Muscle Memory?

I used to be a regular weight lifter until about six years ago. Sadly, I've packed on a lot of weight since then. But, last month, my new husband & I joined the gym. I hit the weights again. I started off with 3 sets of 12 reps, lifting the heaviest weights I could manage with good form.
Three weeks later, I noticed that the weight that felt heavy three weeks ago seemed fairly easy. So, today, while working my legs, I upped the weight on each exercise by 20 lbs (still in good form). I don't remember taking such large leaps so easily "back in the day." Is this the "muscle memory" I've read about?

Most likely. Or they could be what we call "newbie gains" where you're body is only just realizing it's capacity, getting warmed up, and every time you go you realize your new strength. Eventually you'll hit a point where you're at your actual capacity, and you'll have to work harder to move up every time, and work at it a little longer.0
