After attempting weight watchers and failing because I have apparently developed a HUGE sweet tooth thanks to chemo, I made the decision to cut out carbs. I did Atkins years and years ago and achieved great success but of course going back to your old habits + cancer = tremendous weight gain. So I am trying to cut out the breads, pastas, etc. I would love any pointers that any of you can give me! Thanks !!!!

If you have a big sweet tooth, I'd try to avoid all artificial sweeteners as you cut back on carbs. I find the little bit of sweetness kept me from truly embracing this WoE.

My aunt when through chemo and radiation and found the same thing-her sweet tooth got serious!

She now carries snacks everywhere, most of which are high protein/fat and a couple sweet ones just to help with cravings (Nuts, beef jerky, and a small handful of dried fruit) She also keeps hard boiled eggs in her fridge for a fast snack and sometimes has an apple with almond butter if she's hungry for something sweet but not void of nutrition.

    Hope this helps!
  • I am not an artificial sweetener person so I avoid them anyway. I just want to make sure that I can survive this LOL. I know I can and have before but keeping control of myself since chemo has been a huge struggle! Thank you all!

There are different types of low carb (to some 100g carbs/day is low, to some 50, etc), but since you mentioned Atkins which starts out very low, I'll point you to the reddit keto faq, which is I think the best beginners resource out there:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq

To second octobubbles recommendations about sweeteners, there are tons of posts/options out there for "imitation" food that is sort of like a cookie but low carb using almond flour and some tricks, those things are fine, but at the start I'd recommend embracing actual, real low carb foods as much as possible, and once you're comfortable with what you're doing, feel free to experiment :)

Welcome bamajessiej I know that for me, I went cold turkey on anything sweet when I went LCHF and haven't looked back. Prior to that I had the most ridiculous sweet tooth and always poured way more sugar (in whatever form) onto my meals and desserts than there was actual food. My cravings since LCHF have been very few, and very weak. I sincerely hope that you find the same.
  • Day 1 wasn't entirely too bad. I had a couple of times that I thought I was going to starve but I managed to get through them. I have just sat down at my desk to eat breakfast, 3 slices of bacon and an omelet minus any of the good stuff(veggies). I cooked the bacon at home, but I have this breakfast maker form Tupperware that I used for the first time to make my eggs in. 2 Minutes and it was DONE! If I can keep my egg allergy in check I might do well! :)

Is there any reason you skipped the veggies? Not that I'm not anti-vegetables myself, because everyone here will tell you that I never touch the stuff. But, you don't necessarily need to skip some veggies to remain very low carb.

Sounds like you did great. At the beginning if you are hungry, eat (as long as it is low carb). Don't worry about how much you are eating. The idea is to get the carbs out of your system. And, as FIT_Goat says, if you like veggies, eat them. Nothing wrong with low carb veggies on this WOE if you want them.

The reason I skipped the veggies? Because I overslept and didn't meal prep last night. I am 18 months in remission for ovarian cancer and since then I sleep terribly at night so most every day I oversleep and spend my morning rushing around to get out of the house on time. However, I am having brussel sprouts for lunch...yum! :)
