be right where I want to be. I love lc BUT I am worried that I am not getting enough vitamins since I rarely eat fruit, I do eat veggies, but no fruit. Does anyone else have this worry or would a multivitamin do it? On the same note, I was thinking of going to see my dr. to get some blood work done just to make sure my cholesterol counts are in check...do you guys do this. Also if anyone would like to add me as a friend, I find it really helpful seeing others diet logs (it gives me great ideas.).

Well done on your weight loss so far...that's a tremendous and encouraging loss. I was on Keto (and previously Dukan) last year but missed my fruits especially berries that are so good for you. Now I am low carb moderate fat and high protein as my own adaptation to see if this will work. I bought a Nutribullet and found that the best tasting smoothies had some sort of fruit within the recipe. So I now introduce fruit back in but I opt for those with a lower sugar and Glycemic Index count. Examples are blueberries, raspberries, apples (green) , grapefruit and rhubarb. I sometimes have strawberries and other medium sugar fruits but ALWAYS in a very high protein recipe or other low GI /carb ingredient like avocado, nuts , seeds etc so as not to spike my blood sugar.0

Thanks for the feed back. I try and stay Under 50 g of carbs but lately I am feeling really tired but maybe it is because last week I was on vacation and cheated a little...I am not sure. I should take a vitamin!0

Yes do that and carry on as before cheat period, all will be fine. 50grams is also my magic number0 -
curious as to how you determine 50g? Not 25g? or 30g? how do you know what's best for you? I test keto using strips.0

I have no idea! lol! I just read that under 50 would sail me in to Keto. Where would I get those strips? And how long can I stay in Keto? Would you know?0

Hotsungirl - I read up a lot on Keto before trying the diet and seemed that even though there isn't really a 'one size fits all' to trigger ketosis, I found most people to be below 20-25 grams as a daily guideline. After weeks of trying, I found myself bored of pondering ketosis and over thinking the detail. I now have up to 50 grams daily which is still only 5% of my total macros......and I am losing so it has been trial and error. I am not currently following Keto but a loose LCHF.
FR - The whole point of keto is to stay in ketosis for the whole time the degree of which will vary depending on different factors . Join the keto group on here, I am friends with so many of the seasoned and very motivating followers of the diet. Its a way of eating for life and brings many other health benefits along with it.
Keto strips - Walmart or and pharmacy (USA), Boots chemist or selected pharmacies (UK)0 -

I'll address this, primarily because I am an extreme case. First, which vitamins do you feel like you are missing? Fruit are an exceptionally poor source of vitamins for the amount of sugar they come with. You will get all the vitamins and minerals you need from the vegetables. If you're eating veggies, you'll gain no benefits from adding fruit. You do not need fruit to meet your nutritional needs.
Now, that said, the next question becomes, "how much vegetables are required to meet your nutritional needs?" I mean, let's find the bottom. That way we know what we have to stay above. Frankly, there's no bottom. I meet all my nutritional needs, and I eat absolutely nothing from plants. I eat no fruit. I eat no vegetables. I also take no supplements. I'm not saying you should do this. But, you don't need to worry unless you have some evidence of a lack.
Go, get your blood tests. Ask the doctor to check, tell him/her that you're worried. They should be able to check if you're deficient in any major vitamins/minerals. I've had mine, nothing came back abnormal. My doctor wasn't thrilled with my total cholesterol (high); but, I was thrilled with my triglycerides and HDL (the numbers which really matter). The best thing to do is get blood tests and keep track. Don't worry too much about keeping cholesterol counts "in check" based on the old advice. Just focus on the important numbers and that they go (stay) in the right direction.
Short answer: Eat veggies, ignore fruit. You don't need to worry about deficiencies unless you have evidence of one.0 -

20-25g is the initial recommendation due to the fact that limiting your net carbs to that amount should get everyone into ketosis. Once keto adapted (or at goal weight, or whatever, personal preference as long as its been a couple months of strict keto and you're comfortable with things), some people doing keto do increase carbs slowly to figure out their own personal threshold for remaining in ketosis. Its different for everyone.0 -

I can see only one advantage to staying below 20g carbs ...
At the moment I show pink on keto sticks having eaten less than 20g now into five days of a renewed diet, but by next week despite maintaining sub 20g I will not show on keto sticks due to using macros of 210g protein and only 70 fat.
The advantage is sub 20g takes away ALL cravings for carbs and ALL hunger and makes the diet a non event that makes a mockery of everything ever written of the difficulty in dieting and sticking to one...
I loath the necessary carb up meal once a week as I get insatiable hunger after and have to have it late evening otherwise I would binge such is the craving for more...0 -
