Post VSG looking for support and motivation

Hi, my name is Frances. I've been overweight pretty much all my life. I tried a lot of dieting over the years, sometimes with my mom, sometimes on my own, or alongside friends, but I could never hit the weight loss goals I wanted, and would eventually become demotivated and gain any loss back, and then some. In July 2014, I had VSG after playing with the idea for years, and having a few friends undergo WLS and see positive results. I finally made the decision because I hit 430 lbs at 28 yrs old. I managed to lose 19 lbs prior to surgery, making me 411 lbs, but since surgery, now 7 months out, I still have only managed a grand total of weight loss of about 65 lbs, including my pre-op loss. I lost my dad 3 months after surgery, and he was my biggest supporter in my weight loss, and then in December, I got engaged. I lost my motivation last year after my dad died, and have been trying to get it back. I am going to start tracking my eating on MFP again, but I don't generally eat much anyway. I know my biggest hurdle to overcome is to get active. I feel like my body has accommodated my decreased calorie intake by just slowing my calorie burn, and I need to get in gear to up my expenditure ( my doctor and nutritionist concur). I'm hoping joining this group will help motivate me to work out more, and get back in the mindset that led me to getting surgery in the first place. I currently just want to get under 300 lbs, which I haven't seen since probably high school. If I can get there, then I know I can keep going.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your dad. I lost my mom last month and it has put me in a tailspin in many ways. Is your fiance supportive of your goals?
These are a few things that I've found helpful:
Attend a WLS support group. Does your surgeon have one? If not, check some local hospitals. Although I have to really force myself to go to the meetings, I find them extremely helpful for staying on track.
When I'm struggling, I weigh in every day. I need to see if weight is creeping back on.
Log all your food and check in at MFP everyday.
Increase activity in little ways. I work in a huge complex and use the bathroom that is 5 floors and 400 yards away from my office. Just that one thing adds 5000 steps to my day.
Good luck. Feel free to friend me if you'd like.0 -
Are you logging all your food, including BLT's (bites, licks, tastes)? I weigh every morning, log all my food, weigh and/or measure all my food when at home and when I was losing, I treated this as the most serious diet of my life. Nothing sweet passed my lips, no bread, rice or pasta. Other than head hunger, I was never hungry so, resisting was not difficult at all, it still isn't, almost five years later. There is no end date, develop good habits now, the further out you get, the more you can eat. Protein first, always. Keep this in mind, 100 calories a day, more than you need to maintain (NOT LOSE), is 36,500 calories a year, that is 10 pounds. Visualize this, ONE tablespoon of peanut butter is 100 calories. It is easy to get that 100 calories that we don't need. This is why I'm obsessive about logging my food. I cannot become complacent. Good luck, you have the tool, take advantage of the honeymoon period, it's a one time shot.0

Patty Cakes is right, increase you activity in little ways at first. Strauspher is also right, log everything. I bet you are right and you are not losing much because your body has adjusted to the lower calories. Also, if most of your calories are something other than protein, you won't lose well. So make sure you get in all your protein and water each day. Be more active even if it's just taking a walk. Weigh, measure and log everything.
I am 3.5 years out and much older than you. I started this at 386. Date of surgery I was 366. I have lost 164 so far. I am not to goal yet. I lose slowly and stall often, but I can still lose. So can you. This is a great tool, we just need to use it and use it correctly. Send a friend request if you want. We can do this together.0 -
Great topic! I'm sorry to hear about your loss. My 5 year old's father just passed away 2/18 and it is hard to deal with.
I was sleeved 5/2/14. 1st visit with the nutritionist for my 6 month weigh ins for insurance I was 317lbs, Day of surgery 283lbs, today 238.... Wth??? I have had problems being nauseous ALL the time - insurance will only pay for nausea medicine for 4 days every 28 days, plain water makes me vomit, more than 2 oz of meat every 5 hours makes me vomit, cannot eat or drink more than 4 oz every 3-4 hours, more than 45 oz of fluid a day makes me vomit. Surgeon hospitalized me to watch me and she still does every 2 months and they have tested EVERYTHING and have found I am telling the truth but NOTHING is wrong with my sleeve. She says my only option is exploratory surgery or revision to a bypass. I'm stuck, upset, and even mad at this point that I even had surgery! I won't consider exploratory surgery or a revision. I don't know what to do anymore...0 -

You are the first person I know that has had a negative impact from the sleeve procedure. I would be distraught too. You have my prayers and support

It's been awhile since you posted this, I hope you are doing better, that the natural healing process has settled the problems down. It can be tough at first and some people have it worse than others. Please post again and let us know how you are doing. Praying for you.0
