Waiting for knee surgery!!!!

Hi all! I haven't been following this board as much as when I was on nutrimirror but I'm still here! Logging consistent and actually down 10 lbs! Yay for that!

This post is to see if anyone in the NM family has ever had a knee cartilage transplant from a donor or if they know anyone that has had one. I had a dog related accident in the park about a month ago. My very energetic German Short Hair was on a rope and it got caught on my knee, which caused the current problem. However it isn't all her fault because it sounds like the damage was there, just hadn't been a problem yet.

I am only 34 years old and was told that its this or a knee replacement, but this is my best choice based on my activity level. I am runner and extremely active and hate sitting! It's driving me nuts to to be able to do my normal routine, however I am still lifting weights and doing what I can. If anyone is familiar with this I'd love to know what recovery time was like and what your able to do after rehab. Apparently it is not a super common surgery.

I'll be here, just waiting for a call that there is a donor available could be a week, could be months.....I'm a planner so this is throwing me for a loop!

Hey MelCrow! Sorry to hear you are having knee problems-- didn't know they even did cartilage transplants! Did you google it or check for support groups? That might help with recovery and what you can realistically expect to do after the surgery. Hope you don't have to wait long! Good luck and keep us posted :)

Ouch on the injury. I can't give you any help. I don't anyone who's had anything like that. Hope your wait is not too long. Glad you have you pop in.

Sorry to hear about your knee problems, I don't know anything about that either but medicine is an amazing thing sometimes. I hope it all works out for you quickly.
  • Thanks! It's amazing what they can do these days! It's apparently somewhat uncommon. I've only found one person that I knew in high school that has had this. I'm heading to a race in St Louis tomorrow.....The first of many races this year that I'll be sitting in the sidelines. Having with my friends will be fun tho!

My prayers are with you, hoping and praying that your wait isn't too long and that the procedure goes smoothly.

I don't have any first hand knowledge, however, my neighbor is undergoing "rooster comb" injections into his knee to compensate for lack of cartilage. Apparently, the substance used is literally from a rooster's comb and is an almost replica of human knee cartilage. He has had two of the three injections so far and is having less pain. These injections are suppose to help for 6 to 18 months and then, if he's in pain again, the next step would be knee replacement surgery.

Hi Mel, I've got 3 co-workers that have had some type of knee surgery. 1 had totally knee replacement, 1 received a cadaver knee replacement and the other had something to due with the cartilage but just not sure what it was. The co-worker that had the cartilage problem was done about a month ago and he came back to work full time 10 days after and started walking with us for 15 minutes once a day, 16 days after surgery. He also is a runner but he does not compete and he is really looking forward to when he can get back into it. That's all I know.

I hope all works out for you and that you can get back to your routine soon. (((HUGS)))

Good Morning Mel, how are you doing these days? Any comfort? Any more news on surgery?

Just as a matter of info...my neighbor who was getting the "rooster comb" injections did not get the relief he was hoping for. He is now contemplating knee replacement surgery.

    How are you doing, Mel?

I'm coming into this pretty late and don't know if you're still checking this post but I've heard great things about stem cell injections working miracles on the knee and that the recovery time is very quick. They tell you it could take weeks but many people notice vast improvements within days. My brother's neighbor had this done and was thrilled with the results. There is a Dr Oz clip where he interviews a news reporter that had great difficulty even maneuvering stairs and in a few days was able to take stairs. I think this would be worth looking into but it isn't cheap and most insurance doesn't cover it.
