Exercise causes water retention?

I recently started exercising, mainly fitness blender videos that focus on toning. I walk for my cardio a couple times a week. As soon as I added in the toning videos my weight went up almost 4 pounds! My clothes are still looser than before I lost, but I feel a bit bloated. Does anyone have experience with this? Is there a way to flush out the retained water other than not exercising? How long should I expect this to last?

I'd give it a couple of weeks. Don't let the scale worry you, like you said, clothes are still fitting better. Once your body gets used to the exercise, it will give up that water it's holding onto for restoring those muscles.

I went from 100% inactive to going to the gym 3 days a week and working with a trainer. My weight stalled for ~6 weeks. A part of this certainly was managing newfound additional hunger caused by the hard work, but a part of it was just a stall/water issues. i'd recommend taking measurements if you haven't already, and not worrying about the weight as long as you're confident that you're eating right. For me, I saw inches dropping from my chest/waist/hips/thighs in my first month at the gym that were significant and amazing. It made me not worry about the stall at all.

I am having the same issue. Just trying to keep telling myself that the scale is a lying liarpants and does not determine my success in the big picture (sometimes this works, sometimes I give it the finger). Eventually it will all even out, I hope.

If you have built up some muscle, don't be surprised. Muscle weighs more than fat, nothing to worry about :)

    The scale is not lying.

The scale is reporting your accurate weight.

Your problem is that your body weight is the total of all that is in your body: bones, organs, blood, muscles, fat, other fluids, etc.

Between weighings you may have lost fat mass but gained mass of other elements.

Yes, this happens, esp. with weight bearing (bodyweight or weights) exercises. It is completely normal and expected. Just log it, chart it, and watch for the trendline. If you are shrinking, who cares what the scale says?

I've experienced this as well. My understanding is that the process of building muscle involves microscopic tearing of the muscle fibers, then healing of those fibers. The body retains water to aid in this process. Keep doing what you're doing and stay hydrated and your bod will dump the excess water when it's served it's purpose.

Neither is trying to point out mistakes where there was only humour just for the sake of snark. If I wanted that I could post in the general forums. However, apologies for the sarcasm.

Potasssium rich green vegs. Or supplement with potassium. Don't overdo it.

Exercise stresses the system, water is used in the repair process in muscle, hence the bloat. Just give it a day or two.
