Happy Sunday Folks! Hope all is well with all of you.
After the Jen's Jaunt Chat yesterday motored on over to Hibets Sports and got my 300lb Olympic set so Home Gym is Good to go for now. Got some rearranging to do but first 5X5 session out there will be today. Long term I will be able to reach my Fitness goals with the addition of two more 45's per side. Not necessary yet but will need the first pair soon to keep up with my deadlift progress.
On the TF front now into day 23, HRV was 87.0 with a green light this morning, FBG was 143 so stuff going on there I'm still not sure about. Seems so strange that a mildly elevated glucose level, hba1c of 6.0 = Avg BG of 120, would go into this screaming flare up and no one has any research that says what happens during the smoking cessation process.
From a Review Article "Limited data are available on the short- and long-term effects of smoking cessation on hypothalamic- and thyroid-pituitary-adrenal axes, sex hormones, energy homeostasis, and lipid and glucose metabolism. Initial data indicate that smoking cessation is associated with decreased cortisol levels and in the short-term, smoking cessation does not correct the diminished adrenocortical responses to stress caused by chronic smoking. Cessation reverses smoking's effects on thyroid disorders and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Finally, smoking cessation increases transiently food intake and sustained weight gain and is associated with increases in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels that occur rapidly on cessation." The Conclusion was that more research is needed. No kiddin.
Kevin Bummer on missing the chat but a good time shootin is a pretty good sub.
Always enjoy hangin out with ya folks. Have a great day and Jamm on!

Ooops, created a thread of my own. DOH!!
Good morning fellow MFP peeps!
Ok, a very crazy weigh in this morning. Super happy about it but jeez! I need to figure out a way to put the slowdown on these losses. I keep wondering if I'm doing myself harm by not eating enough. As I have said before though, I just don't feel that hungry and I don't want to force myself to eat something and then feel miserable.
I had a great time guest hosting for Carol last night. Kim, Chris & John, thank you for fantastic time. It was great to finally get to talk to all of you. Carol popped in towards the end which was awesome. And Kris was watching and commenting a lot (she is such a troublemaker - )
Need to go record my weekly vlog. Not sure what I'm going to talk about this week. I probably should start planning these. Hehehe... Have a great Sunday everybody.0 -
Oh wanted to mention, my first 'new thing' for February was jicama. I've had it before but quite a long time ago. It's a great snacking veggie.

My Home Gym
Just did 5X5 A Set Zercher Squat 140, Bench Press 95, Barbell Row 115, Cooled down with 12 mins on the Schwinn, pre warm up 2 sets of 1 min or the inversion board. Back feels very good could be that its new and different but I def like what I'm feeling on it.
Kim - The squat rack is great It has a 600 lb limit but for me that is about 150 more than I am ever gonna need. Got it through the Army PX but no real difference on the price from Amazon. it's a Powerline and sold by Body Sold in Palatine Il. Assembly was not difficult and I will have to go over all the nuts and bolts again and tighten it up some more. All in all very happy with it.

John,
Does it feel like there's enough space between the rear upright and the front one to unrack your bar and do a back squat? My biggest reason for getting a power rack/cage is the safety bar in case I have to bail on a squat or bench press set. Some of them I've looked at have dimensions of just over 2ft (usually 26-28") between the uprights. Thats seems too close, but then again I only take a step or two back with the bar.0 -
Kim
Yep plenty of room for me 24" depth, that's pretty standard for old school racks, Bigger ones get more expensive in a very big hurry because the steel has to get thicker to bear loads over a longer span, so cage rating goes down or price goes up. I do Zercher or some might call them cradle squats. and I have plenty of room. The Bar Support Racks are a good size Big enough but not too big. The safety bars are very heavy and lots of vertical adjustments. (Cheaper racks won't have as many holes because it would weaken thinner steel. back to safety rating) Yep the reason I got this one is except for dead lift I don't lift barbells without the safety, period.
Hope that helps.0 -
Good morning everybody. Rough night last night - got maybe 4 hours of sleep. Grrrrrrr. I'll just have to see how the day progresses.0

Good morning! I made a yummy chili for dinner last night, and now I am second guessing myself (I would say "waffling" but there are no waffles...). Grass-fed beef, organic tomatoes, onions, celery, and pinto beans. All good stuff. But, it is officially high carb. Wish we knew all the answers. I did sleep better last night, so maybe slow carbs are good for me.
Jen, I love jicama. I never prep it for myself, for no good reason. But the bodega near my daughter has it prepped and ready for a low price (cheaper than I could do it), so it is a treat when I visit NYC. It does have a bit of a natural laxative effect, so don't overdo it!0 -
Happy Monday Folks! Got my MRI done and heading out to do some errands, HRV was 100.2 this morning with a green flag so gonna get a good walk in later. Blood Glucose levels still way out of whack so who knows? I'm figuring after 30 days TF my weight and glucose levels will be my new starting point whatever they are. As of now my weight gain seems to have topped out at 20lbs, so see how it is this coming Sunday and move out from there. Got some N=1 Glucose stuff to try as well. So let the experiments begin. If any one has any ideas on FBG interventions I'd be interested to know. I'm planning on 3g of Ginger/ day. I've also been considering 7g BCAA with 3g Taurine, on Lifting Days. Also bringing back Greek Yogurt. (less about FBG more about what I like). I'm open to interesting ideas.
Cynthia the Chili sounds great.
Jen bummer on the sleep, I had a good nite last night, first one in a while so over 7hrs sleep. Feel like I'm turning a corner on the TF sleep problems. Will see.
Work Hard Have Fun, But above all B0 -
Cynthia, I didn't know that about jicama. Well, I could use a little of that 'benefit' right now (TMI!!!). I don't know why I didn't keep eating it when I first tried it. It's just so yummy.
Thanks John. I'm actually not doing too bad today. Perhaps the walking is helping. Glad to hear you had a good night's sleep. Really rooting for you on the TF front. You CAN do this!! Remember, you're Hammer Jammer! U B Jammin'!

John that's a pretty cool setup. I want to get a power rack, but I haven't found one on Craigslist that's reasonable. I've thought about just getting a Rogue but don't NEED one right now. I have 160lb in bumper plates that I use when squatting so I can just bail if I need to. Practice bailing with lighter weight if you go this route. It's intuitive but just like in poker, know your outs.
I'm going to get some more stall mats for mine. I'll try to get pictures of it sometime this week!
I'm making my February goal sleep. I want to get on a better schedule and sleep 8 full hours every night.0 -
John, heck I'm excited about your home gym lol. And very interesting article! I remember them TF nights. And what's worse (at least for me) is that right when I woke up I want to smoke but I can't, I'm fighting the cravings and I was just not a happy camper. I love Arturo, I know I would be trying to start *kitten*( in the first stages of my TF) because I'm cranky and sometimes hormonal but he remained calm and would not get suck into my craziness. When I see how calm he is I will usually come to my senses and realize that I'm being a class A *kitten*!
Jen, i think it depends on how much you have to lose if it's more than 50 then I don't think 2lb a week is a lot. If you are trying to lose 20lb then I think 2 lb a week might be too fast. As for the food... Again this is my opinion, I think your calories are on the low end. your weight loss will slow down as you lose more weight and hit that dreaded plateau. (That happens to EVERYBODY. )So if you are already eating this low at a higher weight, how low are you going to go at a lower weight? Unless you are doing heavy lifting to build muscles, I think you might run into trouble down the road. But if you are not hungry, you are not hungry. You shouldn't force yourself to eat either. Instead eat nutrient dense food or make a green smoothie. Below is a link of dr Rhonda Patrick's micronutrient smoothie. She is amazing! and on the forefront of nutrition, endocrinology and neurology. I've also included the link for the MFP's eat more to weigh less.A lot of useful resources. Maybe that'll give you some idea.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys86ZgjQQYg She explains the reasons behind each ingredient. SUPER informative.

As for sleeping try lemon balm tea, "nature calm" (it'll also help keep things regular) Also taking magnesium citrate after each meal will help "move things along."
I also want to say that everybody is different just giving my opinion. I'm always learning new things and adapting little tweaks from learning things from everybody.
Jicama! I love Jicama! Try this: Slice the Jicama into strips, choose a mango that is not yet ripe so it'll still have a slight hint of sweetness, or use a green apple. Slice it into strips as well. Toss it with lemon or lime juice and add a dash of cayenne pepper. So so good! I learned that from Arturo's mom Now go try some Chayote!
Cynthia, Daikon radish has that laxative effect too! Oh how was your whiskey talk?
Chris, look forward to seeing those pictures.

Did short interval today. :90 on :60 off. Goal was to keep it at least 400m every time...didn't meet that goal. I fell off around the 4th round. It was a brutal workout. Short intervals are so brutal. I feel great though. Hopefully it'll help me sleep tonight since I've got to be up early. Was going to hit 5x5 after but I have a small pain in my left leg. I didn't want to burn out my CNS so I might hit it tomorrow. Found a race on May 10th in Amarillo, TX (90 miles away) which has a half marathon. I think I'm going to run it to set a baseline for the one in October!0

Had a great day today, the next two weeks are going to be tough I am on the run 12-13 hours every day starting tomorrow.
Jennifer I am happy you had a good weigh in this morning!
HmrJmr1 That is a cool set up for your workouts.
This may be a newbie thing but I am confused by all the abbreviations.
I hope everyone had a great day!0 -
Heron, thank you for the suggestions, especially the jicama idea. Sounds yumtastic. Diakon! Another yummy veggie. As for my calorie count, if you're looking at my food diary, don't really pay much attention to the calories. I'm really just estimating what I'm eating (my portions are probably usually larger). I'm starting the smoothie thing. I just have to try to make it something regular. As I have said, this eating actual food is so much different than what I've done in the past (depending on processed foods and artificial sweeteners). I'm still learning so much and value all of the information.
My weight loss goal initally was to lose about 50lbs. i still have over 25 to go (160 is my goal) and then I will evaluate. I know the losses will slow down over time. I'm expecting it this week, as a 'recovery' from the big loss last week.
Tom, I'm with you on the acronyms. I work in IT so am flooded with acronyms on a daily basis, so I can't remember what any mean.

Happy Tuesday Folks! Hope all is well with all of you.
My HRV (Heart Rate Variability) is in the 60's with a yellow flag so putting off my Strong lifts B set until tomorrow. My Fasted Blood Glucose (FBG) is still way out of whack, and Tobacco Free (TF) now for 25 days. Still feeling the urge at times though I'm sleeping better.
Heron Love Rhonda Patrick was disappointed to learn she's married (a widower living in hope) . Still would like to meet her at Paleo FX.
Jen I was reading some research that says losing it faster can be a big help in keeping it off as well. Let things roll the way you're doing it and eat whole foods when you're hungry stop when you're not. As long as it works don't mess with it.
Chris - good plans
Tom Bummer on the long days get the best rest ya can.
Have a great day Folks. The opportunities to excel are all around us Get Some!

Good morning everyone! To answer the question from above, my whiskey talk went very well. Five fantastic courses accompanied by five amazing whiskeys (or whiskys) (or even whiskies, but that is bad form). We had about 55 people in attendance, and were sold out. My co-presenter was Lew Bryson, and he has great books on the topic if anyone is interested. Also breweries...
I got my hemp oil yesterday, and tried it last night. I took a very small dose since I was a bit nervous. For the first time in months, maybe years, I had dreams. That means I at least hit REM, which is very unusual for me. I still woke up at 2 and 4:30, but fell back to sleep pretty promptly. Tonight I'll try the suggested dosage. Keep you posted.
The nutritionists at the Dishing up Nutrition podcast (their office is Nutritional Weight and Wellness in MN or WI) suggest magnesium glycinate for sleep (and anxiety, for that matter). They are pretty sane - lower carb, animal protein, good fats - and support most of their claims with research. I might give that a try, too. Just wanted to try the oil first by itself.0 -
Got a new rowing machine!
But can't seem to post pics from my phone....

Jen, sounds like you body are giving you good cues as to how much to eat. Great thing about eating whole foods is that you need less because they are full of nutrients!
However, I have a hard time with listening to body cues and its from years of bad eating habits. For example sometimes I have a hard time discerning hunger to stomach pains. I sometimes don't have that "full feeling" in fact sometimes after I eat a good meal, I'm hungry an hour later and I didn't even have that "I just ate" feeling. That's why I need to track my food, everything is weighed and measured. Its a pain I wish someday I won't have to weigh food anymore.
I think you are making great progress!! Keep eating whole foods, walk as much as you can and you'll totally get there! I mean look at you, you are halfway to your goal!! whoo!
Cynthia, how did you take the hemp oil? you just chug it? That is so neat that you found something that works for you. Where did you buy yours? I might have Arturo get some since he has trouble falling asleep.
The whiskey talk sounds like so much fun. What is a good whiskey that you recommend? Something that is not common. price range $100 give or take? Arturo's dad likes drinking whiskey. I'm more of a scotch girl. Maybe I just haven't had the right whiskey lol Do you dink scotch?
John, I think its just neat how you track things. Glad you are sleeping better. Maybe you should try the hemp oil as well LOL.
Yep I like Dr Patrick, I like how she conveys information, very digestible.
Kevin, what brand model did you get? Be be to give us a review of it.
Yesterday was a bad day for Kira my senior dog, its also the first time that she is showing obvious signs of aging.
They haven't been properly walked due to the non stop 3 day rain so I decided to take the longer route that we've done countless times. In fact we did that last week a couple of times. By mile 4, I notice she was lagging and hobbling a little, she kept tilting her head and I can tell that she is straining but she still kept on walking. I still have a little over 0.5mile to reach home and I called Arturo to come pick us up and He could tell that Kira was walking funny as well. I gave her "doggy tylenol" and a good massage and she perked up. She's turning 15 this year so everyday is a bonus! She is the shiny example that exercise, good diet and supplements can improve the quality of life. The fact that she is still going hiking with us is amazing. Arturo chuckles sometimes when he sees me prepping their food, powders and capsules galore!!
Here's a before and after from when we first got her.

Jenn, try putting chili/lime/salt on it. Not sure if it is available in IL, but we get it in the produce section of our market. It is a Mexican/Latin thing, so maybe the ethnic section at the market? My wife learned this from the ladies she works with. Also good on cucumbers and on various melons. We are big fans of jicama at our house. Agreed that it makes a great snack. Also, good job on the podcasts!0 -

Here's a before and after from when we first got her.
Heron, I have weighed my food in the past and depended on packaged foods as well. The weighing got really old and I just quit doing it. I try my best to eyeball things but of course, my eyes are sometimes bigger than my stomach. I hope that you can get to the point where you don't need to weight and measure you food out. It really is amazing at what I used to eat. I never believed the 'conspiracy' that artificial sweeteners made you feel hungry all the time. I have to admit, I believe that now! I'm just going to stay away from all of that garbage! I'm even doing my best to stay away from any sweeteners at the moment. I just want to give my system a bit of a reboot. Thank you for the kind words and support.
Kira is a beautiful dog (well both of your dogs are beautiful). Sounds like you take really good care of her and know how she's feeling. Love the 'doggy tylenon and a massage'. She's got the life.

Cynthia, glad to hear the whiskey/whisky/whiskie talk went well. I've never been able to appreciate whiskey. A couple friend and I toured the Maker's Mark distillery last year which was fun. The tasting at the end wasn't my thing though. I just don't 'understand' whiskey I guess (maybe too much heavy drinking in my youth).
Great news on the hemp oil. Keep us posted. Funny that you mentioned having dreams for the first time in a long time. I honestly can't remember the last time I had (or at least remembered) a dream. Hmmmm
John, I missed your statement about losing weight fast can help in keeping it off. That's interesting. I always heard the opposite, that losing it too fast could cause a slowdown and even weight gain. Since I'm following NO plan (hehehe), I'm just learning as I go (and worrying, as I tend to do). Thanks and I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.
Jonny, thank you for the recommendation. I'll check around (we have Mexican food sections in most of our grocery stores and also have a seperate Mexican store that I have yet to check out. Guessing if I can't find it locally I can find it online. Thank you for the kind words on the podcasts.
I posted this on the Facebook WLC challenge page. Thought I would share it here as well.

Morning all. Been back to eating breakfast. I love eggs with mushrooms onions and peppers.0
-
Full dose of the CBT oil last night. I still woke at 4:30, but fell back asleep right away and didn't reawaken until 6. I feel really rested!
Having sardines for lunch today. I have to admit the little bones still creep me out a bit. It's the chunky ones in the spinal cord...but they're loaded with calcium!
I have a friend coming Friday for a several-day visit. She is a really picky eater, and her diet is the opposite of mine (zero fresh veggies, no seafood or fish), so this should be interesting. Fortunately, she always has dinner leftovers for breakfast so that takes care of one problem!
Jen, the boots are awesome!!!!! That is why I mostly wear cowboy boots - the looser calves. Too much muscle.0 -

Finest Kind of Rowing Machine Kevin!0

Jen: If you can't find the chili/lime spice, let me know and we will send you some.
All: they said walnuts were good for me. Apparently, 4-5 handfuls are not. 1,000 calories +. Sigh... My wife says I have no restraint and they are no,longer allowed in the house. I can turn down pizza and ice cream, but I am a real nut job!0 -
Happy 'MY FRIDAY' (which is actually Thursday to most people - hehehe). Busy day planned. Talking to a vendor later about the status of their software that we're using (it's not working). That should be fun. Then some very VERY time consuming and super boring reconcilation reports. UGH! This is my life!
I had a better night of sleeping, which is good. Woke up once but went back to sleep and didn't wake up until the alarm went off, which has been rare (usually I'm up before the alarm, sometimes by HOURS).
Have a great day everybody.0 -
Jen That is great about fitting into your riding boots I hope you have a great day today!
My family got great news, we have been approved in Indiana to adopt through the Special Needs Adoption Program (SNAP). One more reason to get and stay healthy!
Have a great Thursday everyone!0
