For CONSTIPATION there are several types of 'bowel action' products.
Please read: http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/laxatives-for-constipation-using-them-safely
If not for the high carbs/sugar prunes are great.
My Dr. has me buy OTC Senna brand- sennosides are a vegetable based very mild natural laxative… up to 4 tabs a day, I didn't read the box (duh) and took only 1 at night, nothing much happened.. adults take up to 4, took 2 in am and 2 pm -comfortable results.
...since it is not FDA yada yada it is usually safe to use, but for some- ask your doc first. very cheap $2-$4 box of 100.
- Another OTC is MiraLax brand other OTC names SmoothLax.. NOT for kidney disease issues..unless under dr. approval. Pricey, a cap full-17 gr- in any liquid mixes in, and acts overnight. BUT it is made from polyethylene glycol..yes kind of a motor oil.. and used in PAINTBALLS --really may not be safe for anyone longterm...because as an oil is helps bowels hold more water, makes it easier to 'go'., but in the kidney with its millions of tiny filters it coats and blocks them. My dietitian says no one should use it ( AND it is in all those MIO water flavorings ..if you use it a lot to drink more fluids, you may notice easy bowel movements..this is why.
I love oil in my car engine, not so much in my sole, wonky kidney, too risky.

Before following some of this advice I would urge you to read Gutsense which deals with a number of these issues.0

If you're experiencing constipation while low carbing, odds are you're not getting enough fat. Low carb and keto are not high protein, they should be high fat, and this is one of the reasons why.
Fat takes over the previous job of fiber in...lubricating...the GI tract, though the method of action is different. The "modulating" effect of fiber that conventional wisdom loves so much comes from irritating the gut lining, making it secrete mucus. That mucus covers fecal matter, lubricating it. Fat works differently, because it lubricates things on its own, without the GI irritation. The body can't do that if you're depriving it of enough fat with which to do it (it's kind of low on the priority list, after things like hydrating joints and skin, making and shuttling vitamins, etc).
Your protein intake doesn't need to be more than about 20% of your total calories. More than that and you start risking problems.0 -

I'll try not to go too TMI here. I was very sick last week, to the point I was barely getting 4 or 500 cal/day (ate more, it just didn't all stay there). Between the lack of fats and the side effects from the pain meds, it all ended with one horrifically miserable day. Psyllium husk powder and coconut oil fixed it. It wasn't an instant 30 minute cure, but I don't know that even the otc meds can promise that.
You don't always have to look for a medicine cure, when what you really need might already be in the kitchen.0 -

Great info! I want to try the senna stuff. Pre-Keto I never had problems with constipation. Now I have it all the time.
One minor correction, polyethylene glycol is like car anti-freeze, not oil. It's highly toxic to animals/pets, especially dogs.

Metimucil in the morning and at night keeps me going0

Also, a dose of good old milk of magnesia at bedtime helps, plus it ups your magnesium intake.0

Again with the TMI, but my husband cooked chicken coated in linseeds (instead of breaded chicken) on Wednesday night and since then I have had 4 bowel movements since and would normally only count on one a day. I do think the linseeds are responsible and they are only 5 carbs per 100g according to the box.

This has been my experience since increasing my fat intake substantially with HFLC. I have noticed a big improvement in what was a frequent problem.0
