I got my surge 2 days ago. So far I am really enjoying it. I had been using a polar ft7 to determine calories for workouts, but I really wanted the surge since it is integrated with MFP. I notice the polar recorded almost twice as many calories for weightlifting compared to the surge. It does seem like the heart rate readings for weights on the surge are a lot lower than what it feels like my heart rate is at. Exercise bike and treadmill calorie counts seem similar to my Polar, but perhaps slightly lower. It is nice not to have to wear a chest strap. I like the sleep tracker. I like that the step count encourages me walk and jog more instead of doing elliptical and exercise bike for my cardio. The overall calories recorded on the surge for working out are between 50-75% of what Polar recorded , but it is hard to say which is more accurate. I like that I can wear it all day long to keep me motivated to move more, even when I'm not at the gym. While not perfect, it looks like it will be a fun toy to help motivate me in my fitness goals.

I'm disappointed that workouts logged in the Surge don't show up in MFP as discreet activities. E.g.: if I hit start on the watch at the beginning of weight lifting and at the end, I would expect something like "User burned XX calories doing XX minutes of weight lifting." I get that it's doing an estimate of the whole day, but it'd be keep motivation up with friends by sharing those workouts in the newsfeed.

    Anyone figured this out?

After a couple of months of near constant wear, I'm happy to report that the Surge has been great. Heart rate is usually very close to chest strap readings, even though I wear it low like a normal watch (evidently some must wear a bit high on the wrist), it's been quite durable (often forget to take off for showers and plenty of slapping against things and drops), and battery life had been solid (around five days except for when GPS is used). In fact, The HR seems to hold up properly during intense periods at or above peak zones running and other cardio, although gets spotty when there are a ton of hand and wrist movements, like weights. My sense is that the caloric burn guestimate is fairly accurate, certainly less than what cardio machines come up with and about 20% less than Runkeeper. This is my first activity tracker - I used to wonder whether all those metrics would have any practical effect. Guessing it's different for different people, but I've found it often incentivized taking that far-off parking space or extra flight of stairs. Plus, when I'm looking at the daily and weekly summaries, I realize I'm thinking about health and fitness, not about dinner or bad television. I certainly would recommend it.

I had the Force for over a year. Just got the Surge two days ago and was super excited to test it out. It's awesome but I am now having a problem with other app syncs. I use Fitbit, My Fitness Pal and Map My Run. Back in December I had a problem with double counting exercise in My Fitness Pal. I contacted them and it had something to do with the Apple Health App. Needless to say, the problem was resolved and life went on.

So, yesterday, I went for my run, using my Surge's GPS and also Map My Run app (I really wanted to test the accuracy of the Surge) Everything was great in terms of accuracy except when I went to log my food in My Fitness Pal app, I noticed that my exercise entry was posted twice. I went back in my journal and noticed that every exercise had been posted twice. Some entries were different by a minute or two, but calorie burn was the same.

I disconnected each app. Deleted the app, re downloaded and opened the apps up again. In the Fitbit app, the exercises were only there once but after a minute of the app syncing to I have no clue what, all of the exercises posted twice again in each app.

Basically, I have sent emails to both Fitbit support and MFP support to try to help me figure this out. I was wondering if anyone else is having this same issue? Any suggestions as to what I should do. I wish that you could just delete the Apple health app because to me, it's pointless and isn't compatible with many of the other apps that I use. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

A friend was having trouble with FitBit and MFP and I found this on the MFP site. Hope it helps you:
    Connect your accounts: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/apps/show/30

Do not log any step-based activity. Your Fitbit is already tracking that for you.

Log non-step exercise (like biking or swimming) in Fitbit—never MFP.

Log food & drink (including water) in MFP.

    Enable negative calorie adjustments: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/diary_settings

Set your activity level to sedentary: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/change_goals_guided & set your goal to .5 lb. per week for each 25 lbs. you need to lose.

Follow your MFP goal, eating back your Fitbit adjustments.

Your Fitbit burn is your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). If you follow my instructions you'll be eating at TDEE minus an appropriate deficit. I lost the weight & have maintained for 6 months using these settings.
